No full text"Amada Cardenas, a Mexican American woman from the borderlands of South Texas, played a pivotal role in the little-known history of the peyote trade. She and her husband were the first federally licensed peyote dealers. They began harvesting and selling the sacramental plant to followers of the Native American Church (NAC) in the 1930s, and after her husband's death in the late 1960s Mrs. Cardenas continued to befriend and help generations of NAC members until her death in 2005, just short of her 101st birthday. Author Stacy B. Schaefer, a close friend of Amada, spent thirteen years doing fieldwork with this remarkable woman. Her book weaves together the geography, biology, history, cultures, and religions that created the unique life of Mrs. Cardenas and the people she knew. Schaefer includes their words to help tell the story of how Mexican Americans, Tejanos, gringos, Native Americans, and others were touched and inspired by Amada Cardenas's embodiment of the core NAC values: faith, hope, love, and charity"..
Theology in suspense : how the detective fiction of P.D. James provokes theological thought

provokes her readers to think theologically. I present evidence from the body of
James’s work, including her detective fiction that features the Detective Adam
Dalgliesh, as well as her other novels, autobiography, and non-fiction work. I also
present a brief history of detective fiction. This history provides the reader with a
better understanding of how P.D James is influenced by the detective genre as well as
how she stands apart from the genre’s traditions.
This dissertation relies on an interview that I conducted with P.D. James in
November, 2008. During the interview, I asked James how Christianity has
influenced her detective fiction and her responses greatly contribute to this
dissertation. However, James’s novels should be interpreted and explored in the
manner that they are received by the reader. How the reader receives and responds to
the novels, not only how James writes the novels, is what causes her stories to
provoke theological thinking.
By examining Christian symbolism that is present in setting, character, the
Detective Adam Dalgliesh, and plot, this dissertation seeks to assert that James
contributes to a theological conversation through her popular detective fiction
Polyethylene Glycol 3350 in the Treatment of Chronic Idiopathic Constipation: Post hoc Analysis Using FDA Endpoints
No full textMETHODS: This multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial included adults with chronic idiopathic constipation randomized to polyethylene glycol 3350 17 g (n = 204) or placebo (n = 100) once daily for 24 weeks. Post hoc analyses were performed using the US Food and Drug Administration endpoint (≥3 complete spontaneous bowel movements/week and an increase of ≥1 complete spontaneous bowel movement/week from baseline for ≥9/12 weeks, including 3 of the last 4 weeks) along with additional efficacy and safety outcomes. RESULTS: The proportion of patients meeting the new endpoint was significantly higher with polyethylene glycol 3350 vs placebo (42% vs 13%; P < 0.0001). Reductions in the mean number of hard/lumpy stools/week (–2.1 vs –0.9; P = 0.0014) and the weekly mean five-point cramping rating (–0.3 vs –0.1; P = 0.0272) also significantly favored polyethylene glycol 3350. The proportion of subjects with gastrointestinal adverse events decreased markedly after the first week of treatment in the polyethylene glycol 3350 group. CONCLUSION: Using the current US Food and Drug Administration-recommended responder definition and other secondary outcomes, once-daily polyethylene glycol 3350 demonstrated substantial and sustained efficacy and safety over 24 weeks in patients with chronic idiopathic constipation.
