    May was born at sea about 1859 to William Henry Groves and Sarah (nee Matthews); the birth was registered at Picton, New South Wales. In May 1877, May was a widow living at Sandy Creek in the Northern Territory where she met and married Publican of the Diggers Arms Hotel, Leonard Searles. Almost two years after the marriage Leonard and May split due to an infidelity by May; Leonard eventually left the Territory. In the 1891 Territory census May is listed as May Morris and she was living with a Harry Morris at Mt Todd, where daughter Zena Myrtle was born. In 1895 when May was 36, she was one of the 82 women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. Her occupation was listed as "married woman" and she registered at the Katherine polling place. In November 1899 May was going by the name May Searles and married Territory mine manager William Marstin, a widower 23 years older than May. At Pine Creek in 1907 May's daughter Zennie married Ernest Castle. In July 1913 William Marstin died in the Territory. May died on 3 April 1915 at the Adelaide Hospital in South Australia.HousekeeperPionee
