Fabrication of macroporous polysilicon by using nanosphere lithography
Nanosphere lithography (NSL) has been demonstrated to be a feasible, alternative technique for the fabrication of macroporous polysilicon. The diameter of the pore can be controlled by RIE of the fabricated nanospheres template using Ar/O gas mixtures at pressure of 5mTorr and rf power of 100W
Design and fabrication of passive mixing channels to be incorporated into a centrifugally driven microfluidic lab-on-a-disc
Recent advancement in microfluidic systems has been focused on the development of micro total analysis systems and Lab-on-a-chip systems for bio-analytical and clinical diagnostic applications, particularly for DNA analysis, clinical point-of-care analysis, proteomic analysis, immunoassays and forensic science. We propose to create a centrifugally driven CD-like microfluidic system based on silicon-glass technology. The CD-like device is being developed for high throughput bio-analysis of nanolitre volumes of sample
Fluidic control using superparamagnetic beads
The use of magnetic beads, for the control of fluid in micro channels is discussed here. The magnetic beads are used to form a plug-like plunger, to control fluid in a micro channel. A theoretical force and water flow rate exerted by the bead plug has been determined. Initial work has shown it is possible to move fluid in a micro channel with volume flow rate of up to 7.2µl/min and measurements have been made for the force which a bead lug can exert. The results suggest that this method of fluid control may have applications for a BioMEMS pipette
Detection of DNA-gold nanoparticle hybrids on patterned surfaces
An optical diffraction based sensor has been developed for the detection of DNA-gold nanoparticle hybrids. Silicon substrates were patterned with oligonucleotide sequences in the form of a one-dimensional diffraction grating. Complementary sequences are detected by hybridisation with an oligonucleotide functionalised gold nanoparticle label. Detection of the gold nanoparticles is achieved by examining the diffraction efficiency of the diffraction gratings formed by laser illumination
