Michael Jordan (1963-) was born in Brooklyn, New York but moved with his family to Wilmington, NC as a toddler. He played three sports in high school but was considered too small (5'11") as a sophomore to start on the basketball team. After growing four inches that summer, Jordan was # 23 at E. A. Laney High School in Wilmington. He was a McDonald's All-American in high school, and the ACC Freshman of the Year at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where he also helped the Tarheels win the National Championship in 1982. He went on to play for the Chicago Bulls in 1984, were he became a league star known for his prolific scoring. He helped popularize the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s

It should have been a great night for the White Sox, Chicago\u27s neglected team. Instead, in the seventh inning word spread across America and across the stadium that the man who threw out the first pitch was about to retire from the Chicago Bulls and the NBA

Leadership Lessons via Michael Jordan
COVID-19 was a time that our stores closed to our customers, many for the first time in decades and even generations for the scores of NSRA members who are family firms. During the COVID-19 “work at home period,” when many owners and employees were hunkered down where they live, one of the interesting distractions was being able to watch “The Last Dance,” ESPN’s 10-part docuseries sanctioned by Michael Jordan about his and the Chicago Bulls’ dynasty of the 1990s. The series holds many leadership lessons to consider relevant to family firms and to organizations considering how to stay resilient in the global pandemic’s very “unprecedented” turbulent times

This presentation is a reflection that seeks to problematize the construction of the sports idol in the "neoliberal era" of sport based on an analysis of the series "The Last Dance" that addresses the trajectory of Michael Jordan.
