    Abstract: Professional development of faculty members is an emerging concept in developing countries. It has been embraced quickly in developed nations unlike developing and under developing nations. The major purpose of this paper is to explore various perceived issues and challenges to professional development of faculty members and to provide suggestions to improve such emerging problems. This paper provides suggestions and recommendations for the universities where professional development practices have not yet started or have been started but facing some problems. Author has explored various perceived issues and challenges highlighted by prior studies that have further served as basis to design structured questionnaire and semi-structured interview questions for this study. Four renowned universities of Punjab were selected from which sample of 108 respondents were chosen for data collection. Data has been analyzed by taking simple means and standard deviations through SPSS. The findings of this paper reveal that the issue that is most alarming and has got lowest mean score is granting rewards and incentives and level of satisfaction of faculty members to professional development programs. Author has provided various recommendations as to conduct proper need assessment before training, to properly plan quality training programs and take input of trainees as well, to increase grants and funds for training, to create positive working environment for teachers, to train the trainers, to provide financial and non financial benefits to trainees and to properly scheduling training programs. This study could be beneficial for policy makers, managers and administrators of universities who could device better policies and practices to promote quality teaching in institutes.     The DUF221 domain-containing (DDP) genes identification and expression analysis in tomato under abiotic and phytohormone stress

    The domain of unknown function (DUF221 domain-containing) proteins regulates various aspects of plant growth, development, responses to abiotic stresses, and hormone transduction pathways. To understand the role of DDP proteins in tomato, a comprehensive genome-wide analysis was performed in the tomato genome. A total of 12 DDP genes were identified and distributed in 8 chromosomes in the tomato genome. Phylogenetically all SlDDPs were clustered into four clades, subsequently supported by their gene structure and conserved motifs distribution. The SlDDPs contained various cis-acting elements involved in plant responses to abiotic and various phytohormones stresses. The tissue-specific expression profile analysis revealed the constitutive expression of SlDDPs in roots, leaves, and developmental phases of fruit. It was found that SlDDP1, SlDDP3, SlDDP4, SlDDP9, SlDDP10, and SlDDP12 exhibited high expression levels in fruits at different development stages. Of these genes, SlDDP12 contained ethylene (ERE) responsive elements in their promoter regions, suggesting its role in ethylene-dependent fruit ripening. It was found that a single SlDDP induced by two or more abiotic and phytohormone stresses. These include, SlDDP1, SlDDP2, SlDDP3, SlDDP4, SlDDP7, SlDDP8, and SlDDP10 was induced under salt, drought, ABA, and IAA stresses. Moreover, tomato SlDDPs were targeted by multiple miRNA gene families as well. In conclusion, this study predicted that the putative DDP genes might help improve abiotic and phytohormone tolerance in plants, particularly tomato, rice, and other economically important crop plant species.</p

    Complex Pyogenic Liver Abscess: Outcome of Open vs Laparoscopic Drainage

    OBJECTIVES Our study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic drainage as a management of complex pyogenic liver abscesses in comparison to open surgical drainage. METHODOLOGY The comparative research design was used to compare the outcomes, complications, perioperative morbidity, mortality, and potential recurrence of 60 patients with a complex pyogenic liver abscess who were hospitalized at the General Surgery Department of Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar and treated either laparoscopically or openly from January 2019 to December 2020. 30 patients had open drainage management, while 30 patients received laparoscopic drainage management. For all patients, pus was examined for culture sensitivity. Patients with a small, solitary and unilocular pyogenic liver abscess that improved with antibiotic therapy and or/and percutaneous drainage were excluded. Each patient had a thorough clinical evaluation, lab tests, ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvis and abdomen. RESULTS All patients underwent abdominal ultrasonography &amp; sonographic diagnosis was made in 43(71.7%), followed by a computed tomography scan (CT) in 12(20%) &amp; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnosis was made in 5(8.3%) patients respectively. Diabetes mellitus was present in 15(25%) patients, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 10(16.7%) and severe anemia in 9(15%) patients. All individuals associated with co-morbidity were considered high-risk patients. CONCLUSION Laparoscopic drainage of liver abscess has a shorter surgical time, lower morbidity rate, and shorter hospital stay as compared to open surgical drainage
