Detection and attribution of urbanization effect on flood extremes using nonstationary flood-frequency models
This study investigates whether long-term changes in observed series of high flows can be attributed to changes in land use via nonstationary flood-frequency analyses. A point process characterization of threshold exceedances is used, which allows for direct inclusion of covariates in the model; as well as a nonstationary model for block maxima series. In particular, changes in annual, winter, and summer block maxima and peaks over threshold extracted from gauged instantaneous flows records in two hydrologically similar catchments located in proximity to one another in northern England are investigated. The study catchment is characterized by large increases in urbanization levels in recent decades, while the paired control catchment has remained undeveloped during the study period (1970–2010). To avoid the potential confounding effect of natural variability, a covariate which summarizes key climatological properties is included in the flood-frequency model. A significant effect of the increasing urbanization levels on high flows is detected, in particular in the summer season. Point process models appear to be superior to block maxima models in their ability to detect the effect of the increase in urbanization levels on high flows

Complexity Analysis of the Viking Labeled Release Experiments
The only extraterrestrial life detection experiments ever conducted were the three which were components of the 1976 Viking
Mission to Mars. Of these, only the Labeled Release experiment obtained a clearly positive response. In this experiment 14C
radiolabeled nutrient was added to the Mars soil samples. Active soils exhibited rapid, substantial gas release. The gas was
probably CO2 and, possibly, other radiocarbon-containing gases. We have applied complexity analysis to the Viking LR data.
Measures of mathematical complexity permit deep analysis of data structure along continua including signal vs. noise, entropy
vs.negentropy, periodicity vs. aperiodicity, order vs. disorder etc. We have employed seven complexity variables, all derived from
LR data, to show that Viking LR active responses can be distinguished from controls via cluster analysis and other multivariate
techniques. Furthermore, Martian LR active response data cluster with known biological time series while the control data
cluster with purely physical measures. We conclude that the complexity pattern seen in active experiments strongly suggests
biology while the different pattern in the control responses is more likely to be non-biological. Control responses that exhibit
relatively low initial order rapidly devolve into near-random noise, while the active experiments exhibit higher initial order
which decays only slowly. This suggests a robust biological response. These analyses support the interpretation that the Viking
LR experiment did detect extant microbial life on Mars
Consideration of Interference Correlation Properties in a JD-CDMA Mobile Radio System with Coherent Receiver Antenna Diversity
In code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile radio systems, both intersymbol interference and multiple access interference arise which can be combatted by using Joint Detection (JD) techniques, to reduce the degradation in performance resulting from time variance, coherent receiver antenna diversity (CRAD) can be used. The application of JD techniques offers the possibility to exploit the knowledge of noise covariances at the receiver. If only intercell (cochannel) interference is considered, the noise covariances in the uplink receiver of a multiple receiver antenna CDMA mobile radio system depend mainly on the directions of arrival (DOAs) of the interfering signals and the receiver antenna placement. Therefore, if the interferer DOAs are known at the base station, these covariances could be estimated. In this thesis, a realistic model of the uplink of a JD CDMA mobile radio system with CRAD is described in which the above mentioned interference cancelling method is used. Sonia Miller-Van Oort (JD 1997) has spent her legal career in Minneapolis, where she focuses her practice on a variety of litigation cases involving commercial disputes, product liability cases, non-competition matters, breach-of-contract cases, franchise disputes, and more. In addition to her law degree, she holds a B.A. degree from the University of Notre Dame (1993). Miller-Van Oort began her career at Flynn Gaskins & Bennett and later joined Faegre & Benson, now known as Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath.
In 2011 after more than a decade of working at large law firms, she co-founded Sapientia Law Group where she is currently chief manager. One of the few minority owned and women owned law firms in the Midwest, the firm conducts more than half of its client business with an alternative fee structure. Driven by a desire to make a change in the way law firms work, Sapientia Law is still going strong.
Miller-Van Oort is well-known for her skill as an attorney and for her service to the community. She was named a “Rising Star” by Minnesota Law and Politics in 2005, 2006, 2008, and a “Super Lawyer” in 2013, 2014, and 2015. In 2007–2008, she was elected the 89th president of the Hennepin County Bar Association (one of the 15 largest county bar associations in the country), serving as the Association’s first Hispanic president and the second-youngest president in its history. In 2017 she served as the Minnesota State Bar Association’s first Hispanic bar president.
Sonia Miller-Van Oort also has a history of serving the Law School. She was a member of the Alumni Board from 2003–2009 and is a founding member of the Latino Alumni Advisory Board.
