    Becoming Citizens in an Era of Globalization and Transnational Migration: Re-imagining Citizenship as Critical Practice

    This article examines how the perspectives and experiences of Arab American youth from immigrant communities can help educators think about what it means to teach young people to become active participants in the social, civic, and political spheres within and across the boundaries of nation-states. Arab American youths' perspectives are reflective of the transnational nature of their life experiences, as well as the unfortunate ways they have been positioned as enemy-outsiders to the United States in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Listening closely to the experiences and perspectives of these young people yields concrete implications for designing citizenship education that reflects the changing nature of belonging and citizenship. This article proposes that we stop thinking about citizenship primarily in relation to national identifications and begin to see it as a set of critical practices—practices that give young people the tools to work for social change within and across the boundaries of nation-states.This is an electronic version of an article published in Abu El-Haj,T.     Contesting the Politics of Culture, Rewriting the Boundaries of Inclusion: Working for Social Justice with Muslim and Arab Communities

    This article calls on anthropologists of education to assert a more public voice attacking the ideological purposes to which the concept of “culture” has been deployed following the September 11 attacks.     Imagining Postnationalism: Arts, Citizenship Education,and Arab American Youth

    This article explores an Arab American community arts organization as a site for promoting youth civic participation and social activism. Studying a citizenship education project outside the school walls, and focusing on the arts as a medium for this work, foregrounds the role of the symbolic for engaging youth as active participants in democratic society.     Wiggle-matching using known-age pine from Jermyn Street, London

    A slice of pine from the period covered by single-year calibration data (Stuiver 1993) was selected to serve as part of the quality assurance procedures of the English Heritage radiocarbon dating program, following successful wiggle-matching of 14C measurements from structural 15th century English oak timbers (Hamilton et al. 2007). The timber selected was a roofing element from a house on Jermyn Street, central London, demonstrated by dendrochronology to have been felled in AD 1670. Eighteen single-ring samples were dated by the 14C laboratories at Groningen, Oxford, and SUERC: each laboratory was sent a random selection of 6 samples. This approach was intended to mimic the mix of samples and relative ages incorporated into Bayesian chronological models during routine project research.     Adulteration of honey: relation between microscopic analysis and delta C-13 measurements

    Upon routine microscopic analysis of some honey samples, parenchyma cells, single rings of ring vessels and epidermal cells are found. These cells originate from the sugar cane stem. We investigated whether there was a relation between these plant fragments and the delta C-13 value of honey. 17 honey samples and 6 cane sugar samples were analyzed. Microscopic analysis of the samples was done quantitatively by counting the parenchyma cells, rings, and epidermal cells present in 10 g of the sample using polarized light microscopy. Also the repeatability of the microscopic analysis was determined by calculating the standard deviation of the values from the processing and examination of 8 sub-samples from one honey sample For all honey samples in this study, it was found that if more than 150 parenchyma cells and/or 10 rings in 10 g were detected, the samples were adulterated with C-4 sugars (from sugar cane or corn) according to the delta C-13 method. Lower microscopic counts indicated honey with suspected adulteration below 7%, the limit of detection of the delta C-13 method. Overall, the microscopic procedure was a good screening method for the detection of adulteration of honey with cane sugar products

    The use of electrolysis for accurate delta O-17 and delta O-18 isotope measurements in water

    We present a new system to measure the relative isotopic abundances of both rare isotopes of oxygen in water. Using electrolysis with CuSO4 as electrolyte, water is transformed into oxygen gas. This gas is subsequently analyzed with a standard Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer. We investigated the features of the system in detail. The results for delta(17)O and delta(18)O are carefully calibrated against delta(18)O of VSMOW using our "conventional" H2O-CO2 equilibrium system. For the electrolysis system, we obtain an accuracy (including calibration) of 0.10 parts per thousand for delta(18)O, and 0.07 parts per thousand for delta(17)O. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness and accuracy of the system by analyzing a large set of natural waters (both fresh and salt waters). We establish the O-17 and O-18 relation to be of the type: 1 + delta(17)O = (1 + delta(18)O)(lambda), and find lambda to be 0.5281 +/- 0.0015. We conclude that the O-17 fractionation in water appears to be completely analogous to that of O-18. Still, measurements concerning the equilibrium and kinetic fractionation of the evaporation process are needed. The new method is an excellent alternative to the traditional H2O-CO2 equilibrium method. Moreover, its capability to also measure O-17 may be fruitfully exploited, e.g., in biomedical studies extending the doubly labelled water technique, or in studies of stratospheric water

    Far-wing collisional redistribution of light in the barium-rare gas systems

    We have measured intensity and polarization of far-wing collisionally redistributed light from Ba perturbed by He, Ne, and Kr in a heated cell (T~800 K). Collisional alignment decay rates were also determined. The light was detuned ±3-900 cm-1 from the 5535 Å BaI 61S-61P resonance line. The rare gas pressure was about 5 mbar. Together with earlier data, the results form a complete set of data for comparison with forthcoming predictions based on state-of-the-art theory for potential curves of Ba-rare gas systems. With emphasis on systematical trends, the results are discussed in terms of earlier theoretical and experimental findings for similar two-electron systems.

    IT-governance practices: COBIT

    With the increasing dependence of enterprises on IT, and with the widely spreading use of e-business, IT governance is attracting increasing worldwide attention. A proper IT governance would promote enterprise performance through intelligent and efficient utilization of IT. In addition, standard IT governance practices would provide a suitable open environment for e-business that provides compatibility for inter-enterprise interaction. This review is concerned with introducing the current state of IT governance, in four main steps. First, the review identifies what is meant by IT governance, and presents the main organizations concerned with its development, namely: ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) and ITGI (Information Technology Governance Institute). Secondly, the review highlights COBIT (Control Objectives for Information and related Technologies) the widely acknowledged IT governance framework, produced by ITGI. Thirdly, the current state of COBIT use is addressed using a recent global survey.
