Déjà déjà visité : Mike Bayne, Jocelyne Purdie, Maayke Schurer
"In this intimate field guide to Kingston’s contemporary artistic ecology, curator Sunny Kerr takes readers on a journey through the work of Mike Bayne, Jocelyn Purdie, and Maayke Schurer. A dynamic visual compendium follows Kerr's narrative adventure, challenging our perception of our physical environment and casting us as tourists confronting familiar, already-experienced situations coloured by a lens of estrangement" -- p. 'If I should die tonight' poem
Humorous poem copied by Harrison Kerr and written by Benjamin Franklin King ca. 1890. The poem, titled "If I should die tonight," jokes about money owed to the author and the shock he would experience at being repaid upon his death. It was written as a parody of a serious contemporary poem of the same title.
Harrison Henry Kerr (1839-1901), born in North Georgetown, Ohio, served along with his brother, Ezra, as a private in Company D of the 58th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, on December 29, 1862., and held for three months before being exchanged and returning to his regiment. He was discharged on January 14, 1865. Following the war, he was married to Elizabeth (Rettig) Kerr. The two lived in Cleveland and had one son, Harrison McKinley Kerr. In 1888, he joined the Memorial Post No. 141, Grand Army of the Republic. He is buried in North Georgetown Cemetery
The use of antiepileptic medication in adults with intellectual disabilities: a serious conundrum
Until the early 1990s, six major drugs existed in the treatment of epilepsy. By 2004, ten new antiepilepsy drugs (AEDs) were made available in the UK. Currently, the available number of AEDs has grown to over 20. There are a number of concerns posed by these medications, ranging from teratogenic concerns to negative impact upon cognitive function to worsening behavior, all which can have an effect upon quality of life of the person with epilepsy (PWE). While treatment guidelines have suggested that the newer AEDs tend to be better tolerated and affect cognitive functioning to a lesser degree than older AED options, the evidence base applied to people with intellectual disability (ID) has not been suitably explored. About 25 % of PWE also have an ID. This group has communication issues, premature mortality, more treatment resistance, difficulties in making informed choices, and greater risks of physical and mental health comorbidities. There is no specific prescribing guidance for this large, heterogeneous, and vulnerable group.
Identifying adverse effects to treatment is extremely challenging in PWE with an ID due to the presence of complex comorbidities and often profound communication barriers. This chapter looks to consolidate the current evidence and good practice needed to prescribe specifically in a PWE and ID. It takes into consideration and brings together a wide range of contextual good practice literature from both the ID research world, such as concepts of mental capacity, and the epilepsy world, such as the latest epilepsy medication and drug effects, thus helping straddle the diverse yet fast-developing nature of both the epilepsy and ID scientific worlds. To help present concepts and to highlight clinical complexity, ten case vignettes have been presented. It would be considered an essential read to any clinical practitioner who manages PWE and ID
Oral history interview with Mike Millard
Mike Millard attended Oklahoma State University (OSU) from 1993 to 1999 and was active in the student LGBT association and Gay Speakers Bureau. He recalls his time as a resident assistant in the Kerr Drummond dorm and serving on the executive board of the Residence Halls Association. He shares memories of various campus activities highlighting LGBTQ+ issues and his experience creating and manning a campus helpline. After completing bachelor's degrees in psychology, English, and elementary education, Millard discusses attending grad school at Emporia State University and his career as a middle school teacher. The OSU Diverse Sexuality and Gender Collection is comprised of interviews which document the cultural history of diverse sexuality and gender identities of Oklahoma State University's (OSU) alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters
Experimental validation of nonlinear Fourier transform-based Kerr-nonlinearity identification over a 1600km SSMF link
Recently, a nonlinear Fourier transform-based Kerr-nonlinearity identification algorithm was demonstrated for a 1000 km NZDSF link with accuracy of 75%. Here, we demonstrate an accuracy of 99% over 1600 km SSMF. Reasons for improved accuracy are discussed.Accepted Author ManuscriptTeam Sander Wahl
Super music
I was invited by director of Superdeluxe, Mike Kubek, to perform at Superdeluxe, Tokyo in June 2011. Superdeluxe is Tokyo’s most popular experimental performance space and has hosted major names such as Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi. I performed live, Super Music, which comprised: two laptops, 6 hand built sensor base instruments, and pure data and gem patches, and a 3x data projection. I performed along side local Japanese artists: nonSectRadicals, Cal Lyall (Palimpsest and curator of Test Tone), Nobunaga Ken and Takashi Azumaya, (previous curator of Tokyo's Mori Art Museum).http://www.super-deluxe.com/2011/6/24/luminosity
International Harmonization and the Gains from Trade
International harmonization of standards and regulations is often a goal expressed in trade agreements because it is expected to yield gains from trade. Absence of progress toward harmonization is often interpreted as being motivated by protectionism, with differences in standards and regulations seen as non-tariff barriers. While protectionism may well be the source of resistance to harmonization, there may be other reasons it is not pursued. These alternative explanations have not received much attention from economists. In this article some of these alternatives are outlined - demand effects from altering standards, switching costs, proprietary technologies. The article concludes that proposals for international harmonization need to be scrutinized carefully.demand effects, harmonization, regulation, standards, switching costs, TBT, International Relations/Trade,
Magnetised Kerr/CFT correspondence
AbstractThe tools of Kerr/CFT correspondence are applied to the Kerr black hole embedded in an axial external magnetic field. Its extremal near horizon geometry remains a warped and twisted product of AdS2×S2. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra, generating the asymptotic symmetries of the near horizon geometry, is found. It is used to reproduce, via the Cardy formula, the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy of the magnetised Kerr black hole as the statistical microscopic entropy of a dual CFT. The presence of the background magnetic field makes available also a second dual CFT picture, based on the U(1) electromagnetic symmetry, instead of the only rotational one of the standard non-magnetised Kerr spacetime.A Meissner-like effect, where at extremality the external magnetic field is expelled out of the black hole, allows us to infer the value of the mass for these magnetised extremal black holes. The generalisation to the CFT dual for the magnetised extreme Kerr–Newman black hole is also presented
