Monumental memory of school in post-unitarian Italy

    No full text
Why should stone tablets and statues be of interest to education historians? This essay analyses epigraphic and sculptural artefacts as manifestations of public memory of school as well as cultural devices for shaping collective imaginary about education and citizenship, in a chronological arc beginning with the Italian unification. While treating a set of monumental samples, particular attention is focused on the political reasons behind the choices of installing memorials in honour of personages of school – ranging from teachers to education ministers, passing through educationalists. Throughout the shifts in power under way from the second half of 19th century onwards, what emerges is the major heuristic potential lying in those material historical sources: first of all, the monumental phenomenology is revealed to be the expression of a self-celebratory strategy promoted by the ruling classes to legitimate themselves as the guardians of a honourable school past; moreover, the public use of school memory turns out to be designed to strengthen feelings of belonging to a particular community, be it educational, professional teaching, local or national; lastly, monumental traces in the anthropic space are shown to be the signs of a diffused pedagogy trying to instil a virtuous model of educator and more generally of citizen into the folds of collective mentality. By penetrating into the official idea of schooling behind inscribed slabs and three-dimensional portrays, what the author has defined as monumental archaeology of school imaginary offers an untried standpoint on cultural history of education

This paper collects and summarizes the reports proposed at the fifth national PRIN seminar that the University of Roma Tre organized on 5th November 2021 as part of the scientific activities under the research project of relevant national interest «School Memories between Social Perception and Collective Representation (Italy, 1861-2001)». The initiative aimed to illustrate the state of the art of the project in establishing electronic repertories of school memories; the databases officially presented in this occasion relate to: audiovisual products; video oral testimonies, awards of honour, public memories, art works, illustrations, literary works; school diaries and autobiographies. L’evoluzione della rappresentazione di Giovanni Cena nella memoria pubblica (1918-1927)

This article aims to highlight the place that Giovanni Cena occupied in the public imagination after his death on the basis of the monumental tributes paid to his memory from 1918 to 1927. Three commemorative artifacts were dedicated to the so-called apostle of education of the peasants of the Agro Romano and Pontine Marshes: the plaque on the façade of the School of Colle di Fuori (1918); the plaque under the porch of the School of Casal delle Palme (1921); the funeral monument in his native Montanaro (1927). Analyzing the three monumental sources – jointly with the related printed commemorative materials, in particular those containing inaugural speeches – enables to trace the development of the memorial narrative on Cena from his late liberal civil exaltation to his fascist religious sublimation; thus, the monument at Montanaro Cemetery – which was erected as the Lateran Treaty was drawing near – consists of the sculptured face of Christ. The public use of memory is also studied: inaugural ceremonies provide the promoters of Cena’s memorialization an opportunity to deal with extra commemorative issues

School memories from the Eritrean Colony. The Eritreans’ oral testimonies

This article takes as a documentary basis the oral reports from Eritrean witnesses of Italian colonialism that the historian Irma Taddia recorded between 1986 and 1994. The interviews – which were published in 1996 – are particularly relevant for their historical-educational contents. The school memories emerging in the autobiographical accounts are subjected to analysis for the first time in this study: the oral materials collected by Taddia turn out to be of exceptional testimonial value by providing the Eritreans’ retrospective look at their school past during the Italian occupation. The interviewees give their judgement on the colonial educational organization: they express dissatisfaction with the inadequacy of the Italian initiative in relation to school matters and are aware that the lines of colonial educational policy were oriented towards maintaining the status quo. The live voices of Eritrean witnesses are precious as they integrate the Italian written sources used for reconstructing the educational history in the Eritrean Colony
