Oltre il recinto di fabbrica. Stratificazioni, significati, conservazione e riuso

    No full text
The conservation and reuse of disused industrial complexes inevitably requires a multi-scalar reading of the stratifications present in these places rich in stories to tell. This is the case of the Bossi textile mill at Cameri near Novara, built in the early 20th century and closed down in 2013. This industrial site articulated as numerous buildings that recount the evolution of textile production, an excellence on an international level in the production of loom-woven and printed fabrics, with the innovative involvement of artists and designers. The Bossi factory was also a privileged place for the youthful Vittorio Gregotti, who at various times designed extensions to the factory. Since the closure of the business, with the progressive dismantling of the equipment and the sale of some buildings, the complex risks being dismembered and demolished. This contribution offers a reflection on the instruments and strategies currently adopted for the definition of the future of this site

The MIVAR building at Abbiategrasso, located in Alzaiza Naviglio di Bereguardo, was designed to produce one million televisions per year through a design totally focused on work quality and productivity through the optimization of workers’ activities. The building was never active, nevertheless it remains a great example of design in which the vision of the owner was translated into an ideal industrial building. All prefabricated elements have been modified following the specific requests by Mr Vichi who asked for the maximum integration between structures and technical installations, both for heating, ventilation, lighting, fire prevention, etc. Under the ground floor of the industrial building a technical basement of the same surface was built to optimize the productive process to avoid any conflict with production at the upper floo

Nuova vita al Consorzio Agrario di Piacenza. Progetto di rigenerazione urbana New life for the Consorzio Agrario of Piacenza. Urban regeneration project

The historical origin of the Agricultural Consortiums can be traced back to the Monti frumentari. However, it was with the formation of the modern national unitary State that the Governments placed at the center of attention the improvement of agriculture, which resulted in the adoption of industrial operating models and a cooperative type of organization. The Agricultural Consortiums, the fulcrum of agricultural activities in the various Italian territories, prospered and occupied areas where the architectural, productive, economic and social culture made its way. Works will be realized mainly for the production and the storage, that will give job to entire generations. Over time, those same areas will come to terms with under-use, abandonment, degradation and, for some, regeneration. Paradigmatic, in this logic, the path undertaken by the Provincial Agricultural Consortium of Piacenza to encourage the ferrying of the industrial area of society towards its total regeneration

Defect characterization in silicon particle detectors irradiated with Li ions

High Energy Physics experiments at future very high luminosity colliders will require ultra radiation-hard silicon detectors that can withstand fast hadron fluences up to 10^(16) cm^(-2). In order to test the detectors radiation hardness in this fluence range, long irradiation times are required at the currently available proton irradiation facilities. Energetic (58 MeV) Lithium (Li) ions, with experimental hardness factor about two orders of magnitude higher than 24 GeV protons for 280-300 μm thick detectors, could represent a promising alternative radiation source. In this study, the degradation mechanisms in single pad p+-n Standard Float Zone (STFZ) and Diffusion Oxygenated Float Zone (DOFZ) Si detectors irradiated with Li ions up to the fluence of 2.9×10^(12) Li/cm^(2) have been investigated by means of Photo Induced Current Transient Spectroscopy and Thermally Stimulated Currents. Results are compared with the radiation damage induced by 24 GeV proton, 1 MeV neutron and 60Co γ-ray irradiation. The critical Li ion fluence for cluster formation is found to be in the range 4.1-21×10^(11) Li/cm^(2) and its correlation to the corresponding value for hadrons is discussed

Quality aware approximate memory in RISC-V Linux Kernel

    No full text
Improving power consumption and performance of error tolerant applications is the target of the design paradigm known as approximate computing. The memory subsystem is one of the units of a computational architecture where approximations can be introduced, leveraging on the resilience of an application to maintain an acceptable output quality even if its input data are subject to imprecision and errors. This paper proposes and implements the management, in the Linux kernel, of multiple approximate memory banks. Applications can then allocate approximate memory for their data structures selecting between different levels of approximation, depending on the requirements on output quality. This allows to design an architecture where approximate physical memory, instead of being composed of a unit intercepting a single point in the energy-quality tradeoff curve, can be split into multiple banks trading off levels of approximation and energy savings. We finally show a case study in the results, where we explore the allocation of different data structures of a signal processing application, depending on sensitivity to errors and desired output quality

Human platelets bind and degrade 2-arachidonoylglycerol, which activates these cells through a cannabinoid receptor

    No full text
The endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-Delta (4)AchGro) activates human platelets in platelet-rich plasma at physiological concentrations. The activation was inhibited by selective antagonists of CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, but not by acetylsalicylic acid. Human platelets can metabolize 2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro by internalization through a high affinity transporter (K-m = 300 +/- 30 nM, V-max = 10 +/- 1 pmol.min(-1).mg protein(-1)), followed by hydrolysis by a fatty acid amide hydrolase (K-m = 8 +/- 1 muM, V-max = 400 +/- 50 pmol.min(-1).mg protein(-1)). The anandamide transport inhibitor AM404, and anandamide itself, were ineffective on 2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro uptake by platelets, whereas anandamide competitively inhibited 2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro hydrolysis (inhibition constant = 10 +/- 1 muM). Platelet activation by 2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro was paralleled by an increase of intracellular calcium and inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate, and by a decrease of cyclic AMP. Moreover, treatment of preloaded platelet-rich plasma with 2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro induced an approximately threefold increase in [H-3]2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro release, according to a CB receptor-dependent mechanism. On the other hand, ADP and collagen counteracted the activation of platelets by 2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro, whereas 5-hydroxy tryptamine (serotonin) enhanced and extended its effects. Remarkably, ADP and collagen also reduced [H-3]2-Delta (4)AchGro release from 2-Delta (4)Ach-Gro-activated platelets, whereas 5-hydroxytryptamine further increased it. These findings suggest a so far unnoticed interplay between the peripheral endocannabinoid system and physiological platelet agonists
