Indigenous Epistemology Descent Into the Womb of Decolonized Research Methodologies

    No full text
Indigenous Epistemology problematizes the self-reflexive inquiry between two researchers engaged in transnational collaboration that asserts experiential pedagogy as a tool to decolonize research methodology and honor the inter-generational stories that empower Indigenous people across the globe. The authors demonstrate the direct connection between Black Lives Matter, SOSBlakAustralia and the Maroons of Jamaica as examples of contemporary Indigenous people disrupting hegemony through agentive action that inspires global awareness and pushes for systemic change. In elevating the critical epistemologies of the ancient cultures of the Aboriginals of Australia and the African Diaspora, the authors assert that the legacies and current operations of colonialism must be disrupted and replaced with an emancipatory epistemology. No Full Tex

Season 2 Episode 11: Worship styles, a matter of taste?

    No full text
When churches are torn about whether to update their worship services or stick to tradition, too many decide to literally tear into two services. But does this create more problems than it solves? Theologian and author Marva Dawn and John Witvliet of the Calvin Institute for Christian Worship recommend ways around this harmful solution

Effect of pretreatment with an adenosine analogue, N(6)-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA), on stroke outcome in rats

Adenosine A1 receptor agonists, such as N6-cyclohexyladenosine (CHA), N6-(R)-phenylisopropyladenosine (R-PIA), and N 6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA), are neuroprotective when administered prior to a hypoxia-ischemia (H-I). Activation of A1 receptors may also mediate ischemic preconditioning. It was hypothesized, therefore, that a single administration of CPA prior to a H-I insult would provide neuroprotection against H-I induced damage in the rat hippocampus. This thesis examined the neuroprotective response to CPA when it was administered at varying doses and varying time points prior to a H-I insult. Results confirm the neuroprotective effect resulting from activation of adenosine A1 receptors before a H-I insult, against H-I induced damage and suggest a possible therapeutic application for adenosine Al agonists for the prevention of stroke damage. Cyclopentyl-adenosine decreases caspase-3 activity and LDH release following simulated ischemia in cerebellar granule neurons

Activation of adenosine A1 receptors in vivo or in vitro, prior to simulated ischemic insults have been demonstrated to be neuroprotective. Preconditioning with A1 receptor agonists, both in vivo and in vitro, has been shown to induce neuroprotective effects against necrosis even when administered 24–72 hours before ischemic insult. This thesis examined the neuroprotective effects of the selective A1 receptor agonist, N6-cyclopentyl-adenosine (CPA), against both apoptotic and necrotic cell death following simulated ischemia in cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons. Using antibodies directed towards neuronal nuclear protein and glial fibrillary acid protein, the purity of cerebellar granule cell cultures was found to be 98.6 ± 0.4%. This indicates that the results from these experiments were likely mediated by effects of the drugs and simulated ischemia on neurons and not astrocytes. To determine if the neuroprotection induced by CPA treatment was mediated by activation of A1 receptors, a concentration response curve for DPCPX was generated in the presence and absence of 1μM CPA. Let Me Speak: Teachers & Students Engaging in Collaborative Inquiry to Disrupt the Standardization of Writing

    No full text
Based on the findings of an auto-ethnographic research project conducted between teacher and students, this presentation engages the audience in using culturally relevant, critical pedagogy to elevate the student’s voice within the landscape of standardization and disrupt the tradition of failure asserted by statistics on the achievement gap

Education as the Practice of Freedom: Writing Truth Into the Curriculum Across the Globe

    No full text
As a result of the complex, multilayered, and problematic environment in which they work, two scholars collaborating between the continents of Australia and North America complicate the data from standardized testing in their communities to argue for the implementation of indigenous knowledge epistemology as a strategy to achieve social justice and equity in global classrooms. The chapter explores the residual effects of imperialism on the formerly colonized and investigates postcolonial themes such as the indigenous self, gender constructs, cultural and communal identity. The study reveals just how critical it is to global research to have the benefit of scholars collaborating across borders. The study provides findings and offers recommendations in direct response to the question: How can educators engage students as collaborators within a third space that elevates their voices as successful students? No Full Tex

Holy or wholly? : a systematic theological study of Sabbath keeping in the works of Samuele Bacchiocchi and Marva J. Dawn

Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2018.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is a study of the doctrinal concept of Sabbath keeping in the works of Samuele Bacchiocchi and Marva J. Dawn, respectively. Bacchiocchi is from the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church which believes that the seventh day of the week is to be kept as the Sabbath. On the other hand, Marva Dawn is a Lutheran who believes in the relevance and benefits of keeping one day in a week as the Sabbath. Using a qualitative content analysis of books and articles by these two Theologians the doctrinal concept of Sabbath keeping is extensively studied in their respective works to find the distinctive theological contributions to Sabbath keeping that each author offers. In addition, other theologians including those who have written on Sabbath keeping are cited as secondary sources to maximize the critical theological discourse and outcome of this study. The intention of this process is to facilitate a critical engagement on Sabbath keeping in the works of Bacchiocchi and Dawn to gain a new, more complex, and nuanced understandings of Sabbath keeping. The study is then concluded by summarising the findings of the research, how the theology of Sabbath keeping can be enriched, developed, nuanced, and problematized through this critical theological engagement between the works of Samuele Bacchiocchi and Marva J. Dawn, and suggesting areas for future research.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis is ʼn studie van die leerstellinge oor Sabbats onderhoud in die werke van Samuele Bacchiocchi en Marva J. Dawn onderskeidelik.
