Roderick Michael, \u2780, speaks about how Bard College turned him into an open-minded, well-rounded person and mentor for his students. He also recalls his experiences being a student of color in the seventies at Bard, being introduced to types of people he didn\u27t know existed, and his engagement with professors at Bard. In particular, he remembers his Latin professor, who found a way to drive Roderick to greatness in his class after he caught Roderick cheating.https://digitalcommons.bard.edu/oral_hist/1076/thumbnail.jp

Studies on the synthesis of tetrahydropyrans via oxa-Michael addition leading towards the total synthesis of Montanacin D

    No full text
The first chapter describes a facile stereochemical study and synthetic route towards di-substituted tetrahydropyran rings. The key steps performed in this section involve cross-metathesis and Ozone-Wittig reactions of each alkene substrate, followed by an efficient oxa-Michael cyclisation to give the di-substituted tetrahydropyran products in good yields. These tetrahydropyrans adopt chair-like conformations where diequatorial products are exclusively obtained under kinetic control. The second and third chapters explore an efficient total synthetic route towards Montanacin D. Considered as a unique member of its family, Montanacin D is of great interest as the tetrahydropyran is adjacent to the butenolide moiety, which provides conformational rigidity. The approach to the molecule is done by way of a convergent synthesis, where the key reactions involve high diastereoselectivity in the oxa-Michael step in mild conditions and a more efficient manner of forming the alkene bonds – methods established in the previous chapter.Doctor of Philosoph

Polyphony and the anxiety of influence in the fiction of Henry James

James's fiction, especially in the Middle Phase, centres on the figure of the artist and is characterized by, the two interrelated aspects which previous criticism has largely overlooked: the Bakhtinian 'polyphonic' -creation of 'author-thinkers'; and the conflict between ephebes and precursors, for which Harold-Bloom's concept of 'the-anxiety of influence' is the most illuminating model. Polyphony is the narrative mode, and influence is the intra-artistic, theme. These, as the Introduction to the thesis makes clear, are rehearsed in James's inaugural novel, Roderick Hudson. Rowland Mallet is an author-thinker, and his failure is caused by authorial limitations. His monologism -is impaired by his mistaking empathy for the authorial sympathy. Likewise, Hudson's failure does not arise from a mercurial temperament, but from a polyphonic shortcoming: not possessing the power of fiction to contain the fiction of power in, his mentor. And the relationships among the three artists - Gloriani, Hudson and Singleton - perfectly exemplify the Bloomian-theme. It is these two concepts, polyphony and influence, which are the major preoccupation in the Middle Phase; as, the works chosen demonstrate. These are a novella, a novel, and a number of short stories all of which have been unjustifiably neglected. Chapter One, on The Aspern Papers, argues that Tina Bordereau, far from being, the artless victim seen by many critics, actually challenges and defeats the narrator by the very form of her narrative. Her 'realist' discourse undermines his language of 'romance', and shows up its internal unstability. Chapter Two is an extensive study of the critical reception of The Tragic Muse. The most common areas of critical attention have been its contemporary topicality, its relation to previous novels on similar themes, and the possible genealogy of Gabriel Nash. Those have all missed the core of the work. - Chapter Three demonstrates how polyphony and the anxiety of influence make the novel what it really is. Influence arises from the juxtaposition of, and the wrestling between, artistic ephebes and their precursors (Nick and Nash,, Miriam and Madame Carre). The dialogic quality defined by Bakhtin is crucial to the proper, and even-handed, characterization of all, the conflicts in the novel. And since most of James's tales in the eighties and nineties -are about 'masters - and acolytes, the anxiety of influence remains central. Chapter Four is a study of 'The Author of Beltraffiol' and 'The Lesson of the Master'. Again the characters' manipulations are a crucial focus in a way that G6rard Genette's terminology helps to illuminate. The fact that the ephebe is the author-thinker emphasizes the inextricability of the Bakhtinian and the Bloomian in James. Just as polyphony offers a different focus for explicating the poetics of James's fiction; so the ephebal conflict provides the basis for a fresh perception of James's own artistic struggle

PRODUCT PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS - ARTHUR D. LITTLE MATRIX

In recent decades we have witnessed an unseen dynamism among companies, which is explained by their desire to engage in more activities that provide a high level of development and diversification. Thus, as companies are diversifying more and more, their managers confront a number of challenges arising from the management of resources for the product portfolio and the low level of resources with which companies can identify, at a time. Responding to these challenges, over time were developed a series of analytical product portfolio methods through which managers can balance the sources of cash flows from the multiple products and also can identify the place and role of products, in strategic terms, within the product portfolio. In order to identify these methods the authors of the present paper have conducted a desk research in order to analyze the strategic marketing and management literature of the last 2 decades. Widely were studied a series of methods that are presented in the marketing and management literature as the main instruments used within the product portfolio strategic planning process. Among these methods we focused on the Arthur D. Little matrix. Thus the present paper has the purpose to outline the characteristics and strategic implications of the ADL matrix within a companyâ€(tm)s product portfolio. After conducting this analysis we have found that restricting the product portfolio analysis to the A.D.L. matrix is not a very wise decision. The A.D.L. matrix among with other marketing tools of product portfolio analysis have some advantages and disadvantages and is trying to provide, at a time, a specific diagnosis of a companyâ€(tm)s product portfolio. Therefore, the recommendation for the Romanian managers consists in a combined use of a wide range of tools and techniques for product portfolio analysis. This leads to a better understanding of the whole mix of product markets, included in portfolio analysis, the strategic position held by each product within a market, the performance potential of product portfolio and the financial aspects related to the resource allocation process for the products within the portfolio. It should also be noted that the tools and techniques specific to product portfolio analysis do not give accurate answers, despite the appearances created by the analysis stage, where the products are plotted rigorously. However, their main virtue is simplicity, as these highlight the managersâ€(tm) need for further investigations.product portfolio, ADL matrix, life cycle, competitive position, strategic analysis

The intramolecular oxa-Michael reaction for tetrahydropyran formation : mechanism and synthesis

Bistramides are a class of complex natural products containing three fragments, namely tetrahydropyran, amino acid and spiroketal. With respect to the biological relevance of Bistramide family, they have attracted much attention by the synthetic community. However, to our knowledge, no total synthesis of Bistramide D has been reported. Thus far, our laboratory has completed the synthesis of the THP ring and amino acid units, and has devised a route to the spiroketal. The current work describes a new synthetic approach towards the scale-up synthesis of THP ring. Our research group has had a longstanding interest in the synthesis of THP-containing natural products. The base- and acid-catalysed intramolecular oxa-Michael reaction proved to be a widely applicable method for the stereoselective elaboration of the THP ring. Despite the vast amount of precedents in syntheses, no clear explanation for the origin of stereocontrol has been disclosed. Thus, we provide a tangible explanation for the observed selectivity, which is based on a combined DFT and experimental study. The structural clarification of misassigned natural products has a long history and continues to be a recurring predicament. In this context, the ambiguous structural elucidation and the insufficient NMR data of Cryptoconcatone H prompted us to embark on a synthesis of the reported structure. The cis-THP core of the proposed structure was established via a tandem deprotection – intramolecular oxa-Michael cyclisation. Our synthetic study provides evidence that the proposed structure of the isolated natural product is incorrect.Doctor of Philosoph

    Total synthesis of bistramide D

The bistramides are a class of natural products isolated from the marine ascidian Lissoclinum bistratum. These molecules demonstrate significant bioactive properties, such as cytotoxicity, antiproliferative and neurotoxic activities. This thesis describes synthetic studies towards the development of the total asymmetric synthesis of one of the members, bistramide D. The structure of this natural product comprises 12 stereogenic centres and consists of three units, a tetrahydropyran (THP), an amino acid and a [6,6]-spiroketal. Building upon prior studies in our group, the synthesis of the tetrahydropyran ring has been achieved using a combination of selective cross-metathesis and an intramolecular Michael addition under kinetic control. Five different approaches were studied for the synthesis of a key intermediate, the sulfone fragment. The synthesis of the spiroketal fragment features an Au-mediated dehydrative cyclisation via a propargylic triol. The [6,6]-spiroketal unit has been successfully constructed in enantiomerically highly enriched form.DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (SPMS
