Prisoners’ gang-related activity: the importance of bullying and moral disengagement
No full textGang-related activity can have a significant impact on the effective management of prisons in the UK, yet little is known about the characteristics of the prisoners involved. I it this study, 141 adult male prisoners' gang-related activity was examined in relation to their bullying behaviour and use of moral disengagement. Results showed that prisoners most involved in gang-related activity were likely to have spent a longer total time in the prison system, be perpetrators of bullying and have high levels of moral disengagement. Findings also show that moral disengagement partially mediates the relationship between bullying and gang-related activity Implications for treatment programmes and the prison estate are discussed
Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer
No full textThis thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title

Gangster Girlfriends in British Columbia: The Allure of Louboutin, Chanel, and Tiffany
No full textAccording to Peterson (2014) female members may account for as much as 40% of the gang membership in the United States, and yet we still know so little about the female role, membership, association to, and relationships with known gang members. Indeed, Decker (2017: xvii) has noted that “In too many studies of organized crime groups, women are either not dealt with or are treated as appendages.” Our research goes some way to correcting this, adding to the body of evidence by understanding the decision for involvement with gangs, as non-gang members. The main objective was to explore the romantic relationships between females and gang members. The research examines why young females, who do not identify as gang members, enter relationships with gang members and what the nature of these relationships are. In doing so, the research is able to offer a number of recommendations for intervention, which may be effective at deterring gang involvement, and supporting ‘exit strategies’ of young women involved with gang members. The data used to recommend intervention and prevention strategies was produced from qualitative interviews with three women from British Columbia who have previously been in a relationship with a gang member. The results contribute to the ongoing debate about whether females become involved with gangs because they are victims or through conscious decision. A rational choice. The present study argues that women need to be viewed as active decision makers in their own lives, while still acknowledging that dating a gang member is a dangerous and abusive experience. The research also finds support for the glamorization of gangs and suggests that this is an integral factor in entering a relationship with a gang member. This study argues that prevention and intervention methods that aim to de-glamourize gangs are needed to deter young women from entering these relationships.Peer reviewe
What's the gang wearing?: An exploratory and descriptive analysis of police gang uniforms
No full textPrevious studies on police uniforms have found uniform color and style continue to evolve as do the dynamics around police uniforms and citizen impression. Given no research has been done specifically on police gang unit uniforms, this study was exploratory and aimed to determine if there was a visual standard regarding the operational appearance of police gang unit uniforms in Canada and the United States. Using targeted and purposive sampling the researcher collected 64 samples of digital images containing police gang unit officers in uniform for content analysis. The analyzed data yielded quantitative statistics that were applied to the primary research question. These statistics found that police gang unit officers in Canada and the United States are most likely to deploy in a unit-specific police uniform, that is black in color, visually identifies as a gang unit (by patch or crest), and be wearing external body armor that is black in color. The researcher suggests the study’s findings be applied to further research to determine the potential implications police gang crime unit uniforms may have on citizen impression. The author discusses the background, education level, and describes workday situations that occurred during the period the group was employed. Collected during the Japanese American Evacuation and Resettlement Study (JERS).The Robert Billigmeier collection is comprised of materials collected during his work and stay at the Tule Lake incarceration camp conducting research for the University of California’s Japanese Evacuation and Resettlement Study (JERS). The collection includes: photographs taken during his time at Tule Lake; a scrapbook created by students at Tule Lake in 1942; camp publications; reports and manuscripts; and student writings. Several of the reports and manuscripts draw from the personality cards written by students in the Tule Lake incarceration camp

Effects of City Layout in Gang Territorial Formations
No full textGang-related violence poses a significant challenge in numerous countries across the world. While previous research have explored modeling formation of gang territories, none of them incorporated a city layout such as roads, water bodies and parks while doing so. Hence, this research explores the effects of city layout in the formation of gang territories. First the effects of a single vertical boundary of varying permeability is observed. Following this, the model is applied to real world where a part of Chicago's city layout is incorporated to the model. The results are then compared to gang territory maps shared by Chicago Police Department. The experiments show that city layout significantly affects the shape and size of the territories. By fine tuning the permeability for different terrain features, we can observe that the territories produced by the model show resemblance to their real world counterparts.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin
