Do student and survey characteristics affect the quality of UK undergraduate medical education course evaluation? A systematic review of the literature
The purpose was to investigate whether student and survey characteristics affect the quality of course evaluation in UK undergraduate medical education. The search included several databases, five journals relevant to medical education and grey literature. Twenty-one publications met entry criteria from various institutions. All included information on the main outcome response rate while there was limited information on completeness rate. The overall response rate is 88%. Being younger, female and at an earlier stage of learning resulted in a higher response rate. The lower number of questions resulted in a higher response rate. Paper-based evaluations had a higher mean response rate than online course evaluations. Courses with evaluations at the start and the end of the course resulted in the highest mean response rate of 90%. These results suggest that student and survey characteristics can affect the quality of course evaluation and thus should be considered when designing an evaluation

Physician Care as a Moral Obligation in Health Care Practice
From the beginning of their education and training, health care professionals are introduced to the principles of patient-centered care. Across health care systems internationally, professional codes of practice emphasize that the primary obligation is to prioritize the interests of patients,1,2 reflecting the moral ethos of the profession. It shapes not only what clinicians do but also their identity as moral agents.
However, the emphasis on prioritizing patients has had an unintended consequence: the systematic marginalization of health care professionals’ own well-being. Although patient-centered care remains morally foundational, its near-exclusive focus risks obscuring a parallel ethical responsibility; namely, the duty to maintain the conditions that enable safe, compassionate, and sustainable practice. This duty demands recognition of a moral obligation at the level of health care systems, not merely a matter of personal preservation or resilience on behalf of the physician
Unencountering
In his latest blog, Dr Chris Tiplady discusses how he and his colleague, Senior Lecturer, Mr Michael Atkinson at the University of Sunderland, teach students how to move on from patient encounters, how to cope, how to balance all that uncertainty and be able to move on to the next patient or even just go home to the family
Closed automated large-scale bioreactors for manufacturing mesenchymal stromal cells for clinical use
Over 600 clinical trials using mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) or mesenchymal stem cells have been listed on ClinicalTrials.gov. This site is run by the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health. Obtaining MSCs for clinical trials is a cumbersome, time consuming, and laborious process when done manually. In addition, the prolonged period of ex vivo expansion includes the risk of the cells becoming microbially infected. This chapter talks about an automated closed system that could be scaled up for manufacturing MSCs for clinical trials. It reviews the design of a semi-automated closed system bioreactor capable of manufacturing mesenchymal stromal cells for clinical use. Terumo BCT sell a machine called the QuantumTM specifically for manufacturing cells, including MSCs, for clinical purposes. The National Institutes of Health analyzed bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) from the Quantum system to determine if they retained their differentiation potential
Military Life at Fort Atkinson 1819-1827
This thesis uses an in depth examination of documents and other archeological finds in order to give an accurate description of military life at Fort Atkinson from 1819-1827.During the summer of 1956, the Nebraska State Historical Society Field Party, conducted by Marvin F. Kivett, Director of the Museum, excavated a portion of the site of the fort, near Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. The author was granted access to the material recovered by this archeological field party for the writing of this thesis.
The author first gives an examination of the background behind For Atkinson, including a description of the Yellowstone Expedition and the expedition for Council Bluffs. The author then goes on to discuss the construction of the fort, the general routines of those who lived at Fort Atkinson, the quartermaster and their duties, the medical department and even details of the musicians and band that worked at the fort. The author also wrote of the relations Fort Atkinson had with neighboring Indian tribes and finally discusses the reasons behind the decision to abandon Fort Atkinson and the overall significance of Fort Atkinson.
