The Politics of Impossibility: CeCe McDonald and Trayvon Martin— the Bursting of Black Rage
Get PDFWhat can the affect of black rage do in a era of impossibility marked by the circulation of neoliberal post-race post-feminist themes? I argue that black rage is a key weapon in the fight against our impossible era—black rage operates through an affective bursting apart, disrupting circulating narratives connected to a post racial, post feminist world and charting a new path of social unrest that has the potential to transform the social order. I locate political uses of black rage through two case studies: CeCe McDonald, a black Trans* woman who was brutally attacked by a group of transphobic and white supremacist in summer of 2012. And in the Justice for Trayvon Martin March and Rally in Atlanta, Georgia in July of 2013. Both cases studies prove black rage can collectivize the struggles of differing people producing a feeling of possibility during our era of impossibility

Cece McDonald is a black, bisexual trans woman. After defending herself against a racist, transphobic assault, McDonald served 19 months in a men's prison. Since her release in 2014, McDonald continues to contribute to LGBTQ+ activism and arts.The 43rd Annual Seattle Pride Parade took place on June 25, 2017. The parade began at 11 a.m, and proceeded along 4th Avenue from Union Street up to Seattle Center, lasting about 2 ½ hours. The city estimates that about 200,000 people attended the event. The parade encountered minor clashes with protestors over the course of the event. An anti-gay religious group tried to take over the head of the parade, but they were rebuffed by marchers. Also, Black Lives Matter protestors held a sit in on the parade route to honor Charleena Lyles, a Seattle mother of four who was killed by police earlier in the month. The Seattle City Council, the Seattle Police Department, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Seattle Public Libraries, Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft, and Alaska Airlines all had representatives participating in the parade. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray also participated. Different stops along the parade route were staffed by announcers who spoke to the crowds. Announcers included Abbeu Roads, The Lady B, Dontella Howe, TylahMay Jackson, Violet Deville, Diva le Deviant, Tricky D and Dynasty.
In June 1974, Seattle celebrated its first Gay Pride Week; in 1992, Seattle's Gay Pride Week was expanded to explicitly include bisexual and transgender communities. Seattle Pride week continues annually, and is comprised of numerous events and gatherings which celebrate LGBTQ+ communities.

Couples Who Collaborate: Tom Angleberger and Cece Bell
No full textTom Angleberger and Cece Bell are the unique couple behind numerous memorable books for children. The couple creates joyful, relatable characters and settings that invite children to return to their books again and again. In addition to their collaborative projects, the couple also supports each other in their independent pursuits, which are also hugely successful. Their insights and experiences on collaborating and creating books for children draw from their years of experience, and success, honing their craft together.Cece Bell is the author and illustrator of a diverse range of books, including Newbery Honor–winning autobiography El Deafo (2014), Geisel Honor–winning Rabbit and Robot: The Sleepover (2014), Rabbit and Robot and Ribbit (2017), I Yam a Donkey (2016), Bee-Wigged (2017), Itty Bitty (2009), and the Sock Monkey series. She has also created books with her husband, Tom, including Crankee Doodle (2013) and the Inspector Flytrap series. She earned her graduate degree in illustration and design at Kent State University and became a full-time author and illustrator after many years of working as a freelance illustrator and designer
Toward Abolitionist Genealogy
No full textIn this essay, I offer a brief for “abolitionist genealogy” as a method and philosophical practice. By locating instances of this method within the work of prison abolitionists who are incarcerated or formerly incarcerated (specifically organizers of the 2016 National Prison Strike, CeCe McDonald, and the abolitionist organizations generationFIVE and Black and Pink), I argue that such a method is already available to theorists and critical historians of the present if we are willing to attend to the absences and presences that constitute our academic communities. I ground my brief for abolitionist genealogy by centering the experiences of queer, trans, gender‐nonconforming, and intersex incarcerated people as exemplary (rather than exceptional) of how prisons and jails are fundamentally violent places which cannot, as McDonald puts it, be made safe. Lastly, I link these concerns to the broader question of queer and TGNCI visibility politics in carceral institutions such as the jail/prison and the university
