This book on Professor Samir Amin retraces his family origins, intellectual itinerary, political struggles as well as his experience in economic policy formulation in Egypt, Mali and many other countries. The fundamentals which shaped Samir Amin's thinking, directed his life-long work and influenced his action spawned from his early discovery in high school of Marxism and Historical Materialism, used as a scientific analysis of the history of human societies. This book also highlights Samir Amin's invaluable contribution to the struggle against capitalism through his indefatigable fight to deconstruct the concepts that are used to disguise the true face of historical capitalism, which is nothing but an unabashed pursuit for accumulation and dispossession of dominated countries and peoples. Through a series of interviews with Samir Amin, the author unravels the poignant and great ideas which have been at the heart of his intellectual and political fight for the last half century. The author also provides a selection of texts which includes an exhaustive bibliography, with all published writings of Samir Amin in French. This rich work is meant for a large readership - students, researchers, teachers, political leaders and citizens who are interested in the phenomenon of globalisation and its impact on the so-called 'under-developed countries

Computer-aided environmental and technoeconomic analyses as tools for designing biorefineries under the circular bioeconomy approach
Nowadays, there is a keen awareness of studying new ways to achieve resource-efficient transforming biosources and renewable materials. Biomass is expected to serve as a platform for producing several chemical components while meeting economic, environmental, and technical targets. As a result, the circular bioeconomy has emerged to integrate minimization of environmental impacts, biomass valorization, and multiproduct generation through computer-aided and modeling tools. This chapter presents environmental and technoeconomic analyses of a multifeedstock biorefinery to produce ethanol and succinic acid from lignocellulosic biomass. The plant was designed to process 68,500 t/year of empty banana fruit bunches and 275,470 t/year of yucca residues (including stems and peels). The system was modeled through Aspen Plus software. The feedstock flow was set based on reported data and the availability of these materials in Northern Colombia. Environmental impacts were estimated using the Waste Reduction Algorithm. The economic analysis included estimating financial indicators such as net present value, discounted payback period, and economic potentials. This was accompanied by the calculation of capital expenditures and operational expenditures. The results revealed that this biorefinery represents a promising alternative for the growth of the agroindustry productive chain in Northern Colombia under the circular bioeconomy principles since both economic and environmental showed promising outcomes.</p

Managing today's news media : audience first /
The business of journalism is in the midst of massive change. Managing Today's News Media: Audience First offers practical solutions on how to cope with and adapt to the evolving media landscape. News media experts Samir Husni, Debora Halpern Wenger, and Hank Price introduce a forward-looking framework for understanding why change is occurring and what it means to the business of journalism. Central to this new paradigm is a focus on the audience. The authors introduce "The 4Cs Strategy" to describe how customers, control, choice, and change are all part of a strategy for successful media organizations. Every chapter in the book relates to one or more of these four key principles: * Customer - Each platform must offer a unique experience to the customer. ...Includes bibliographical references (pages 203-210) and index. The business of journalism is in the midst of massive change. Environmental Assessment of Large Scale Production of Magnetite (Fe3O4) Nanoparticles via Coprecipitation
Nanoparticles are materials with special properties that can be applied in different fields, such as medicine, engineering, food industry and cosmetics. The contributions regarding the synthesis of different types of nanoparticles have allowed researchers to determine a special group of nanoparticles with key characteristics for several applications. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4) have attracted a significant amount of attention due to their ability to improve the properties of polymeric materials. For this reason, the development of novel/emerging large scale processes for the synthesis of nanomaterials is a great and important challenge. In this work, an environmental assessment of the large scale production of magnetite via coprecipitation was carried out with the aim to evaluate its potential impact on the environment at a processing capacity of 806.87 t/year of magnetite nanoparticles. The assessment was performed using a computer-aided tool based on the Waste Reduction Algorithm (WAR). This method allows us to quantify the impacts generated and classify them into eight different categories. The process does not generate any negative impacts that could harm the environment. This assessment allowed us to identify the applicability of the large scale production of magnetite nanoparticles from an environmental viewpoint
In this seminar we present the theory of the disconnection/dislinking of Samir Amin and show its explanatory capacity in the analysis applied to the governments of Juan Domingo Perón (1946-1955) and those of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández (2003-2015). Samir Amin provides a valuable theoretical framework for understanding the functioning of the global capitalist system based on his theory of the five monopolies in dispute: natural resources, financial resources, scientific and technical research, weapons of mass destruction and media. According to the author, strategic control over these resources allows the central countries, through their transnational corporations, to seize the economic surpluses of the weakest countries through the generation of a global price system. The disconnection/dislinking implies in economic terms the attempt to generate in the disconnected countries and regions, internal price systems different from the global ones, in such a way that a different mode of accumulation of wealth is generated. This means recovering the use of state regulation instruments and the possibility of distributing the economic surplus contemplating the integration of the social fabric.
