Agent-based decentralised coordination for sensor networks using the max-sum algorithm

    No full text
In this paper, we consider the generic problem of how a network of physically distributed, computationally constrained devices can make coordinated decisions to maximise the effectiveness of the whole sensor network. In particular, we propose a new agent-based representation of the problem, based on the factor graph, and use state-of-the-art DCOP heuristics (i.e., DSA and the max-sum algorithm) to generate sub-optimal solutions. In more detail, we formally model a specific real-world problem where energy-harvesting sensors are deployed within an urban environment to detect vehicle movements. The sensors coordinate their sense/sleep schedules, maintaining energy neutral operation while maximising vehicle detection probability. We theoretically analyse the performance of the sensor network for various coordination strategies and show that by appropriately coordinating their schedules the sensors can achieve significantly improved system-wide performance, detecting up to 50% of the events that a randomly coordinated network fails to detect. Finally, we deploy our coordination approach in a realistic simulation of our wide area surveillance problem, comparing its performance to a number of benchmarking coordination strategies. In this setting, our approach achieves up to a 57% reduction in the number of missed vehicles (compared to an uncoordinated network). This performance is close to that achieved by a benchmark centralised algorithm (simulated annealing) and to a continuously powered network (which is an unreachable upper bound for any coordination approach)

    Schuldrechtsmodernisierungsgesetz 2002

Das „Gesetz zur Modernisierung des Schuldrechts“ ist am 1. Januar 2002 in Kraft getreten.

A study on gay and lesbian intergenerational relationships: a test of the solidarity model

Although a growing literature exists on gay and lesbian couples and their children, little research has been conducted investigating the social support systems of this emerging new type of family unit. Social support is known to be very important to individual, couple, and family functioning. It can be argued that social support is particularly important for gay and lesbian parents due to societal stigma for their lifestyles and disapproval of their choices to become parents. This quantitative study of 245 self-identified gay, lesbian, and heterosexual participants examined the relationships of gay and lesbian parents with family and friends and compared them to those of gay and lesbian nonparents, as well as to those of the heterosexual parents and nonparents. This analysis was done in order to assess support systems among different type of couples. The results showed that parents (regardless of sexual orientation) seemed to live closer to their own parents and received and provided more help to family members. The findings that gay and lesbian parents were so similar to heterosexual parents on these variables lend support to a hypothesis of the study that parenthood can bring gays and lesbians closer to their own parents. Nonparents (regardless of sexual orientation) seemed to receive and provide more help to friends than the parents groups, and lesbian nonparent couples tended to have the strongest connections with friends. The issue of gender played a probable role in these results, with women having stronger connections than men with their friends in each of these measures. Finally, interesting results emerged about gay parents. The gay male parents seemed to have stronger connections with family than the other gay and lesbian couples. It could be that gay men seeking parenthood may be a unique group with already strong family ties and desires for parenthood. Overall, this study's findings have practice implications and also provide direction for future research regarding parenthood, sexual orientation, and the importance of social support.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 247-263)

Integrating Bird Strike Risk Information into the Airport Management System

The calibration of Angular Accelerometers requires a controlled test with a known accel- eration pro_le. However, current turn-tables have been designed primarily for generating a constant rotational velocity. To generate a pro_le with varying angular acceleration we propose using constant rotational velocity on the two axes of a 2-axes motion simulator. The proposed sequence was developed to obtain the required rotational acceleration signal quality using only rotational velocity input. The identi_ed pattern is applied to an enve- lope of test conditions, resulting in test matrix. This method provides an alternative means to generate inputs that can be used to calibrate angular accelerometers using calibration hardware that is not primarily designed to provide accurate acceleration inputs.Control & Simulatio

Using Accelerometry to Detect Upper-Extremity Motor Deficits and Delays in Early Childhood

    No full text
Abstract Date Presented 3/30/2017 Identifying subtle motor delays in early childhood is challenging. Accelerometry is a novel way to characterize upper-extremity motor patterns in typically developing children. Differences were identified between typically developing children and children with hemiparesis ages 0–5 yr.
