A hidden gem. Le Corbusier’s proposition for a museum and cultural centre at Raj Ghat, New Delhi
[FR] L’article se veut une analyse de l’implication de Le Corbusier dans la création du mémorial dédié à Gandhi à Raj Ghat (New Delhi). Tout en révélant les liens qui unissent les projets esquissés pour New Delhi et ceux des différents centres culturels de Le Corbusier, l’auteur se focalise principalement sur le Musée de la Connaissance prévu pour le site. L’essai se conclut en démontrant la proximité programmatique du projet de Raj Ghat avec celui pensé pour le musée d’Ahmedabad.[EN] The essay analyses Le Corbusier‘s involvement in the creation of a Gandhi memorial at Raj Ghat, New Delhi. While demonstrating the relationship between the propositions for New Delhi and Le Corbusier’s various plans for cultural centres, the author pays particular attention to the Museum of Knowledge which was supposed to be realized at the site. The essay concludes that the Raj Ghat was intended to feature a museum with a programmatic approach similar to the museum of Ahmedabad.[ES] Este ensayo analiza la implicación de Le Corbusier en la creación de un memorial dedicado a Gandhi en Raj Ghat, Nueva Delhi. Belonging and not belonging : understanding India in novels by Paul Scott, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and V.S. Naipaul.
PhDThis thesis is essentially about the "how" and "why" of the Indian
experience as documented in novels by Paul Scott, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala
and V S Naipaul. The study points to the difficulty of arriving at any
conclusive definition of the country and its people. I show that
differences in attitudes, responses or behaviour are both overt and
subtle, and depend upon whether the writer or the character identifies
with the situation or community with which he or she interacts. It is
the individual's sense of belonging or not belonging to his or her own
group - be this along racial, cultural or gender lines - that accounts
for the differing perspectives evident in these novels. The points-of-
view of the outsider and the insider can therefore be seen as
mutual comments upon the other.
Since the struggle between belonging and not belonging becomes acute
when the old meets the new, focus is centred on communities
experiencing change. These include the British in India, West-Indian
Indians and westernised Indians. Despite their differences, all three
communities share similar reasons for either an acceptance or
rejection of the 'Other'. The thesis argues that the need for
emotional stability compels allegiance to the traditional group, while
the desire for individuality encourages surrender to the new. The
former nurtures a sense of belonging while, it is argued, that the
latter is perceived as the hallmark of those who do not belong.
Tensions arise when both these needs demand to be met. What I show to
be ironic in this struggle between belonging and not belonging is that
those things which individuals overtly reject are often unexpressed
parts of their personal pysche. The barrier between "them" and "us" is
therefore very fragile

A proteolytic fragment of Mcl-1 exhibits nuclear localization and regulates cell growth by interaction with Cdk1
Mcl-1 (myeloid cell leukaemia-1) is a Bcl-2 family member with short-term pro-survival functions but whose other functions, demonstrated by embryonic lethality of knockout mice, do not involve apoptosis. In the present study, we show a cell-cycle-regulatory role of Mcl-1 involving a shortened form of the Mcl-1 polypeptide, primarily localized to the nucleus, which we call snMcl-1. snMcl-1 interacts with the cell-cycle-regulatory protein Cdk1 (cyclin-dependent kinase 1; also known as cdc2) in the nucleus, and Cdk1 bound to snMcl-1 was found to have a lower kinase activity. The interaction with Cdk1 occurs in the absence of its cyclin partners and is enhanced on treatment of cells with G2/M blocking agents, but not by G1/S blocking. The snMcl-1 polypeptide is present during S and G2 phases and is negligible in G1. Overexpression of human Mcl-1 in a murine myeloid progenitor cell line resulted in a lower rate of proliferation. Furthermore, Mcl-1-overexpressing cells had lower total Cdk1 kinase activity compared with parental cells, in both anti-Cdk1 and anti-cyclin B1 immunoprecipitates. The latter results suggest that binding to snMcl-1 alters the ability of Cdk1 to bind its conventional partner, cyclin B1. Energy Efficient Electric Vehicle Platooning At Signalized Intersections
Growth of mobility for people and goods transportation has been increasing steadily over the years. With the perpetual increase in number of road vehicles, comes the inevitable problems of traffic and pollution. Various intelligent traffic technologies and strategies have been proposed and implemented over the years to overcome the road traffic problems. Platooning is identified as one of the ways to tackle transportation related problems efficiently. Even though platooning has been tested and implemented in highways, not much attention has been given to controlling the platoons at urban roads. When vehicles in the platoon are connected and automated, it helps them to understand the environment better and communicate efficiently for better performance. Platoons at the vicinity of signalized intersections need to accelerate and decelerate in a nonlinear manner which leads to higher energy consumption and longer travel time. Most of the previous research approaches focused on optimizing only the energy consumption or travel time of the platoons. However, studies show that the recommended driving advice from the controllers is not tracked by the drivers completely. The current research focuses on optimal trajectory planning of the electric vehicle platoons at signalized intersections. This is done by designing an energy efficient longitudinal controller for the platoons using optimal control method. The goal of this thesis is split between planning and tracking the trajectory. Thus the optimal speed profile is planned by the high level controller (i.e the optimal controller) and tracked using a battery electric vehicle model controlled by a low level controller (i.e a PID controller). The performance of the controlled platoon was verified using different scenarios and was found to perform positively under respective control objectives and constraints. The designed controlled and automated platoon by the optimal controller was able to achieve energy consumption and cost saving up to 67% when compared with intelligent driver model (IDM) platoon for a specific scenario. This research is a collaboration between the Research Institute of Highways (RIOH) in China and Rijkswaterstaat, Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in The Netherlands, to overcome the common traffic problems on road. The research was carried out at the ITS-Edulab, a Dutch traffic and transport laboratory for students. Trade Liberalization and Poverty in Nepal: an Applied General Equilibrium Analysis
Nepal aggressively liberalized its foreign trade during the 1990s. This paper attempts to estimate the impact of trade liberalization on household welfare and poverty in Nepal through the construction of a regional CGE model. The model disaggregates factors of production - capital, land, and labor - by region (urban, Terai and hills/mountains) in order to establish direct links between sector of activity, factor remuneration, and household income. In particular, certain activities are more intensive in factors from a given region (e.g. the manufacturing sector is more intensive in urban factors of production and the agriculture sector is more intensive in Terai factor of production). Regional factor remuneration in turn maps into regional household income. We find that trade liberalization reduces the nominal returns to urban factors of production in comparison with rural factors of production, resulting in a reduction in the relative income of urban households. Rural and urban households consume roughly the same share of industrial goods, but rural households consume relatively more agricultural goods and fewer services. As the fall in consumer prices in the latter two sectors are similar, there is little rural-urban difference in the variation in consumer price indices. Consumer prices generally fall in roughly the same proportion as nominal incomes such that there are negligible welfare changes. However, poverty falls substantially, with the greatest impact in rural Terai, followed by the rural hills and the mountain region, and least in urban areas.Computable general equilibrium modeling, international trade, poverty, Nepal

MPC-based motion cueing algorithm for a 6 DOF driving simulator with actuator constraints
Driving simulators are widely used for understanding Human-Machine Interaction, driver behavior and driver training. The effectiveness of such simulators in this process depends largely on their ability to generate realistic motion cues. Though the conventional filter-based motion cueing strategies have provided reasonable results, these methods result in poor workspace management. To address this issue, linear MPC-based strategies have been applied in the past. However, since the kinematics of the motion platform itself is non-linear and the required motion varies with the driving conditions, this approach tends to produce sub-optimal results. In this thesis, a nonlinear MPC-based algorithm is presented which incorporates the non-linear kinematics of the Stewart platform within the MPC algorithm to increase the effectiveness and utilize maximum workspace. Further, adaptive weights-based tuning is used to smoothen the movement of the platform near its physical limits. Full-track simulations were carried out and performance indicators were defined to objectively compare the response of the proposed algorithm with classical washout filter and linear MPC-based algorithms. The results indicate a better reference tracking with lower root mean square error and higher shape correlation for the proposed algorithm. Lastly, the effect of the adaptive weights based tuning was also observed in the form of smoother actuator movements and better workspace utilization
