“Twin one, twin too”. What does it mean to be a twin? A psychoanalytic investigation into the phenomenon of twins
In the context of this thesis, the author will explain “identity” focusing on two theories from Jacques Lacan’s “Mirror Stage” and Melanie Klein’s “paranoid schizoid and depressive position”, in an attempt to understand what it means for a single individual and how they form their identity. Outlying similarities and differences in how identity is conceptualised within these perspectives and discussing the clinical implications. The author will then apply this to twin studies and observations exploring the consequences and gains that can occur in relation to each child in the twin ship, therefore, answering the proposed question of what does it mean to be a twin from a psychoanalytic perspective. It will focus on the question of how the twins form their own identity when another is always present. The study will also discuss the impact of the death of a twin and the implications for twins whom are in analysis. The piece of research will then conclude, reflecting back on the previous chapters putting forward questions and recommendations for further research. Author keywords: Twins ,identity, psychoanalysi
Nova irska žena u romanima Emer Martin
The novels Breakfast in Babylon and More Bread or I’ll Appear written by an Irish author Emer Martin deal with young women who experience neglect and sense of displacement in their native Ireland. By becoming female emigrants who wander in an infinite pursuit for something intangible, they tear up traditional structures of religion, family and state to create a new pattern of liquid modernity among Irish emigrants in a globalized world. While associating with people from the edge of society, they ridicule Irish traditional values and change the representation of Irish traditional diaspora. This paper gives a general picture of issues that Martin’s compulsive travellers encounter in the world. Their role is to break the ice and start the wave of new, contemporary female emigrants who concentrate on adventurous freedom instead uptight tradition.

Vattel’s Droit des Gens is a milestone in the historical development of modern international law. Published in 1758, the treatise -among the many aspects studied -analyzes
the theme of the ius migrandi. In the combined perspective of natural law and the law of nations, Vattel studies the concept of migration with regard to two specific aspects: on the one hand, the right to leave one's own country andon the other "the right to live somewhere". Under the first profile, the author questions the existence and the content of the right of the individual citizen to leave the country and the society of which he is a member, paying particular attention to the concept and role of the social contract. Under the second profile of analysis the migration phenomenon is analyzed with reference to the natural right of manto “live somewhere”. The theme is therefore linked to the delicate issue of the right to asylum. This dual perspective opens the argumentative framework on a further controversial aspect: the duties (and at the same time the rights) of a Nation towards asylumseekers.Ciencias ReligiosasDerech
Bone morphogenetic proteins enhance an epithelial-mesenchymal transition in normal airway epithelial cells during restitution of a disrupted epithelium
Background: Mechanisms of airway repair are poorly understood. It has been proposed that, following injury,
progenitor populations such as club cells (Clara) become undifferentiated, proliferate and re-differentiate to
re-epithelialise the airway. The exact phenotype of such cells during repair is unknown however. We hypothesised
that airway epithelial cells (AECs) undergo some degree of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in order to
migrate over a denuded airway and effect re-epithelialisation. Furthermore, based on our previous findings that
BMP signalling is an early event in AECs following injury in vivo and that BMP4 down-regulates E-cadherin
expression and enhances migration in AECs in vitro, we hypothesised that BMPs could play a role in inducing such
a phenotypic switch.
Methods: Normal AECs were isolated from mouse lungs and analysed in a model of a disrupted epithelium. EMT
marker expression and BMP signalling were examined by immunofluorescence, Western blotting and RT-PCR.
Results: Following generation of a wound area, AECs at the wound edge migrated and acquired a mesenchymallike
morphology. E-cadherin expression was reduced in migrating cells while vimentin and α-smooth muscle actin
(α-SMA) expression was increased. Re-expression of membrane E-cadherin was subsequently observed in some cells
in the wound area following re-establishment of the monolayer. A transient increase in the incidence of nuclear
phosphorylated Smad1/5/8 was observed in migrating cells compared with confluent cells, indicating active BMP
signalling during migration. BMP antagonists noggin and gremlin inhibited cell migration, confirming the
involvement of BMP signalling in migration and indicating autocrine signalling, possibly involving BMP7 or BMP4
which were expressed in AECs. Exogenous BMP2, BMP4 and BMP7 induced a mesenchymal-like morphology in
AECs, enhanced the rate of cell migration and increased α-SMA protein expression in AECs.
Conclusions: Following disruption of an intact epithelium, migrating AECs at the wound edge acquire an EMT-like
phenotype involving altered expression of E-cadherin, vimentin and α-SMA. BMP signalling is involved in AEC
migration and is likely to mediate the switch towards an EMT-like phenotype by altering protein expression to
facilitate cell migration and wound closure. We propose therefore that acquisition of an EMT-like phenotype by
AECs is a normal aspect of wound repair. Furthermore, we suggest that diseases involving fibrosis may arise
because the EMT phase of repair is prolonged by chronic injury/inflammation, rather than being caused by it, as is
the current paradigm
EM Interference Analysis of the Fly's Eye Antenna System in Stadium Scenarios
In this thesis the interference aspect of the Fly's Eye multi-beam antenna system of \cite{FlyEye}, a new base station concept to tackle the high data rate demands in spart stadiums is investigated. In particular the co-polar interference performance and the degree of multipath interference within the single spatial channel are considered. A tool is developed to quickly evaluate the co-polar isolation (CI) achieved by a given base station element pattern. With it the design described in \cite{MartaLens} is evaluated and it is found that the pattern achieves a CI of 11.2dB.The single spatial channel of the system, stretching from the base station suspended above the pitch to the user terminal (e.g. a smartphone) held by the user located in the seating area of the stadium, is analyzed in downlink and applying a deterministic approach. Three frequencies - 120GHz, 25GHz and 5GHz - as well as the two separate cases of smooth and rough surface scatterers are considered. The incident and scattered field of the main scatterers in the geometry are studied in the region in front of the user, where the terminal is likely to be held. Further the received power for various terminal locations and orientation angles is evaluated. It is shown that an antenna with directivity larger than 7dB is sufficient to effectively filter out any unwanted multipath. Further, allowing for more complex terminal antenna structures enables to implement the concept of direct NLOS and maintain connectivity in shadowed regions by pointing the antenna at the torso, although in the rough case the received power can still fluctuate about 10dB according to the location of the terminal.Electrical Engineering | Telecommunications and Sensing System
Rebel with a cause : Dutch children’s author Miep Diekmann as the personification of ’68
The rebellious spirit of 1968 was characterised, among other things, by a strong aversion to authority of any form. In Dutch children’s literature, this spirit is personified by the author Miep Diekmann. From the end of the 1950s until the end of the 1980s, Diekmann contested all kinds of social injustice, both in her children’s books and in her critical work. This article discusses how she challenged the status quo in Dutch children’s literature, firstly through her efforts to improve the cultural status of children’s literature, and secondly through writing books with a different view of the world than the one with which children were then familiar. In interviews, reviews, and discussions with politicians, she successfully appealed for more academic and critical attention for books for young readers. With her children’s books she wanted to make her readers think independently about all kinds of social injustice. Whereas in her first books a tension can be observed between her ambition to make children aware of forms of inequality and her intention to let her reading audience judge for themselves, in her later novels, in particular in De dagen van olim, [The Days of Yore] (1971), she presents social injustice in a way that leaves more to the imagination of her readers
Diversifying history:A large-scale analysis of changes in researcher demographics and scholarly agendas
Background In recent years, interest has grown in whether and to what extent demographic diversity sparks discovery and innovation in research. At the same time, topic modeling has been employed to discover differences in what women and men write about. This study engages these two strands of scholarship to explore associations between changing researcher demographics and research questions asked in the discipline of history. Specifically, we analyze developments in history as women entered the field. Methods We focus on author gender in diachronic analysis of history dissertations from 1980 (when online data is first available) to 2015 and a select set of general history journals from 1950 to 2015. We use correlated topic modeling and network visualizations to map developments in research agendas over time and to examine how women and men have contributed to these developments. Results Our summary snapshot of aggregate interests of women and men for the period 1950 to 2015 identifies new topics associated with women authors: gender and women’s history, body history, family and households, consumption and consumerism, and sexuality. Diachronic analysis demonstrates that while women pioneered topics such as gender and women’s history or the history of sexuality, these topics broaden over time to become methodological frameworks that historians widely embraced and that changed in interesting ways as men engaged with them. Our analysis of history dissertations surface correlations between advisor/advisee gender pairings and choice of dissertation topic. Conclusions Overall, this quantitative longitudinal study suggests that the growth in women historians has coincided with the broadening of research agendas and an increased sensitivity to new topics and methodologies in the field.</p

Unpuzzling customary international law (CIL) : the invention of customary law of nations from Francisco de Vitoria to Emer de Vattel
Defence date: 14 September 2018Examining Board: Prof. N. Bhuta, European University Institute / University of Edinburgh; Prof. B. Kingsbury, New York University; Prof. M. Koskenniemi, University of Helsinki; Prof. A. Thomson, European University InstituteThe author was awarded the Antonio Cassese Prize for the best doctoral thesis in the field of international law (June 2019)This thesis seeks to trace an intellectual history of the concept of customary international law (CIL) within the natural law and ius gentium tradition. Across a timespan of two centuries, in the present work I will make the claim that a strong, foundational relationship exists between the normative content of natural law and the emergence of customary law of nations as a distinctive concept of the international legal discourse. The work is divided in two parts. The first deals with the emergence of the concept of customary law of nations in the early modern 16th century legal tradition, by juxtaposing and contrasting two different natural law doctrines, the theological one of the School of Salamanca (through the eyes of Francisco de Vitoria and Francisco Suárez) and the rhetorical theory of ius gentium by Alberico Gentili. The second part takes into account the modern legal tradition from Hugo Grotius, via Samuel Pufendorf and Christian Wolff, to Emer de Vattel, by showing the relationship between custom and the systematization of natural law into a body of rational law which constitutes a leitmotif of the 17th-18th century. The aim of this work is to assess the argumentative strategies that led to the formation of the concept of customary international law. In other words, the overarching thesis of this project is that the natural law and ius gentium tradition have provided normative content to CIL in ways that are still recognizable today. An intellectual-historical analysis is useful to qualify such content, to show the conceptual development of CIL over time, and ultimately, to answer the question of why CIL is so important to the Western legal tradition of international law
