„Lingvistički okvir“ i treba li izaći iz njega: jezički podaci i lingvistička analiza u savremenim jezičkim profesijama

    No full text
This chapter discusses contemporary higher education needs in the domain of language(s) and linguistics. Following some initial remarks on the interdisciplinarity of language studies and the methodological implications it has, the profile of language data and project specialist is described, intended as an overarching educational goal for a broad range of degree courses in languages and linguistics. The profile is built around seven thematic clusters of knowledge, skills and competences, and is divided into four more specific sub-profiles (language data analyst, language data scientist, language data manager, language project manager); its formulation is linked to projects in which the Department of General Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade took part over the last ten years, in particular the recently completed Erasmus+ strategic partnership UPSKILLS – UPgrading the SKIlls of Linguistics and Language Students. Some of the core knowledge and skills are considered in more detail, primarily those related to language data and linguistic analysis; it is emphasized that contemporary language professions require new knowledge, skills and competences (especially in relation to technology and statistics), but also adjustments in the old ones

Toward a new profile for twenty-first century language specialists: Industry, institutional and academic insights. UPSKILLS Intellectual Output 1.2

The extraordinary achievements of artificial intelligence are impacting all sectors of society and raising issues that concern, among others, what emerging skills are needed by the world of work, how amplification of the current gender gap can be limited, and whether disruption can be an engine for positive change. These issues affect the language and linguistics sectors strongly, and should be carefully considered by higher education degrees in setting their priorities so as to favour employability, job retention and job satisfaction for the coming years

Statistička analiza podataka u eksperimentalnim istraživanjima usvajanja drugoga jezika

This book is dedicated to the application of statistical analysis in experimental studies of second language acquisition. In terms of second language acquisition, the focus is on linguistically oriented research, where emphasis is placed on the study of systematic knowledge of the second language and its properties at different levels of the language structure. When it comes to statistics, most attention is dedicated to those concepts and analytical steps that are important for all or most of statistical tests used in research on second language acquisition. Emphasis is also placed on the relationship between descriptive and inferential statistics and the importance of research design for all aspects of data analysis. The book is written as a scientific monograph that can also be used as a manual for beginners who wish to familiarise themselves with basic statistical procedures and the assumptions behind them, applied to the study of linguistic properties of learner language. The topics covered do not require prior knowledge of statistics or in-depth familiarity with issues in second language acquisition. The approach is conceptual rather than practical: no instructions are given on how to perform the analyses in any statistical software and no exercises are included. The book is structured as follows. Chapter 1 explains the motivation behind the book, focusing on the role of statistical analysis in second language acquisition research. Chapter 2 deals with those steps in the research process that precede statistical data analysis. More precisely, it summarises the fundamental methodological matters that should be taken into account when planning an experimental study and associated data analysis, which are related to research hypotheses, variable measurement, the selection of participants and stimuli, and research design. This chapter also describes the steps involved in the preparation of data for statistical analysis and provides guidelines for checking the reliability of the data collection instrument. Chapter 3 is dedicated to descriptive statistics, that is, to the initial description of data via different kinds of descriptive statistical measures, and data visualization using different types of graphs. Chapter 4 builds on the descriptive background of Chapter 3, dealing with inferential statistics. It introduces the notions of statistical significance and null hypothesis testing, explains the logic behind statistical testing and outlines the criteria for choosing a statistical test. Chapter 5 explains the calculation procedures of several frequently used “traditional” tests (such as correlation, t-tests and analysis of variance, as well as their non-parametric equivalents) and it gives a brief overview of some of the more advanced tests, which are increasingly used in language research. This chapter also discusses current issues related to the reliability of significance- -based statistical tests and suggests possible solutions, from more careful interpretation of test results and effect size calculations to reliance on robust statistics. Chapter 6 discusses the reporting of experimental studies of second language acquisition. It provides general guidelines for reporting experimental research and describes the structure of an experimental research report on second language acquisition, primarily focusing on scientific articles for publication in a scientific journal or an edited volume. Finally, Chapter 7 outlines possible future trends in the use of statistics in empirical disciplines such as second language acquisition, and puts forward a call for an integrated consideration of statistical analysis and the field’s theoretical knowledge, and for more thorough methodological training of second language acquisition researchers in our local context

    Language Professionals and Culture Professionals

The contemporary language industry is characterised by a growing presence of new professions requiring competences in language and technology. Even though it might seem that such developments could marginalise culture-related knowledge, this chapter claims that this is not the case, and that (inter)cultural competence remains an important asset even for the tech-focused professions. The evidence presented for this claim comes from data sources ranging from a literature review to job advertisements and interviews with industry representatives, conducted and collected within the ongoing project UPgrading the SKIlls of Linguistics and Language Students. The project identifies seven competence clusters that it proposes for inclusion in the university education of future language professionals. An (inter)cultural cluster is placed at the core, jointly with the disciplinary (language-related) and transversal knowledge and skills, and is seen as required for all students of languages and linguistics

Overview of learning materials aimed to educate students of languages and linguistics for the 21st century job market. UPSKILLS Intellectual output 3.1

The core of the UPSKILLS project is constituted by the creation of learning content dedicated to topics deemed to be of particular importance for twenty-first century students of languages and linguistics. This learning content should help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed for the contemporary job market, which offers numerous new opportunities both within and beyond traditional language-oriented professions, but which also requires skills not typically included, or at least insufficiently present in university curricula. However, UPSKILLS is not alone in wishing to bring the knowledge and skills of language and linguistics students more up-to-date with the job market, and some resources relevant for the topics it aims to address have already been created in other projects, within university curricula or in other related contexts. In order to avoid duplicating materials that have already been made available by others, the first step in the creation of UPSKILLS learning content is the present overview of existing materials

Digitalizacija jezika i kulture kroz elektronske korpuse: primer timočkih govora

The aim of this paper is to describe the ongoing development of an electronic corpus of the Timok vernacular, a rare example of an oral dialect corpus of the Serbian language. The corpus comprises data relevant for both linguistics and studies of (traditional) culture, and as such it can help bridge the gap currently present between corpus linguistics and digital humanities. The material contained in the corpus is a result of fieldwork research conducted between 2015 and 2017, mainly within the project Protecting the intangible culture of the Timok vernacular. The paper outlines the phases of fieldwork research, in particular the selection of villages and participants, as well as the open-ended interview methodology applied in data collection. The steps in corpus development are presented next: transcription, annotation (part-of-speech tagging, lemmatization, normalization), and the resulting search options. In addition, an overview of previous and ongoing studies based on the collected material are provided, capturing the domains of dialectology, Balkan linguistics, socio-, areal and anthropological linguistics, as well as studies of folklore and traditional culture, with suggestions for future research in these domains

Together We Are Stronger: Bootstrapping Language Technology Infrastructure for South Slavic Languages with CLARIN.SI

In this chapter we describe the recent developments in language technology infrastructure building for three South Slavic languages – Slovenian, Croatian, and Serbian. These developments are primarily the result of intense coordination between different projects. Our experience shows that the infrastructure for language technologies can be significantly improved even in countries with a less favourable socio-economic situation, such as Croatia and Serbia, where insufficient organizational capacity and funding are available for a standard, top-down development. We suggest that such countries can adopt a bottom-up approach in which even minor, personal, or topically marginal projects are coordinated within the emerging community. Furthermore, such bottom-up environments can benefit from coordination with other similar environments, in our case in Croatia or Serbia. We further propose that bottom-up approaches can profit from coordination with top-down environments in neighbouring and/or culturally close countries, Slovenia in our case, with both sides experiencing a positive impact. We illustrate the synergistic effect of these different types of collaboration and coordination on the examples of textual data harvesting, manual data annotation, language tool development, and general infrastructure building. We wrap up with the most recent development – a CLARIN knowledge centre for South Slavic languages, where the collaborative methodology is expanded to all South Slavic languages. We close the chapter with a set of suggestions and good practices for researchers and language communities in a similar position to the ones discussed in this chapter

Dettaglio fonetico e grammatica. Alcune acquisizioni recenti

    No full text
