    No full text
Holograph letter from Bishop Charles McHugh, Derry, to (Hagan), sending statement about the (Christian) Brothers; expecting not to change it should the case go before the congregation. Wishing to confine the order's work to primary education. Also enclosing petition for dispensation from Fr. James O'Kane (not extant). In addition asking to obtain a 'sanatio in radice' concerning lay sisters in the Convent of Mercy, and a dispensation for the re-election of a Mother (Mary) de Sales Kelly at the Loreto Convent. While they grieve over the loss of the cardinal, Armagh has an excellent successor. – Enclosing 7-page typescript statement 'The Christian Brothers in the City of Derry and their opposition to the bishop's arrangements for primary and secondary education', signed by McHugh, in six points including a summary. Now also enclosing copy with few ink and pencil markings. (See also letter from J. McShane of 8 December, below, and the subsequent file of adaptations in Italian of the statements.
