The Relationship Between Substance Use, Suicidality, and Access to Care Among Women Veterans: A Secondary Analysis of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration National Survey on Drug Use and Health

    No full text
Women military Veterans represent a growing population with unique healthcare needs. Women Veterans are at risk for adverse mental health outcomes, including the development of substance use disorders, and are also at risk for suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts. Further, women Veterans may face gender-specific barriers to mental health care. Utilizing data from the 2015-2019 and 2021 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Survey on Drug Use and Health, this dissertation examines rates of substance use, specifically opioid, cannabis, and stimulants, and explores the relationship between substance use, suicidality, and access to substance use and mental health treatment among women Veterans. The first paper within this dissertation describes rates of opioid, cannabis, and stimulant use and use disorders among women Veterans, while drawing comparisons between women non-Veterans and men Veterans. The second paper within this dissertation examines the association between suicidality, including suicidal ideation, attempts, or plans, and substance use. This paper also examines whether the relationship between suicidality and substance use is moderated by access to substance use treatment. The third paper within this dissertation explores barriers to accessing substance use disorder treatment among women Veterans and explores how these barriers might differ compared to women non-Veterans and men Veterans. The key findings of this dissertation include that women Veterans are more likely to use cannabis than both women non-Veterans and men Veterans, but less likely to develop a cannabis use disorder. Women Veterans were also more likely to be prescribed opioids and to use non-prescribed prescription opioids but were not at increased risk for the development of an opioid use disorder. Non-prescribed prescription opioid use increased the odds of suicidal ideation among women Veterans, while lifetime cannabis use increased the odds of suicide plans among women Veterans. Women Veterans were more likely to report stigma-related barriers to accessing mental health treatment compared to both women non-Veterans and men Veterans. These dissertation findings contribute to what is known about substance use, suicidality, and access to care among women Veterans, and will help to inform the development of future interventions geared towards improving care for women Veterans

PK/PD modelling of comb-shaped PEGylated salmon calcitonin conjugates of differing molecular weights

    No full text
Salmon calcitonin (sCT) was conjugated via cysteine-1 to novel comb-shaped end-functionalised (poly(PEG) methyl ether methacrylate) (sCT-P) polymers, to yield conjugates of total molecular weights (MW) inclusive of sCT: 6.5, 9.5, 23 and 40 kDa. The conjugates were characterised by HPLC and their in vitro and in vivo bioactivity was measured by cAMP assay on human T47D cells and following intravenous (i.v.) injection to rats, respectively. Stability against endopeptidases, rat serum and liver homogenates was assessed. There were linear and exponential relationships between conjugate MW with potency and efficacy respectively, however the largest MW conjugate still retained 70% of Emax and an EC50 of 3.7 nM. In vivo, while free sCT and the conjugates reduced serum [calcium] to a maximum of 15–30% over 240 min, the half-life (T1/2) was increased and the area under the curve (AUC) was extended in proportion to conjugate MW. Likewise, the polymer conferred protection on sCT against attack by trypsin, chymotrypsin, elastase, rat serum and liver homogenates, with the best protection afforded by sCT-P (40 kDa). Mathematical modelling accurately predicted the MW relationships to in vitro efficacy, potency, in vivo PK and enzymatic stability. With a significant increase in T1/2 for sCT, the 40 kDa MW comb-shaped PEG conjugate of sCT may have potential as a long-acting injectable formulation

Fatigue Behavior of 3D-Printed Nylon and ASA for Aerospace Applications

    No full text
Additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, has revolutionized the production of lightweight, customized, and cost-effective components across various industries. This study specifically investigates the fatigue behavior of two thermoplastics—Nylon and ASA—fabricated using the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technique. These materials have demonstrated significant potential in aerospace applications, particularly for lightweight structural components in mini drones and satellites, where corrosion resistance and high performance are critical requirements. Specimens were manufactured using the state-of-the-art Bambu Lab X1 Carbon printer, and the influence of key printing parameters—such as infill density, layer height, and test frequency—was systematically analyzed under cyclic loading. Among the infill patterns investigated, the Gyroid pattern exhibited superior fatigue performance due to its isotropic mechanical properties and optimized strength-to-weight ratio. Additionally, the study revealed that higher infill densities contributed to increased fatigue life, while variations in testing frequencies provided insights into material behavior under dynamic loading conditions. These results were consistent with the behavior observed in conventionally manufactured injection-molded specimens, affirming the viability of 3D-printed components in demanding aerospace environments

Palaeogeographic mapping of the basal Epsilon Formation, southern Cooper Basin, South Australia: what are the controls determining the organic enrichment of the uppermost part of the Murteree Shale?

Title page, abstract and table of contents only. The complete thesis in print form is available from the University of Adelaide Library. To support the voracious worldwide demand for energy resources into the future, a significant focus by energy companies is likely to be on the exploration and development of unconventional resources. One such unconventional resource that has started to attract more attention in recent times is the extraction of 'shale gas' - natural gas that is trapped within fine-grained sedimentary lithologies. Of particular interest is the Munkarie gas field, located in the southern Cooper Basin, South Australia. Within this field, the Munkarie-2 and Munkarie-4 wells contain a relatively high Total Organic Carbon (TOC) concentration from the top of the Murteree Shale. This project was charged with determining what were the controlling factors regarding the organic richness in the uppermost part of the Murteree Shale. Ironically, it is the overlying Epsilon Formation that may possibly determine what may be the cause of the 'sweet spot' for the Murteree Shale. Core logging was performed at Munkarie-2 and Toolachee-17 to gain a better understanding of the core. This confirmed that part of the Munkarie-2 cored interval was a barrier island complex that existed in a microtidal lacustrine environment - the Murteree Lake. Using Schlumberger Petrel, both 20 and 30 models were created from a total of 420 wells within the study area. The large quantity of data helped construct an assortment of geocellular models, subsea depth maps, isopach and sandstone percentage maps, culminating in the construction of a palaeogeography map. The palaeogeography map is a palinspastic restoration for the basal segment of the Epsilon Formation, exposing the depositional environments and reconstructing the fluvio-deltaic processes that were operative at the time. As deltaic progradation occurred, it is hypothesised that fluvial run-off from nearby floodplains created prosperous conditions for bacteria and algal organisms. Thus, a semi-enclosed lagoon caused by the existence of the barrier islands may have become anoxic due to the prolific multiplication of the organisms. Nourished by a nutrient supply from nearby fluvial systems, a proliferation of algae may have led to a dramatic increase in organic carbon on the lake floor. This study is proposing that the presence of barrier island complexes, situated in the basal part of the Epsilon Formation, could be connected to a localised organic TOC enrichment zone that has been recognised in the upper Murteree Shale (just below the lithostratigraphic boundary of the Epsilon Formation).Thesis (M.Sc.(Petrol.Geosc.) -- University of Adelaide, Australian School of Petoleum, 2014

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of Silicon Nanoparticles

    No full text
Despite the widespread use of hydrofluoric acid (HF) in the preparation of silicon surfaces, the true nature of fluorinated surface species remains unclear. Here, an array of characterization techniques led by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is employed to uncover the nature of fluorinated moieties on the surface of hydride-terminated silicon nanoparticles. A structural model that explains the observed trends in 19F and 29Si magnetic shielding is proposed and further supported by quantum chemical computations. Fluorine is incorporated into local oxidation domains on the surface and clustered at the interface of the oxide and surrounding hydride-terminated surface. Silicon sites capped by a single fluorine are also identified by their distinct 19F and 29Si chemical shifts, providing insight into how fluorine termination influences the electronic structure. Finally, challenges associated with Teflon® contamination are highlighted that future explorations of nanomaterials may have to contend with

College students and cyberbullying: how social media use affects social anxiety and social comparison

    No full text
Cyberbullying is defined as aggression intending to inflict harm on others by electronic communication technologies. Cyberbullying has become more common as social media has grown and is accompanied by negative mental health consequences. Research on cyberbullying and mental health in adolescents suggests cyberbullying victimization moderates the relationship between social comparison and social anxiety, but little is known about this phenomenon in college students. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the relationship between cyberbullying, social anxiety, and social comparison amongst college students. A convenience sample of 486 undergraduate students from southern Texas and northern Ohio completed a PyschData survey that assessed social anxiety, social comparison, experiences with be a cyberbullying victim, perpetrator, or both. We found that social anxiety was associated with cyberbullying victimization and perpetration; however, social comparison was not. Cyberbullying victimization was not a moderator between social comparison and anxiety, suggesting that unlike adolescence, college students\u27 experiences with these constructs may be unique to their developmental level

Targeting polymerised liposome vaccine carriers to intestinal M cells

    No full text
Due to their transcytotic capability, intestinal M cells may represent an efficient potential route for oral vaccine delivery. We previously demonstrated that the lectin Ulex europaeus agglutinin 1 (UEA1, specific for α-l-fucose residues) selectively binds to mouse Peyer\u27s patch M cells and targets 0.5 μm polystyrene microparticles to these cells. Using a gut loop model we now demonstrate that covalently-membrane-bound UEA1 similarly targets polymerised liposomes (Orasomes™, approximately 200 nm diameter), potential biocompatable oral vaccine delivery vehicles, to mouse M cells. Targeting was inhibited by α-l-fucose while the co-entrapped adjuvant, monophosphoryl Lipid A (MPL\uae), failed to exert any detrimental effect on UEA1-mediated M cell targeting. Lectin-mediated M cell targeting may thus permit the efficacy of mucosal vaccines to be enhanced if cellular relationship between particle binding and immune outcome can be established. \ua9 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Digital Survey Assessment of Factors Associated with Musculoskeletal Complaints Among US Ophthalmologists

    No full text
PURPOSE: To quantify features of musculoskeletal (MSK) complaints among US ophthalmologists and analyze factors related to symptom severity. METHODS: Cornea, glaucoma, retina, and comprehensive practitioners were invited to complete a web-based survey via email. Data on demographics, practice and procedural volumes, wellness activities, job stress, MSK health, the Total Disability Index (TDI), and ergonomics were collected. Significance testing was performed to evaluate factors related to TDI score. RESULTS: Of the 245 ophthalmologists contacted, 58.8% (n = 144) responded at least in part to the survey. Pain episodes were reported in 81.4% (n = 83) of 102 respondents, with 48.1% (n = 49) experiencing daily or weekly attacks. The neck, low back, and shoulders were commonly affected, yet only 57.1% (n=20) of those with shoulder pain reported a corresponding diagnosis. The mean TDI score was 6.2 ± 7.3%, indicating minimal disability related to the spine. Demographics, volume metrics, and wellness hours were each not significantly associated with TDI score (p \u3e 0.05). Higher job stress ratings were reported by those who experienced more frequent pain attacks (p = 0.02) and those with higher TDI scores (p = 0.001). Greater difficulty with clinic, laser, and surgery job tasks was observed in respondents with higher TDI scores (p \u3c 0.001, p = 0.005, and p \u3c 0.001) and more bodily pain locations (p = 0.002, p = 0.002, and p = 0.001). Respondents who pursued practice modifications (p = 0.03) and treatments (p = 0.01) to reduce or prevent pain had higher mean TDI scores, and 94.2% of respondents (n = 97) were interested in learning more about ergonomics. CONCLUSION: Mild MSK complaints were highly prevalent among the surveyed ophthalmologists, and a similar trend could be expected for other US ophthalmologists. Greater frequency and severity of pain may contribute to physician burnout. There may be underdiagnosis of MSK pathology yet also high demand for ergonomic strategies and MSK treatments, suggesting a need for practical solutions
