    The Role of Oscillatory Phase in Determining the Temporal Organization of Perception: Evidence from Sensory Entrainment

    Recent behavioral, neuroimaging, and neurophysiological studies have renewed the idea that the information processing within different temporal windows is linked to the phase and/or frequency of the ongoing oscillations, predominantly in the theta/alpha band (∼4–7 and 8–12 Hz, respectively). However, being correlational in nature, this evidence might reflect a nonfunctional byproduct rather than having a causal role. A more direct link can be shown with methods that manipulate oscillatory activity. Here, we used audiovisual entrainment at different frequencies in the prestimulus period of a temporal integration/segregation task. We hypothesized that entrainment would align ongoing oscillations and drive them toward the stimulation frequency. To reveal behavioral oscillations in temporal perception after the entrainment, we sampled the segregation/integration performance densely in time. In Experiment 1, two groups of human participants (both males and females) received stimulation either at the lower or the upper boundary of the alpha band (∼8.5 vs 11.5 Hz). For both entrainment frequencies, we found a phase alignment of the perceptual oscillation across subjects, but with two different power spectra that peaked near the entrainment frequency. These results were confirmed when perceptual oscillations were characterized in the time domain with sinusoidal fittings. In Experiment 2, we replicated the findings in a within-subject design, extending the results for frequencies in the theta (∼6.5 Hz), but not in the beta (∼15 Hz), range. Overall, these findings show that temporal segregation can be modified by sensory entrainment, providing evidence for a critical role of ongoing oscillations in the temporal organization of perception.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTThe continuous flow of sensory input is not processed in an analog fashion, but rather is grouped by the perceptual system over time. Recent studies pinpointed the phase and/or frequency of the neural oscillations in the theta/alpha band (∼4–12 Hz) as possible mechanisms underlying temporal windows in perception. Here, we combined two innovative methodologies to provide more direct support for this evidence. We used sensory entrainment to align neural oscillations to different frequencies and then characterized the resultant perceptual oscillation with a temporal dense sampling of the integration/segregation performance. Our results provide the first evidence that the frequency of temporal segregation can be modified by sensory entrainment, supporting a critical role of ongoing oscillations in the integration/segregation of information over time.</jats:p

    This Christmas letter written November 30, 1999, by David Zimmer is titled "Season's Greetings from the last of the Red-Hot-Santas!" It features an illustration of Santa Claus with a guitar, and a summary of Zimmer's year. David Zimmer (1929-2005) was born in Harrisburg, Ohio. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years during the Korean War at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he performed in drag for wounded soldiers. After the war, he returned to Ohio. Zimmer performed as Dolly Divine, a name inspired by the song "Hello Dolly." In 1964, he established the Berwick Ball with Orn Huntington, another important early gay activist in Central Ohio. The Ball began as a formal Halloween costume ball that provided a safe space to gather and enjoy drag shows for the gay community each year; over the years, it grew into an annual Halloween tradition and an important fundraiser for the AIDS movement and other charities. During the 1970s, Zimmer was also known for hosting lavish parties at his Harrisburg home. In 1989, he moved to the German Village area of Columbus where he remained active in the community. During the 1990s, Zimmer continued to perform in and out of drag and commissioned costume designer Dick Frank to make elaborate outfits. Zimmer worked for Huntington National Bank for 39 years and was a member of the Harrisburg United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the German Village Society

    Nonretinotopic visual processing in the brain

    A basic principle in visual neuroscience is the retinotopic organization of neural receptive fields. Here, we review behavioral, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging evidence for nonretinotopic processing of visual stimuli. A number of behavioral studies have shown perception depending on object or external-space coordinate systems, in addition to retinal coordinates. Both single-cell neurophysiology and neuroimaging have provided evidence for the modulation of neural firing by gaze position and processing of visual information based on craniotopic or spatiotopic coordinates. Transient remapping of the spatial and temporal properties of neurons contingent on saccadic eye movements has been demonstrated in visual cortex, as well as frontal and parietal areas involved in saliency/priority maps, and is a good candidate to mediate some of the spatial invariance demonstrated by perception. Recent studies suggest that spatiotopic selectivity depends on a low spatial resolution system of maps that operates over a longer time frame than retinotopic processing and is strongly modulated by high-level cognitive factors such as attention. The interaction of an initial and rapid retinotopic processing stage, tied to new fixations, and a longer lasting but less precise nonretinotopic level of visual representation could underlie the perception of both a detailed and a stable visual world across saccadic eye movements
