This dissertation's aim is to highlight a forgotten author of a genre that was held in contempt by Victorian society; a genre that was a first of its time, breaking down boundaries in a new emerging publishing industry that was publishing cheap periodicals at a more rapid rate due to the printing press. With this advanced system, the traditionalists in the industry felt threatened and attempted to thwart its efforts, which presented itself through the theory of cultural hierarchy; by using this literary theory and discourse, this dissertation will explore the narrative surrounding the Sensation Fiction genre, the woman reader, and the woman author. Using Victorian society and the theory of cultural hierarchy, this dissertation will showcase how women authors' novels were seen as “low-brow” art and thus are considered “guilty pleasures.” This will be analyzed through the lens of the author Gertrude Fenton, her written works, and their critical reception. The comprehensive primary and secondary research conducted has aided in rediscovering Gertrude Fenton. Her novels and various literary periodicals have assisted in showcasing her as an author and how the patriarchal Victorian society hindered women authors and women readers from moving into the upper-class literary space

Cold cracking in DC-cast high strength aluminum alloy ingots: An intrinsic problem intensified by casting process parameters

    No full text
For almost half a century the catastrophic failure of direct chill (DC) cast high strength aluminum alloys has been challenging the production of sound ingots. To overcome this problem, a criterion is required that can assist the researchers in predicting the critical conditions which facilitate the catastrophic failure of the ingots. This could be achieved at first glance by application of computer simulations to assess the level and distribution of residual thermal stresses. However, the simulation results are only able to show the critical locations and conditions where and when high stresses may appear in the ingots. The prediction of critical void/crack size requires simultaneous application of fracture mechanics. In this paper, we present the thermo-mechanical simulation results that indicate the critical crack size distribution in several DC-cast billets cast at various casting conditions. The simulation results were validated upon experimental DC-casting trials and revealed that the existence of voids/cracks with a considerable size is required for cold cracking to occur.Materials Science & EngineeringMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

Een brede waterkering: Van concept naar praktijk

    No full text
Civil Engineering and Geoscience

    Search for chameleons with CAST

    No full text
Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author)In this work we present a search for (solar) chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). This novel experimental technique, in the field of dark energy research, exploits both the chameleon coupling to matter (βm) and to photons (βγ) via the Primakoff effect. By reducing the X-ray detection energy threshold used for axions from 1 keV to 400 eV CAST became sensitive to the converted solar chameleon spectrum which peaks around 600 eV. Even though we have not observed any excess above background, we can provide a 95% C.L. limit for the coupling strength of chameleons to photons of βγ≲1011 for 1<βm<106

Middle Grades Novels in Verse: Examining Stereotypes in Early Adolescent Characters

    No full text
In this article, the authors share analyses of two middle grade novels in verse to demonstrate how pre-service and in-service teachers and librarians may engage in similar analyses themselves or with their students. Authors use Lesko’s confident characterizations and Sarigianides et al.’s youth lens (Rethinking the “Adolescent”) to analyze two middle grade novels in verse. The authors found that while stereotypes are present, they do not define the characters. Rather, the stereotypes illustrate the growth of the characters as they navigate adolescence. The final verses are not presented as endings, but beginnings of the characters’ journeys
