    Tournament-stable equilibria

    No full text
Building on Arad and Rubinstein (2013), we introduce tournaments as simultaneous n-player games based on an m-player game g. A player meets each group of m-1 opponents m! times to play g in alternating roles. The winner of the tournament is the player who attains the highest accumulated score. We explore the relationship between the equilibria of the tournament and the equilibria of the game g and confirm that tournaments provide a refinement criterion. We compare it with standard refinements in the literature and show that it is satisfied by strict equilibria. We use our tournament model to study a selection of relevant economic applications, including risk-taking behavior

An integrated operational system to reduce O&M cost of offshore wind farms

    No full text
Offshore wind is a relatively new industry and it is generally more expensive to generate electricity than many alternative renewable sources. Operation & Maintenance (O&M) makes up a significant part of the overall cost of running Offshore Wind Turbines (OWT). Since the O&M associated responsibility is shared among turbine manufacturers, wind farm operators and the offshore transmission owners, this has inevitably led to lack of information, duplication of effort and less efficiency. Big data analytics is one great technique that will drive future growth. In this paper, an integrated operational system of offshore wind farm is proposed deploying big data analytics. Firstly, the current state of the O&M of offshore wind farm and the big data analytics are introduced. Afterwards, a predictive maintenance model and a maintenance implementation model are proposed, and an integrated operational system is developed incorporating those two models in order to optimize maintenance planning and implementation. Finally, the possible contribution of such a system to a more effective O&M of offshore wind farm is discussed.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Transport Engineering and Logistic

Texas Movers - Migration and Income Along the Border

    No full text
EconomicGrowth_Development_TechnicalChangeNot only are Texas residents among the most mobile in the nation, but over a million Texans move from one county to another within the state. This brings important questions to the table regarding urban, education, healthcare, and security policy planning at the local and state level. In this report, author Carlos Navarro analyses the major migration links for outflows and inflows of households and individuals who live along the Texas-Mexico border, with special attention placed on the Rio Grande Valley and the El Paso commuting zones. A comparison of the average income of movers relative to non-movers is also presented

Culture, Constructivism, and Media: Designing a Module on Carlos Slim

    No full text
Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helú has been a fixture on Forbes’s list of billionaires since 1991, and for the past three years, he has topped the magazine’s list of the world’s richest men. Although he is exceptionally well-known in his native Mexico, the majority of American college students have never heard of Carlos Slim. This article presents a curricular module built around this charismatic and controversial figure. The module requires students to navigate Internet-supported news media in the target language (Spanish), and engages them in independent, small-group, and larger, teacher-led activities designed to foster critical and comparative skills in cultural competency and analysis through process-based, student-led inquiry. Pedagogically and methodologically, the author engages with the recommendations and conclusions of recent studies by ACTFL and MLA committees, as well as by other leading scholars, regarding both the use of technology in the classroom and the idea of “teaching culture.” The unit’s content significantly deepens and enriches students’ understanding of social, economic, and political issues in modern Mexico. The article carefully situates each stage and aspect of the curricular unit presented in relation to recent studies of constructivism in foreign language acquisition and on the hierarchy of Bloom’s taxonomy of learning objectives

Los hombres no mandan aqui: Narrating Immigrant Genders and Sexualities in New York

    No full text
Allusions to the autonomy and power some women acquired in immigrant communities surfaced frequently in our research with Latin American immigrants living in urban, suburban, and semirural locations in or near New York City.1 In informal exchanges, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, many women and men from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico described changes in gender roles and expectations favorable to women. This is consistent with the existing literature.2 However, the various meanings given to the words libertad and liberal (liberty/freedom/free/independence) referring to women’s reported ability to mandar (order/command) their male partners and men’s sumisión (submission) to women’s control should not be taken literally. The multiple meanings of these words illuminate existing and emerging contradictions in the politics of gender and sexuality in immigrant communities. Our analysis examines the ways immigrants narrate their experiences of the changing location of women’s and men’s labor, domestic violence, and the control of immigrant women’s bodies. This analysis draws from the NIH-R01 research titled New Hispanic Communities and HIV Risk (M. Shedlin, principal investigator).Published in Social Text, copyright Duke University PressPeer reviewe
