The Myth of the Myth of the Rational Voter
This paper argues that Bryan Caplan’s Myth of the Rational Voter overstates in case against democracy by not dealing with what might be called the historical/instrumentalist argument for democracy. It argues that the case for democracy that he attacks is primarily an academic exercise, which makes his argument against that case also an academic exercise. It further argues that the supposed policy choice that Caplan presents between the market and democracy is not the correct choice, and that his proposals that economists should be given more voting weight in the democratic decision process is inappropriate.
Design of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle recharging system
Thesis (Nav. E.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Ocean Engineering; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 57-58).The Odyssey AUV Series uses a Lithium-ion Polymer battery which is able to supply the necessary power for a limited mission time. The current method of recharge includes surfacing the AUV, opening the vehicle, removing the battery from the vehicle and recharging the battery. A different approach is proposed which uses an inductive coupler and power electronics to conduct a battery charge without opening the vehicle or removing the battery.by Bryan D. Miller.S.M.Nav.E
Definition and testing of an architectural tradespace for on-orbit assemblers and servicers
This paper proposes a set of eight architectures that fully span the design tradespace of on-orbit assembler and servicer satellites. A framework is presented that defines the tradespace for servicing and assembly architectures across the three axes of distributed vs. centralized functionality, proximity operation vs. fully captured operations, and integrated vs. external servicing/assembly satellites. A qualitative analysis of the architectural tradespace details the advantages and disadvantages of each of the core architectures. In addition, the paper discusses current and future hardware-in-the-loop testing of various architectures in a sequence of iterative and incremental tests in ground and microgravity environments as part of the Synchronized Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) facility. New hardware is being sent to the International Space Station to provide quantitative validation of the previously qualitative trades within this space. The paper describes how the results from this testing and the planned test sequences for the remaining architectures will reduce risk for on-orbit assembly and servicing missionsAmerican Society for Engineering Education. Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson: W&L Law Faculty Panel
On March 27, 2019, the W&L Law Library hosted a panel discussion of Just Mercy, the bestselling true story of a lawyer exonerating the wrongly convicted and representing society’s most vulnerable through the perils of our justice system.
The event continued an annual tradition of faculty panel discussions on popular works of fiction and non-fiction with a connection to the law, featuring perspectives from W&L Law professors David Bruck, Nora Demleitner, Brandon Hasbrouck, and Jon Shapiro. Professor J.D. King moderated the discussion, and librarian Andrew Christensen provided introductory remarks.
Author Bryan Stevenson will speak at the W&L Law commencement ceremony on May 10, 2019.
Please note that, at the speaker\u27s request, Prof. Hasbrouck\u27s audio has been suppressed in this video (46:30 through 58:43)

Risk Assessment in Economic Feasibility Analysis: The Case of Ethanol Production in Texas
The objective of this study is to demonstrate the benefits of quantifying the economic viability of a proposed agribusiness under risk relative to a feasibility study which ignores risk. To achieve this objective, the economic viability of a 50 MMGPY ethanol facility in Texas is analyzed over a 10-year period in two ways: with no risk and with historical risk for prices and costs.Risk and Uncertainty,
Poets on place: tales and interviews from the road
Includes index.Out to see America and satisfy his travel bug, W.T. Pfefferle resigned from his position as director of the writing program at Johns Hopkins University and hit the road to interview sixty-two poets about the significance of place in their work. The lively conversations that resulted may surprise with the potential meanings of a seemingly simple concept. This gathering of voices and ideas is illustrated with photo and word portraits from the road and represented with suitable poems. Flight hardware development for a space-based robotic assembly and servicing testbed
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2014.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. "This material is declared a work of the United States Government and is not subject to copyright protection in the United States."Includes bibliographical references (pages 161-165).Robotic assembly and servicing missions in space are becoming increasingly attractive for their potential to expand space capabilities and save money. Future missions may construct large systems on-orbit, service existing space assets, or remove retired satellites from valuable locations in the Geosynchronous orbit, among other things. Due to the high-risk nature of these missions, rigorous test facilities are a necessity. This thesis examines the existing testbeds for robotic assembly and servicing technologies and argues that a new, space-based testbed is necessary. It presents initial ground testing results for applicable control concepts, which also indicate that the dynamic authenticity associated with a six-degree-of-freedom on-orbit testbed is crucial for further development. This thesis then presents the requirements for such a testbed and describes the SPHERES Facility on the International Space Station. The facility, created by members of MIT's Space Systems Laboratory, has many of the desired testbed characteristics and can be easily expanded to meet the requirements through a hardware augmentation known as the Halo. The thesis develops the requirements for the Halo and then steps through the conception, design, and implementation of that hardware, along with the planned operations aboard the International Space Station.by Bryan Patrick McCarthy.S.M
