    No full text
The article offers a review of the economic literature on the effects of corporatization, i.e. the transformation of public enterprises into limited liability companies. The consequences of corporatization on business performance is still a relevant topic of research, considering the intentions of some Italian Municipal Administrations to transform the juridical form of firms active in the water service, currently in the limited liability form, back into “Azienda Speciale”, a public firm whose management enjoys a certain control over the firm’s strategy. The economic theory suggests that the achievement of objectives compatible with the public utilities’ mission is linked not only to the definition of an appropriate legal form but also to the introduction of appropriate governance mechanisms, in accordance with criteria of efficiency and effectiveness. The empirical evidence shows that, in various sectors, corporatiza- tion has a positive effect on business performance, in terms of efficiency, productivity and profitability

Almost-invisible firms and the economic crisis: An exploratory analysis and a research agenda

    No full text
The paper provides an explorative analysis of the performance of 1262 self-employed and non- listed micro, small and medium firms adhering to an entrepreneurial association (“Confartigianato Imprese”) in the Eastern Piedmont region, in Italy, on the basis of a manually compiled dataset of economic and organizational data referred to the period before and during the COVID-19 economic turmoil, from 2018 to 2020. Since information on these organizations is scant and rare, the results of the paper, although preliminary, shed light on firms that would be “otherwise invisible” to researchers, market analysts and institutions. The paper suggests a research agenda for contributing to uncover the features and the potential for growth of these firms, which represent the backbone of the economy but constantly face sustainability threats. In addition, the paper aims at encouraging improvements in the performance measurement of firms with minimum and differentiated reporting obligations, which nevertheless share the common characteristics of having small size, uncertain growth opportunity, local or limited reach

The determinants of football attendance: new evidence from Italy and future lines of research.

    No full text
This paper investigates the determinants of football attendance on the basis of a unique data set of all fixtures of Italian “Serie A” from season 2004/2005 to season 2010/2011, including a comprehensive list of sport, economic and socio-demographic variables. The paper provides important insights to sport and city managers in order to enhance the demand for football. Results indicate that the degree of competition between teams and the quality of players are important factors of attraction. The introduction of anti-violence measures also affects attendance but differently for committed and uncommitted fans. Moreover, the increase in attendance brought by the World Cup victory in 2006 is more than offset by the decrease induced by the “Calciopoli” scandal

    No full text
This paper analyses the effects of corporatization, mixed ownership and board composition on the behaviour and performance of a sample of 114 Italian local public utilities, for which information about 1,630 directors during 1994-2004 has been collected. Our main findings indicate that, while the corporatization process and the presence of private investors are positively correlated with profitability, the presence of politically connected directors, who dominate boards of directors in the Italian public utilities in the period under investigation, exerts a negative impact on performance

Political connections in boards of directors

    No full text
Politically connected directors dominate board of directors of state-owned enterprises as the public owner’s representatives. Their political influence affects board organization and performance. We propose a framework to analyze the topic with reference to firms in network industries, which are still dominated by state shareholders

Spatial Competition in the Italian Retail Grocery Sector: An Exploratory Analysis

    No full text
The evolution of the retail grocery industry is characterized by the progressive concentration of retailers and the dominance of several large chains. Despite this movement toward fewer but larger outlets, many single store enterprises and small chains continue to survive. In Italy, the concentration in the grocery sector is lower than in most European countries, small retail stores coexist with bigger chains and supermarkets are unevenly distributed over the territory. This paper aims at exploring the determinants of prices at retail grocery stores located within a Province in the North of Italy. The analysis highlights that the presence of competitors within a 10 km radius has a negative effect on the supermarkets' prices. The presence of small retailers also has a negative effect on prices. Finally, there are scale economies at a commercial signs level: the four most important distribution chains in Italy show lower prices than less important chains
