The first part, on The Culture, situates Middleton within an historical and theoretical overview of early modern textual production, reproduction, circulation, and reception. An introductory essay by Gary Taylor (The Order of Persons) surveys lists of persons written by or connected to Middleton, using the complex relationship between textual and social orders to trace the evolution of textual culture in England during the Middleton century (1580-1679). Ten. original essays then focus on Middletons connections to different aspects of textual culture in that century: authorship (by MacD. P. Jackson), manuscripts (Harold Love), legal texts (Edward Geiskes), censorship (Richard Burt), printing (Adrian Weiss), visual texts (John Astington), music (Andrew. Sabol), stationers and living authors (Cyndia Clegg), posthumous publishing (Maureen Bell), and early readers (John Jowett). The rest of the volume, supplies the documentation for claims made in the first part. No full textElizabeth and Middleton Reefs are the world’s southernmost open ocean platform reefs, supporting a unique mix of tropical and subtropical species. While isolated reefs, such as Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs, are often described as being ‘near pristine’ due to limited local anthropogenic impacts, these isolated reefs (like coral reefs globally) are being increasingly exposed to changing environmental conditions, particularly ocean warming. Quantifying the status and trends on these reefs is critical to understand the responses of these reef ecosystems to contemporary and future disturbances
End-to-End QoS Support for a Medical Grid Service Infrastructure
No full textQuality of Service support is an important prerequisite for the adoption of Grid technologies for medical applications. The GEMSS Grid infrastructure addressed this issue by offering end-to-end QoS in the form of explicit timeliness guarantees for compute-intensive medical simulation services. Within GEMSS, parallel applications installed on clusters or other HPC hardware may be exposed as QoS-aware Grid services for which clients may dynamically negotiate QoS constraints with respect to response time and price using Service Level Agreements. The GEMSS infrastructure and middleware is based on standard Web services technology and relies on a reservation based approach to QoS coupled with application specific performance models. In this paper we present an overview of the GEMSS infrastructure, describe the available QoS and security mechanisms, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods with a Grid-enabled medical imaging service

Information Extraction from the Long Tail. A Socio-Technical AI Approach for Criminology Investigations into the Online Illegal Plant Trade
No full textIn today's online forums and marketplaces cybercrime activity can often be found lurking in plain sight behind legitimate posts. Most popular criminology techniques are either manually intensive, and so do not scale well, or focus on statistical summaries across websites and can miss infrequent behaviour patterns. We present an inter-disciplinary (computer science, criminology and conservation science) socio-technical artificial intelligence (AI) approach to information extraction from the long tail of online forums around internet-facilitated illegal trades of endangered species. Our methodology is highly iterative, taking entities of interest (e.g. endangered plant species, suspects, locations) identified by a criminologist and using them to direct computer science tools including crawling, searching and information extraction over many steps until an acceptable resulting intelligence package is achieved. We evaluate our approach using two case study experiments, each based on a one-week duration criminology investigation (aided by conservation science experts) and evaluate both named entity (NE) directed graph visualization and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modelling. NE directed graph visualization consistently outperforms topic modelling for discovering connected entities in the long tail of online forums and marketplaces

The Immunoglobulin G Heavy Chain (IGHG) genes of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus
No full textDolphin Immunoglobulin G Heavy Chain (IGHG) sequences were obtained by PCR amplification of cDNA from peripheral blood leukocytes using degenerate primers. Analysis of full-length sequences indicated the presence of two expressed isotypes, IGHG1 and IGHG2 that differ mainly in the hinge region of the molecule. Genomic Southern blot analysis indicated that the IGHG1 and IGHG2 genes are most likely present in single copies. The inferred amino acid sequences show greatest similarity between the dolphin and other closely related artiodactyl species. The genetic structure of the IGHG genes were deduced through genomic PCR and revealed that the hinge regions of both IGHG1 and IGHG2 are encoded by a single exon. The transmembrane region of the dolphin IGHG chain shows similarity to the transmembrane region of other mammalian IGHG chains with a canonical CART motif. This is in contrast to the unusual Ser to Gly substitution previously found in the dolphin IGHM transmembrane region, and the functional significance of this variation for B cell antigen-receptor dimer activation remains unknown
