Symbol of Game in Karuna Riazi’s The Gauntlet

    No full text
The Gauntlet by Karuna Riazi is a middle-grade novel that tells a story of a board game that lured children into their world and trapped them inside for the personal gain of the Architect of the game. Farah and her friends were determined to help her brother escape and go back into their world. In order to do so, they were forced to win several games that the Architect presented to them; otherwise, they would be imprisoned inside the game forever. By applying Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotics theory, this study aims to reveal how the challenges Farah and her friends must face in the story work as a medium for the author to present ideas of control and liberation through the metaphor of a board game. This research  is conducted  through  descriptive  methodology,  and the data  is collected from the novel by finding relevant narratives and dialogues to explore how the game functions as a symbol for control and liberation

Background: In this study was to know the incidence of primary Caesarean section in multigravidas, its indications among these patients. Methods: Prospective observational study. All deliveries at Late Baliram Kashyap Memorial Hospital and Govt Medical college Jagdalpur, Bastar, Chhattisgarh, India. 8729 deliveries during the period of 2 year from January 2022 to December 2023. Multigravida women admitted to hospital with pregnancy of >28 weeks gestation (gravida 2 and above), each of whom has had a previous vaginal delivery of >28 weeks gestation were included. Women with previous abortions and previous section were excluded. Indication of caesarean section, obstetric history, antenatal history. Results: A total of 8729 deliveries were conducted in the institute Lt shri BRKM Govt Medical College Jagdalpur Chhattisgarh among which 2709 (31%) were caesarean sections and 6015 (68.9%) were conducted vaginally. Total number of primary CS in multiparous women were 642 about 23.6% of the total CS rate. The mean age is 26±4 years ranged from 18 – 40 years. Most of the patients were in the age group of 26-30 years (45.01%) followed by 21-25 years (26.01%) Out of 642 primary cs in multipara, 316 (50.6%) cases underwent emergency CS whereas rest 326 went elective CS. Maternal and fetal indications contributed 21% and 79%. Conclusions: Many unforeseen complications occur in women who previously had a normal vaginal delivery. With this study we came to the conclusion that fetal distress is the major contributor of primary CS in multigravida. Thus, preventive measures should be taken to decrease the fetal distress and non-progress of labour

Rudimentary horn pregnancies: dilemmas in diagnosis

    Get PDF
Rudimentary horn pregnancy is a rare obstetric entity and the diagnosis and management may pose some problems especially in a low-resource center. We report a case of G1P0 with pregnancy of 28 weeks gestation with diagnosed intrauterine fetal death, which was suspected as extra uterine pregnancy bases on failed attempts of termination of pregnancy and on laparotomy, a dead fetus of 16 weeks was found in left unruptured noncommunicating horn of unicornuate uterus. Diagnosis of rudimentary horn pregnancy is difficult and can be missed in ultrasound. It requires a high index of suspicion. </jats:p

An important component in learning and learning activities is the educator, or teacher. Teachers play a very important role because they function as mentors who deliver and transfer teaching materials in the form of knowledge. The teacher also determines the success of the students related to the teaching and learning process. It is required that teachers improve quality and professionalism. One of its competencies is pedagogic competence, which is the ability of teachers to manage student learning, which includes understanding insights or educational foundations, understanding of students, developing curriculum or a syllabus, learning design, implementing educational and dialogical learning, utilizing learning technology, and evaluating learning outcomes. Not all Nava Dhammasekha teachers have a background in early childhood education. Based on this background, the author was encouraged to do service to the Nava Dhammasekha Karuna school, Teluk Naga Tangerang. This community service activity is intended to provide training and coaching aimed at helping teachers improve their pedagogical competence

Local and Global Peacebuilding: A Case Study of the Training Program Peace Leadership for Rwandan Women by Karuna Center for Peacebuilding

    No full text
The purpose of this Capstone is to investigate effective components of a training program Peace Leadership for Rwandan Women implemented by a US-based non-profit organization, the Karuna Center for Peacebuilding, Inc. (KCP) from February 2004 to January 2006. This study integrates lessons learned from my practicum work at KCP in the academic and professional field of conflict transformation and peacebuilding. Part I states a research question and some sub questions. Part II reviews studies on the genocide in Rwanda. Part III shows how this paper relies on qualitative research using the Critical Social Research Approach and employs a case study, as well as details about how data was gathered for this evaluation. Part IV presents data collected on the trip to Rwanda, including the following interviews and observations that the author made as an assistant staff member of KCP. Part V analyzes the data under the research sub questions and theoretical frames in the literature reviewed. In conclusion, Part III illustrates that the most effective components of the KCP’s two-year peace leadership training program for Rwandan women are KCP’s focus on intercommunal trust building and its respect for Rwandan women’s ownership of their peacebuilding approaches. These essential principles of peacebuilding methodologies contribute not only to local peacebuilding in Rwanda but also to regional and global peacebuilding

Bioinformatic analysis of chlamydia trachomatis polymorphic membrane proteins PmpE, PmpF, PmpG and PmpH as potential vaccine antigens

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most important infectious cause of infertility in women with important implications in public health and for which a vaccine is urgently needed. Recent immunoproteomic vaccine studies found that four polymorphic membrane proteins (PmpE, PmpF, PmpG and PmpH) are immunodominant, recognized by various MHC class II haplotypes and protective in mouse models. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate genetic and protein features of Pmps (focusing on the N-terminal 600 amino acids where MHC class II epitopes were mapped) in order to understand antigen variation that may emerge following vaccine induced immune selection. We used several bioinformatics platforms to study: i) Pmps’ phylogeny and genetic polymorphism; ii) the location and distribution of protein features (GGA(I, L)/FxxN motifs and cysteine residues) that may impact pathogen-host interactions and protein conformation; and iii) the existence of phase variation mechanisms that may impact Pmps’ expression. We used a well-characterized collection of 53 fully-sequenced strains that represent the C. trachomatis serovars associated with the three disease groups: ocular (N=8), epithelial-genital (N=25) and lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) (N=20). We observed that PmpF and PmpE are highly polymorphic between LGV and epithelial-genital strains, and also within populations of the latter. We also found heterogeneous representation among strains for GGA(I, L)/FxxN motifs and cysteine residues, suggesting possible alterations in adhesion properties, tissue specificity and immunogenicity. PmpG and, to a lesser extent, PmpH revealed low polymorphism and high conservation of protein features among the genital strains (including the LGV group). Uniquely among the four Pmps, pmpG has regulatory sequences suggestive of phase variation. In aggregate, the results suggest that PmpG may be the lead vaccine candidate because of sequence conservation but may need to be paired with another protective antigen (like PmpH) in order to prevent immune selection of phase variants.Peer reviewedFinal article publishe

Identity Crisis in Shobha De’s Socialite Evenings

    Get PDF
Shobha De’s Socialite Evenings is a critical exploration of the lives of the urban elite in Mumbai, highlighting the superficiality, materialism, and emotional emptiness that define their existence. Through the protagonist, Karuna, the author delves into the shallow pursuit of wealth, beauty, and social status, exposing the contradictions of a glamorous world that praises appearance over authenticity. The novel critiques the alienation and emotional isolation experienced by the people in the society. In a world dominated by power dynamics, manipulation, and betrayal Karuna\u27s journey reflects the internal conflict between personal desires and societal expectations. Ultimately, Socialite Evenings raises questions about the cost of pursuing external success and the true nature of happiness, suggesting that material wealth and social prestige cannot provide lasting fulfilment

B cell presentation of chlamydia antigen selects out protective CD4γ13 T cells : implications for genital tract tissue-resident memory lymphocyte clusters

    No full text
Surveillance and defense of the enormous mucosal interface with the nonsterile world are critical to protecting the host from a wide range of pathogens. Chlamydia trachomatis is an intracellular bacterial pathogen that replicates almost exclusively in the epithelium of the reproductive tract. The fallopian tubes and vagina are poorly suited to surveillance and defense, with limited immune infrastructure positioned near the epithelium. However, a dynamic process during clearing primary infections leaves behind new lymphoid clusters immediately beneath the epithelium. These memory lymphocyte clusters (MLCs) harboring tissue-resident memory (Trm) T cells are presumed to play an important role in protection from subsequent infections. Histologically, human Chlamydia MLCs have prominent B cell populations. We investigated the status of genital tract B cells during C. muridarum infections and the nature of T cells recovered from immune mice using immune B cells as antigen-presenting cells (APCs). These studies revealed a genital tract plasma B cell population and a novel genital tract CD4 T cell subset producing both gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and interleukin-13 (IL-13). A panel of CD4 T cell clones and microarray analysis showed that the molecular fingerprint of CD4γ13 T cells includes a Trm-like transcriptome. Adoptive transfer of a Chlamydia-specific CD4γ13 T cell clone completely prevented oviduct immunopathology without accelerating bacterial clearance. Existence of a CD4γ13 T cell subset provides a plausible explanation for the observation that human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) Chlamydia-specific IFN-γ and IL-13 responses predict resistance to reinfection.Peer reviewedFinal article publishedChlamydiaCD4IL-13B cellsTr
