What Makes Help Helpful? Some Thoughts on Ethics of Solidarity Through George Orwell’s Writings
Organisations that offer personal services, whether this be
a law firm or a hospital, may be extremely good at offering technical
solutions to people, but when it comes to offering recognition, this is
much more of a challenge. These institutions often lack the ability to ‘be
respectful of each individual’.
Recognition is a central topic –often overseen– in the works of George
Orwell, the English journalist and writer who, after taking part in the
colonial system for five years, decided to ‘expiate his guilt’ by consecutively becoming homeless, taking part in agricultural labor, writing on the living conditions of the English working class and fighting as a militiaman in the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War. It was a process that spanned over several years, in which a well-educated, intellectually brilliant person, confronted and interacted with people of different countries and social backgrounds. The paper examines both failed and successful recognition experiences in Orwell’s life and work, hoping to draw some insights in how recognition works in practice.
The analysis reveals two dramatic points and leads to a pessimistic conclusion: the first point, already presented in the first part of the article, is that without recognition, no act of help will be really helpful. And secondly, real recognition only takes place between individuals. Which leads the author to conclude, confirming the initial suggestion of the paper, that full help cannot be given by any standardized procedure, and depends almost exclusively on the ability, commitment and willingness of individuals.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Três melancolias, três olhares: de Ofélia, da malmaridada e de Ramon Llull
Este texto parte de reflexões distintas que se encaminham em uma mesma abordagem teórica sobre casuísticas contendo o sentimento melancólico na literatura: 1) o fado de Ofélia no âmbito do drama hamletiano (de sabor medieval tardio), fado este que a leva à morte; 2) a cantiga popular catalã Rossinyol que vas a França, em que uma mulher malmaridada reclama de sua má sorte; e, por fim, 3) o delírio melancólico do escritor e filósofo medieval Ramon Llull. Enquanto as duas primeiras aproximações tratam da “bela sofrida” – Ofélia, a rejeitada e a outra, anônima e malcasada –, a melancolia lluliana se fundamenta na psicose megalomaníaca. A tríade exemplifica, já em períodos de fortes sabores do medievo, recorrências da crise do sujeito sintomaticamente expressas na cultura (aqui, em um escopo sempre literário, ainda que Llull seja analisado sob a ótica psicanalítica de Bassols i Puig). Assim, 1) Ofélia, esfacelada pela incerteza e o repúdio hamletiano, esse homem moderno avant la lettre; 2) a mulher sem nome e angustiada que discretamente responsabiliza o pai pela infelicidade conjugal, e 3) a genialidade de Ramon Llull, hoje o prestigiado pai da literatura da Catalunha, entrecruzam olhares díspares, como setas lançadas em direções variadas, mas que se resvalam: uma para baixo, outra para o alto e a terceira para o Outro.

Entre vida, Ramon Llinares és un projecte editorial que vol ordenar, dignificar i fer visible l’arxiu fotogràfic de Ramon Llinares que recull fotografies des del 1965 fins a finals de la dècada de 1980. La feina desenvolupada consisteix en un exercici de curadoria, edició de continguts, direcció d’art, disseny gràfic i fotografia. La peça editorial es pensa com un mostrador de l’arxiu per tal de donar-li visibilitat. Vol poder funcionar com a llibre de fotografies i com a presentació de l’arxiu per ser exposat per donar valor a un autor i un material que té un paper diferenciat en el seu context.Entre vida, Ramon Llinares es un proyecto editorial que quiere ordenar, dignificar y hacer visible el archivo fotográfico de Ramon Llinares que contiene fotografías desde 1965 hasta finales de la década de 1980. El trabajo desarrollado consiste en un ejercicio de curaduría, edición de contenidos, dirección de arte, diseño gráfico y fotografía. La pieza editorial se piensa como un mostrador del archivo para darle visibilidad. It gathers pictures taken between 1965 and the latest 1980. The developed work consists of an exercice in curatory, content edition, art direction, graphic design and photography. The editorial piece is thought as a showcase to make the archive public. It wants to be a photography book and an archive presentation to be exposed in a gallery to value the author and his work, that had a distinct voice in its catalan photography context
The interplay of author and editor gender in acceptance delays: evidence from accounting journals
The objective of this study is to examine the impact of the gender of editors and authors, as well as their interaction, on acceptance delays (ACCDEL) of articles. We focus on genders of the corresponding author and the editor overseeing the manuscript. Using data from three top accounting journals from 2015 to 2020, we conduct a regression analysis to test the hypotheses regarding longer ACCDEL for articles under female editorship or authors, those with gender-opposite editor-author pairs, and those with coincident genders editor-author pairs. We find that when the genders of editors and corresponding authors differ, there is a significant increase in ACCDEL compared to submissions where the genders of editors and corresponding authors match. L’obra i el pensament de Joan Baptista Manyà i Alcoverro resten ignorats en la marginació de les cites col·lectives i dels clixés acadèmics. Es dona una contradicció entre la importància del personatge i l’oblit del seu pensament, al només s’al·ludeix amb obvietats i repeticions de manual. Aquest desconeixement no s’adiu amb la valoració, positiva o negativa, que després es fa del seu ideari filosòfic i teològic. En aquest sentit, Gil i Ribas considera Manyà —juntament amb Maragall, Cardó i Xiberta— com l’exponent més clar del pensament cristià de començaments del segle XX a casa nostra. El propòsit de la nostra tesi és oferir les bigues mestres de la filosofia i teologia de Manyà per llegir adequadament i contextualitzada la seva obra. Considerem que només així es pot fer un judici valoratiu acurat de l’obra manyanista, més enllà de les etiquetes empobridores i simplificadores.La obra y el pensamiento de Joan Baptista Manyà i Alcoverro restan ignorados en la marginación de las citas colectivas y los clichés académicos. There is a contradiction between the importance of the author and the oblivion of his thought, which is only alluded to with obvious and textbook repetitions. This lack of knowledge is not in keeping with the positive or negative evaluation later given to his philosophical and theological ideas. In this sense, Gil i Ribas considers Manyà —together with Maragall, Cardó and Xiberta— as the clearest exponent of the early 20th century Christian thought in our country. The purpose of this thesis is to offer the master mainstays of Manyà’s philosophy and theology to read his work properly contextualized. We believe that this is the only way to make an accurate assessment of Manyà’s work, beyond impoverishing and simplifying labels
