Orthogonally Bi-Functional Fluorescent Zeolite-L Micro-crystals
Microcrystals of zeolite L are functionalized with two different fluorescent dyes in a spatially resolved manner. The multiple functionalities and the selective derivatization of the channel entrances and of the coat of the zeolites result in interesting photophysical behavior as well as potential uses. The concept shown for the dyes can in principle be applied to any type of molecule

The pathogen construct in risk analysis
Project risk analysis has traditionally emphasized the analysis of external threats. Here we argue that internal decisions and structures are more fundamental, because they determine which external events pose risks to project management. A “pathogen” metaphor is used to understand these internal sources of risk, in an analysis of failure in two sets of projects that lie on the border between the private and public sectors. This analysis goes beyond earlier work on organizational pathogens by treating them as subjective interpretations, not objective conditions. The study suggests that the more insidious risks to which a project is exposed involve different project members holding contradictory beliefs about what is pathogenic and what is protective
Mending Canada's Employment Insurance Quilt: The Case for Restoring Equity
Under the current Employment Insurance (EI) system, long-lasting EI benefits are more easily accessed in regions with high unemployment rates than in regions with low unemployment rates where workers face tighter restrictions to access short-lived benefits. This complicated screening procedure, intended to better support the various circumstances facing unemployed workers across the country, creates a number of undesirable consequences: the most glaring being pockets of high, chronic unemployment. The goals and intentions of the EI regime should be simplified to better address the needs of Canada’s unemployed workers.Social Policy, Canada, employment insurance (EI), EI reforms
Assembling Micro Crystals through Cooperative Coordinative Interactions
(Figure Presented) In splendor arrayed: Coordinative interactions between zinc ions and terpyridine ligands were used to produce self-assembled one-dimensional arrays of zeolite L crystals. By intercalating zeolite crystals with different organic fluorophores (pyronine: green, oxonine: red), multicolor emitters can be obtained (see picture)
Philosophy of the imagination : time, immanence and the events that wound us in Wilson Harris’s Jonestown
This is a special issue of the Journal of Postcolonial Writing edited by Lorna Burns and Wendy KnepperIn his fictional recreation of the People’s Temple massacre, Jonestown, Harris presents us with a protagonist who counter-actualizes the trauma that wounds him, living creatively out of the event and constructing an alternative present-future. Drawing on Deleuzian philosophy, this essay argues for a re-conceptualization of Jonestown in terms that evoke not only Deleuze’s philosophy of time and immanence but also his distinction, via Nietzsche, between active and reactive forces. By means of a character (Francisco Bone) who embraces the power of transformation, creation and difference-in-itself, Harris demonstrates the value of active forces that do not depend on external recognition or dialectical negation in order to be for a postcolonial philosophy of the imagination.Peer reviewe
City piece on Portland police chief Michael Chitwood\u27s recent decision to work
City piece on Portland police chief Michael Chitwood\u27s recent decision to work with city officials in drafting plans for a citizen panel to review allegations of police misconduct. Coming on the heels of a Dec. 31 riot in Portland\u27s Old Port, which resulted in complaints of police using exessive force, some are wondering if the incident finally convinced Chitwood that such a panel is necessary
