Notes on McTaggart\u27s Lectures on Lotze
Russell preserved notes he took on McTaggart’s course on Lotze’s major works in 1898. They are published here for the first time. Russell’s abbreviations are expanded and deletions noted. N. Milkov introduces the notes and provides Russell’s biographical and philosophical background. The course on Lotze, on whose philosophy of geometry Russell had already written, was influential in his development away from monism
Siegener Beiträge zur Geschichte und Philosophie der Mathematik 2016
transformations of respirAtory epitelium in fibrous stage of acute respiraTory distress-syndrome
ABSTRACT
The epithelial-mesenchimal transition of respiratory epithelium in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) was goal of investigation. Postmortem immunohistochemical stain of respiratory part histological sections was methods. Result: epithelial immunofenotype of epithelial cells was determinate in more cases. Conclusion. The epitelial-mesenchimal transition does not play main role to lungs fibrosis in ARDS.

On the anniversary of Academician Nikolay Kazimirovich Yankovsky
June 21, 2023, marks the 75th anniversary of RAS Academician Nikolay Kazimirovich Yankovsky, an eminent specialist in the field of general and molecular genetics and biotechnology. Nikolay Kazimirovich has published more than 170 scientific papers, has nine patents, trained six Doctors and 19 Candidates of Science. He is a laureate of the USSR Council of Ministers Prize and several other awards. Nikolay Kazimirovich carries out extensive editorial work, being the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal “Genetics” and a member of editorial boards of a few other specialized periodicals. N.K. Yankovsky is also known as a major organizer in science; in 2006-2016 he held the position of Director of the Institute of General Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and currently he is the Scientific Director of this Institute. Nikolay Kazimirovich carries out extensive educational work, being the author of dozens of popular scientific publications and presentations in the mass media. It is impossible to overestimate the contribution of N.K. Yankovsky into the work of the Russian genetic community in the rank of the first Vice-President of the Vavilov Society of Geneticists and Breeders, in which position he has always been and still is a generator of new ideas and an active fighter for the ideals of genetic science. Friends and associates – Russian geneticists and breeders, congratulate Nikolay Kazimirovich on his anniversary and wish him achieving new creative successes, grateful apprentices, enthusiasm and inexhaustible energy in solving large-scale challenges of genetics on a national and global scales
Carl Hempel: Whose Philosopher?
Recently, Michael Friedman has claimed that virtually all the seeds of Hempel’s philosophical development trace back to his early encounter with the Vienna Circle (Friedman 2003, 94). As opposed, however, to Friedman’s view of the principal early influences on Hempel, we shall see that those formative influences originated rather with the Berlin Group. Hempel, it is true, spent the fall term of 1929 as a student at the University of Vienna, and, thanks to a letter of recommendation from Hans Reichenbach, he even attended some sessions of the Vienna Circle. But he spent much less time in Vienna than in Berlin, where he studied under Reichenbach from 1926 till 1933 and wrote a dissertation on probability, Reichenbach’s specialty. Hempel also attended seminars conducted by Walter Dubislav, another member of the Berlin Group
Susan Stebbing's Criticism of Wittgenstein's Tractatus
Susan Stebbing’s paper “Logical Positivism and Analysis” (March 1933) was unusually critical of Wittgenstein. It put up a sharp opposition between Cambridge analytic philosophy of Moore and Russell and the positivist philosophy of the Vienna Circle to which she included Wittgenstein from 1929–32. Above all, positivists were interested in analyzing language, analytic philosophers in analyzing facts. Moreover, whereas analytic philosophers were engaged in directional analysis which seeks to illuminate the multiplicity of the analyzed facts, positivists aimed at final analysis which “proves” that there are simples. Stebbing’s paper urged Wittgenstein to recast his philosophy and 1933 abandon those components of it that linked him to the Vienna Circle
The Composition of Wittgenstein's "Tractatus": An Interpretative Study
When Wittgenstein started writing the Tractatus in June 1915, he was convinced that he was producing a theory. Accordingly, he chose a theoretical style of expressing his thought. Wittgenstein abandoned this stance only at the end of his work of composing the book. He realized that what he is producing in not a theory but a manual for improving our language and thinking. Unfortunately, it was too late to change the architecture and the style of the book: Wittgenstein simply had no time to do that. This drawback makes the Tractatus notoriously difficult to understand and is apparently the major factor that caused the so called “Tractarian Wars”
