The valuation of biodiversity conservation by the South African Khomani San "bushmen" community

    No full text
The restitution of land to the Khomani San "bushmen" and Mier "agricultural" communities in May 2002 marked a significant shift in conservation in the Kgalagadi area in South Africa. The Khomani San and Mier communities were awarded land inside and outside the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Given that the Khomani San interact more with nature, biodiversity conservation will only benefit from the land restitution in this case if the Khomani San are good environmental stewards. Therefore, this paper uses the contingent valuation method to investigate the values assigned to biodiversity conserved under the various forms of land tenure arrangements by the Khomani San in the Kgalagadi area and compares them to similar valuations by the adjacent Mier community. The proposed conservation programme sought to plant as many native trees, shrubs and grasslands as required to reduce biodiversity loss by 10% in terms of the quantities of each of the selected major species of the area. Despite the fact that the conservation programme has both winners and losers when implemented under any of the three land tenure arrangements considered, the findings suggest that the Khomani San, whose attitudes towards modern conservation have not been evaluated until now, and the adjacent Mier community generally attach a significant economic value to biodiversity in their area. The net economic value for conserving biodiversity under the various forms of land tenure arrangements by the Khomani San ranged from R928 to R4 672 relative to the Mier community’s range of R25 600 to R64 000. However, for both communities, in order for all members of the local communities to support biodiversity conservation unconditionally, mechanisms for fair distribution of the associated costs and benefits should be put in place.biodiversity, contingent valuation, Khomani San, Kgalagadi, land restitution

Livelihoods and the farming sector of the Mier community in the Northern Cape Province

Dissertation (M Inst Agrar ( Plant Production))--University of Pretoria, 2007.Being part of the semi-arid, southern Kalahari, the Mier area has a complex and sensitive ecosystem, with a low carrying capacity. Factors, such as population growth, uneconomical farm units and restricted communal areas, have resulted in serious degradation of the natural resource base. Due to their strong agricultural history, the Mier community is generally still perceived as being agriculturally inclined, which easily leads to an overall main objective, namely "to stabilising the Mier community in their agricultural environment". Development and assistance initiatives mostly focus on the natural resource base. The majority of the Mier community, however, has undergone an evolutionary process which has changed their attitudes to agriculture. In order to determine the current role of agriculture, this study aims to identify the livelihood strategies of the Mier community in the dynamic sphere of conditions and trends, livelihood resources as well as institutional and organisational structures. The main socio-economic results are as follows: (a) forty-two percent of the total economically active age (EAA) group is unemployed, with the highest rate under EAA persons younger than 30, i.e. 58%; (b) households diversify in one or more of the following livelihood sustaining activities: (i) casual labour (49%), (ii) government allowances (50%), (iii) livestock agriculture (46%), (iv) permanent work (28%), (v) migrancy (33%), (vi) fruit/vegetable/pasture production for own consumption (28%), (vii) support through private transfers (21%), and (viii) small scale trading activities (11%); (c) households perceive the following as their most important livelihood strategies: government allowances for 43% of all households, permanent work for 21 %, casual labour for 16% and livestock for only 10% of all households. The following results from this study indicate that the role of agriculture is declining. (a) Fifty-four percent of the community do not own livestock. (b) Only 39% of people who are not full time involved in agriculture, are very interested in farming, 19% are fairly interested and 42% are not interested. Only 4% of the grade 10-12 pupils are very interested, 42% fairly interested and 54% not interested in agriculture. (c) None of the communal farmers regard their livestock as their main livelihood strategy. For them, livestock mainly playa supplementary role, supplying milk and sometimes meat. (d) For every 55 persons who perceive a lack of land as the major problem of the Mier area, 100 persons believe that it is rather a lack of employment opportunities. It is concluded that the image of the Mier community as being a farming community should change to a community looking urgently for alternative livelihood opportunities. Support through agricultural assistance would only benefit a limited part of the community and it would exclude many of the poorest households.Plant Production and Soil Scienceunrestricte

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    (A) HEK293 cells were transfected with a plasmid encoding myc tag alone (lane 1) or myc-tagged -MIER1α (lane 2), -MIER2 (lane 3), -MIER3 (lane 4) or -MTA1 (lane 5). Extracts were either loaded directly on the gel (panels e-f) or subjected to immunoprecipitation with the 9E10 anti-myc tag antibody (panels a-d). The immunoprecipitates were analyzed by Western using either anti-HDAC1 (panel a) or anti-HDAC2 (panel b). The blots in panels a & b were stripped and restained using the 9E10 anti-myc tag antibody (panels c-d) to verify levels of MIER protein in each immunoprecipitate. Whole cell extracts were analyzed by Western using anti-HDAC1 (panel e) or anti-HDAC2 (panel f) to verify equivalent HDAC levels in each sample. This experiment was performed 4 times. (B) Quantitation of the HDAC and MIER band intensity in the HEK293 immunoprecipitates was performed by densitometry using Image J 1.50g, as described in the Materials and Methods. Plotted is the average HDAC:MIER ratio ± S.D. for the 4 experiments from (A) and 3 experiments from Fig 5A (minus IP4 values only). (C) HEK293 cells were transfected with a plasmid encoding myc-tagged -isoform 1 (lane 1) or -isoform 3 (lane 2) of MIER3. The experiment was performed twice and Western analysis was completed as in (A). Note that a longer exposure than in (A) is shown here, in order to enhance visualization of the MIER3 associated HDAC bands. (D) MCF7 cells were transfected with a plasmid encoding myc-tag alone (lane 1) or myc-tagged -MIER1α (lane 2), -MIER2 (lane 3) or -MIER3 (lane 4). Western analysis was performed as in (A). (E) Quantitation of the HDAC and MIER band intensities in the MCF7 immunoprecipitates was performed as described in (B). Plotted is the average HDAC:MIER ratio ± S.D. for 4 experiments. (F) HEK293 cells were transfected with a plasmid encoding myc-tag alone or myc-tagged -MIER1α, -MIER2 or -MIER3. Extracts were subjected to immunoprecipitation with the 9E10 anti-myc tag antibody. Immunoprecipitates were assayed for histone deacetylase activity using [3H]-labeled histones as described in the Methods and Materials. HDAC assays, with or without TSA, were performed on duplicate samples and plotted is the average of three experiments ± S.D. Statistical analysis, using one-way ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey HSD, revealed all -TSA values were significantly different each other (p0.05).</p

    No full text
The desire for definitive data and the semantic web drive for inference over heterogeneous data sources requires co-reference resolution to be performed on those data. In particular, name disambiguation is required to allow accurate publication lists, citation counts and impact measures to be determined. This paper describes a graph-based approach to author disambiguation on large-scale citation networks. Using self-citation, co-authorship and document source analyses, AKTiveAuthor clusters papers, achieving precision of 0.997 and recall of 0.818 over a test group of eight surname clusters

Jersey Homesteads (later the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whom had emigrated from Europe. President John F. Kennedy sent a telegram to the citizens of Roosevelt, New Jersey, apologizing for not being able to attend the memorial dedication in honor of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Jersey Homesteads became Roosevelt in 1945 in honor of the president.) President Kennedy expressed his gratitude to the people of Roosevelt for constructing the memorial, and commented that it will serve as a constant reminder of Roosevelt's good works
