CNSL: From Waste of the Cashew Agro-Industry to precious renewable resource for bio-based fine chemicals and new materials

    No full text
The new millennium is marked by a growing search for renewable fuels and alternative raw materials from biomass in the petrochemicals industry. Thus, the preparation of fine chemicals and innovative materials from natural and renewable resources is an attractive topic for academic and industrial research especially when the purpose is to recycle huge amount of agro-industrial wastes. Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), well known by-product from the cashew industry rich in natural phenols, is widely produced in many countries (Africa, Brazil, India). Cardanol, obtained as the main product by vacuum distillation of the CNSL, has been used for the preparation of fine chemicals and hybrid materials [1, 2]. In the last years, different classes of compounds, such for example porphyrins, phthalocyanines, fullerenes cardanol based and others fine chemicals, have been synthesized from selected components of CNSL through environmentally sustainable strategies [1-5]. Moreover, innovative composites and hybrid cardanol based compounds have been used to design eco-friendly functional materials and processes [6-9]. References: 1) Mele G., Vasapollo G. Mapping the spatial variation of soil moisture at the large scale using GPR for pavement applications

    No full text
The characterization of shallow soil moisture spatial variability at the large scale is a crucial issue in many research studies and fields of application ranging from agriculture and geology to civil and environmental engineering. In this framework, this work contributes to the research in the area of pavement engineering for preventing damages and planning effective management. High spatial variations of subsurface water content can lead to unexpected damage of the load-bearing layers; accordingly, both safety and operability of roads become lower, thereby affecting an increase in expected accidents. \ud A pulsed ground-penetrating radar system with ground-coupled antennas, i.e., 600-MHz and 1600-MHz center frequencies of investigation, was used to collect data in a 16 m × 16 m study site in the Po Valley area in northern Italy. Two ground-penetrating radar techniques were employed to non-destructively retrieve the subsurface moisture spatial profile. The first technique is based on the evalu¬ation of the dielectric permittivity from the attenuation of signal amplitudes. Therefore, dielectrics were converted into moisture values using soil-specific coefficients from Topp’s relationship. Ground-penetrating-radar-derived values of soil moisture were then compared with measurements from eight capacitance probes. The second technique is based on the Rayleigh scattering of the signal from the Fresnel theory, wherein the shifts of the peaks of frequency spectra are assumed comprehensive indi¬cators for characterizing the spatial variability of moisture. Both ground-penetrating radar methods have shown great promise for mapping the spatial variability of soil moisture at the large scale

Innovating as a texture of practices

    No full text
This chapter focuses on the social ways of doing business innovation in actual conditions of complexity. By applying the concept of practical accomplishment, innovating is seen as "a texture of practices," that is, a set of practices resting on other practices. We use the metaphor of texture to develop a fresh conceptualization of innovating. A texture is made up of a weft and a warp; the warp concerns the vertical threads that run along the length of the yardage and the weft refers to the horizontal threads that run from side to side. In innovating as a texture, the weft represents the practice of co-creating and the warp represents the practice of weaving. The multiple connections in actions that arise at the cross points of warp and weft allow the big picture to emerge. This conceptualization goes beyond the economic stance to emphasize the social-contextual nature of innovating, in which establishing relationships and giving them specific forms within a situated practice activate knowing. The focus shifts to the activities, actors, and resources involved in sociomaterial and cultural practices in which innovating occurs. In this realm, innovating emerges as a continuous process
