Characterization of Admissible Marking Sets in Petri Nets with Uncontrollable Transitions

    No full text
This work studies the equivalent transformation from a legal marking set to its admissible marking set. First, the concepts of escaping-marking set and transforming marking set are defined, and two algorithms are provided to compute the transforming marking set and the admissible marking set. Second, the equivalent transformation of a disjunction of linear constraints expressed in terms of generalized mutual exclusion constraints (GMECs) with non-negative weights via uncontrollable transitions is established

Opportunistic cyberphysical services: A novel paradigm for the future Internet of Things

    No full text
Services have a paramount importance for unfolding the potential of the future Internet of Things (IoT), a dense, open, cyberphysical ecosystem in which humans, conventional computing systems and daily objects straightforwardly interoperate. By summarizing our previous contributions in such novel research context, this paper promotes our vision of “Opportunistic IoT Services” and a full-fledged approach to their modeling according to their opportunistic properties. Its effectiveness and flexibility is illustrated by means of two case studies, related to the Industrial IoT and Smart City scenarios

Complete solo piano works of Zhou Long

    No full text
Access to thesis restricted until 07/2023.Zhou Long is a contemporary composer of Chinese American descent, who belongs to a generation of Chinese composers that began introducing traditional Chinese music to western audiences. He gained international recognition after receiving the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for his opera, Madame White Snake (2011). Very few performances, recordings, and publications currently exist on Zhou’s piano music, and this doctoral lecture recital is the first time an artist has performed the complete collection of Zhou’s solo piano pieces. The pieces include: Mongolian Folk- Tune Variations, Wu Kui, Pianogongs, and Pianobells. In his piano music, Zhou makes use of unconventional extended piano techniques, imitates and evokes Chinese traditional instruments, and likes to make connections with other art genres. Also, the prominence of percussive elements in Zhou’s music is of a great importance. In this lecture recital, the author has mainly focused on 1) the background information of Zhou Long and his solo piano works; 2) the influence of Chinese traditional instruments, ancient literatures and aesthetic concepts, in addition to folk elements on his piano music; 3) how the composer combined those elements with western music and compositional skills; and 4) the exploration of the percussive usage of the piano along with various sound effect. Much of the discussion were from the author’s own observations; it also include insights from an interview the author conducted with the composer. Through the combined presentation of the lecture and performance of Zhou Long’s four piano pieces, the author intended to help bring exposure to his piano works, and to serve as a guide for piano students and teachers interested in exploring Zhou’s piano music.Thesis (D.A.

Service Computing for Design and Reconfiguration of Intgrated E-Supply Chains

    No full text
This chapter proposes a three-level decision-support system (DSS) for integrated e-supply-chains (IESCs) network design and reconfiguration based on data and information that can be obtained via Internet- and Web-based computing tools. The IESC is described as a set of consecutive stages connected by communication and transportation links, and the design and reconfiguration aim of the DSS consists of selecting the partners of the stages on the basis of transportation connections and information flows. More precisely, the first DSS level evaluates the performance of all the IESC candidates and singles out the best ones. The second DSS level solves a multicriteria integer linear optimization problem to configure the network. Finally, the third DSS level is devoted to evaluating and validating the solution proposed in the first two modules. The chapter proposes the use of some optimization techniques to synthesize the first two levels and illustrates the decision process by way of a case study.</jats:p

Application of particle swarm optimization in adaptive self-interference cancellation

    No full text
This thesis investigates the application of particle swarm optimization in self-interference cancellation. To achieve cancellation, the receiver has to differentiate between the transmit and receive signal. The transmit signal is already known at the transmitting side but it undergoes some distortion before it reaches the receiving end. An adaptive filter proves to be useful in estimating the distortion, but its weight remains an unknown factor. This thesis uses the particle swarm optimization algorithm to dynamically adjust the weights of the filter.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2022-08-01The student, Jingchao Zhou, accepted the attached license on 2020-07-07 at 14:08.The student, Jingchao Zhou, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-07-07 at 14:14.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-07-07 at 17:20.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15513 on 2020-10-02 at 15:31:36Made available in DSpace on 2020-10-07T22:44:25Z (GMT). Modeling opportunistic IoT services in open IoT ecosystems

    No full text
Internet of Thing (IoT) is transforming our physical world into a giant information system, daily providing novel, advanced, cyberphysical services. Differently from conventional computing services (e.g., web-services, and ubiquitous services) that are usually loosely impacted by contextawareness, co-location or transience, Internet of Things (IoT) services require to actually consider the overall spatio-temporal context of the heterogeneous entities involved in the service provisioning. This paper proposes a novel and full-fledged approach to IoT service modeling, aiming to fully support IoT service development according to opportunistic properties

Granular models as networks of associations of information granules: A development scheme via augmented principle of justifiable granularity

    No full text
This study proposes an approach to the construction of granular models directly based on information granules expressed both in input and output spaces. Associating these information granules, the con- structed granular models come in the framework of three layers networks: input granules, an inference scheme and output granules. The proposed approach consists of two stages. First, an augmented principle of justifiable granularity is proposed and applied to construct information granules in an input space. This principle constructs information granules not only through establishing a sound balance between two criteria, i.e., coverage and specificity, but also by optimizing those information granules on the basis of their homogeneity assessed with respect to data localized in output space. At the second stage, we propose an inference scheme by analyzing a location of an input datum in relation with the already formed information granules in an input space. The computed relation can be quantified as membership grades, thus yielding aggregation results involving information granules in an output space. The performance of the proposed granular model is supported by the mechanisms of granular computing and the principle of justifiable granularity. Experimental studies concerning synthetic and publicly available data are performed and some comparative analysis involving rule-based models is given
