Enhancing Occupants’ Well-Being Through Qualitative Indoor Environments
In today’s competitive business environment, corporations can no longer afford to waste the potential of their workforce as personal costs of salaries and benefits are considered the most expensive items in an office building. There are certain essential factors in the employee’s workplace that influence significantly on their level of motivation and performance. The main objective of the study is to understand the relationship between the employee’s performance and their physical work environment. Lighting is an effective element in interior design, especially when it comes to deciding between natural and artificial lighting, where several light measurements, calculation, and fixtures types are needed. This paper examines a small design project in which occupants’ comfort and indoor environment quality aspects are tested through the collection of occupants’ feedback under a variety of conditions: 1. natural light in addition to energy-efficient artificial lighting, 2. acoustics, noise control and acceptable sound level indoors, and 3. thermal comfort through natural and artificial ventilation. The parameters are analyzed and concluded with various alternatives to achieve an optimum solution for better indoor working conditions for the proposed space. Finally, based on the evaluation findings, a set of recommendations is proposed to evaluate indoor working spaces’ qualities. The paper findings and proposed recommendations can help promoting a healthy environment, improving the occupant’s comfort, increasing workers’ performance, reducing stress, and ultimately enhancing the occupant’s quality of life
Influence Of Heritage Design Elements On Sustainable Interior Environments: A Case Study Of Al Seef Dubai
Heritage design elements over the years in the UAE have undergone an evolutionary process, drawing inspiration from local heritage, cultural wisdom, and accumulated knowledge. These traditional design features contribute to shaping spaces that promote a sense of belonging and local culture within the UAE's built environment. The aim of the study is to identify these heritage design elements and reassure their crucial role in interior architecture to ultimately enhance the sustainability of interior-built environments. This research paper critically examines a recent urban development in Dubai, with a specific focus on the Al Seef heritage area, characterized by historic architecture, and a contrasting space featuring contemporary structures. The investigation identifies elements of local heritage seamlessly integrated into contemporary planning and design. The research will offer a crisp overview of the design strategy, emphasizing solutions for temperature control, humidity regulation, ventilation, and maximizing natural light to achieve sustainability goals of a built environment. By employing a mixed qualitative case study research method, the findings will be systematically organized into visual tables, providing detailed descriptions evaluation summary. Through a case study analysis, this research paper imparts valuable insights gathered from local heritage design elements. It underscores how contemporary interior architecture can effectively enhance the sustainability of any interior-built environments in modern settings. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the harmonious integration of heritage and sustainability in interior design, offering lessons applicable to future architectural endeavors in similar contexts
Ecological Interior Architecture in Contemporary Mosques: Connecting Sustainability and Wellbeing in Sacred Community Spaces
Can evolving urban cities rise to the challenge of shaping community spaces that not only symbolize environmental responsibility but also nurture community wellbeing? Sacred spaces, particularly mosques, represent an underutilized opportunity to support sustainability and social resilience through interior spatial transformation. Despite their cultural significance and symbolic permanence, these spaces are rarely explored as adaptable, multifunctional environments aligned with ecological goals. This study responds to this gap by exploring how ecological interior design and environmental psychology can inform the adaptive reuse of sacred spaces into sustainable, community-centred environments. Converging on two contemporary case studies in Dubai, the net-zero Majid Al Futtaim Mosque and the Light Mosque. The research employs an exploratory triangulated approach, integrating site-based observation, visual documentation, secondary sources, and brief user and staff interviews. Findings reveal that while the Light Mosque excels in sensory-spiritual resonance through passive ecological design, the Net-Positive Mosque demonstrates technological leadership with measurable sustainability outcomes. This contrast highlights the need for a framework for future eco-mosques to unite environmental ethics with sensory and cultural intelligence, reframing sacred interiors as adaptive infrastructures of healing, resilience, and ecological citizenship

IMPACT OF HERITAGE ON CONTEMPORARY SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR DESIGN SOLUTIONS
Vernacular interior design consists of spaces that affirm a unique material, have affinity with the local region, and carries the potential to create a sustainable, harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and the built environment. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), sustainable interior design concepts were inherited from vernacular to modern spaces. Despite the abundance of research on sustainable design, few studies have addressed the relationship between vernacular and modern sustainable interior design solutions. Studies on heritage-based interior design solutions indicate the potential to extend and implement traditional concepts into contemporary design. Hence, the objective of this research is to identify the major elements of vernacular sustainable design in the UAE and measure its applicability to contemporary interior design solutions. This paper explores some examples that reflect the impact of the country’s heritage on contemporary sustainable interior design, concluding that sustainable concepts in heritage design may inspire contemporary interior designers to reflect on the effectiveness of traditional design solutions

Enhancing Creativity and Efficiency in Furniture Design through Human-AI Collaboration
This paper explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with human creativity in the context of furniture design, focusing on the development of an ergonomic office chair. As demand grows for sustainable, personalised, and innovative furniture, the study investigates how AI can augment traditional design practices through data-driven optimisation and augmented reality (AR) prototyping. A literature review highlights key developments in generative design, user interaction, and collaborative tools, while the proposed methodology combines user-centred design principles with machine learning and AR to streamline the design process. User studies involving professional designers and end-users evaluate the effectiveness of the AI-human collaboration, measuring design quality, satisfaction, and efficiency. The research presents a hybrid design framework where AI serves as a co-creator, ultimately enhancing creativity, usability, and production workflows in the furniture industry
Sensemaking of Socially-Mediated Crisis Information
In times of crisis, the human mind is often a voracious information forager. It might not be immediately apparent what one wants or needs, and people frequently look for answers to their most pressing questions and worst fears. In that context, the pandemic has demonstrated that social media sources, like erstwhile Twitter, are a rich medium for data-driven communication between experts and the public. However, as lay users, we must find needles in a haystack to distinguish credible and actionable information signals from the noise. In this work, we leverage the literature on crisis communication to propose an AI-driven sensemaking model that bridges the gap between what people seek and what they need during a crisis. Our model learns to contrast social media messages concerning expert guidance with subjective opinion and enables semantic interpretation of message characteristics based on the communicative intent of the message author. We provide examples from our tweet collection and present a hypothetical social media usage scenario to demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed model
