The max-plus Martin boundary
No full textWe develop an idempotent version of probabilistic potential theory. The goal is to describe the set of max-plus harmonic functions, which give the stationary solutions of deterministic optimal control problems with additive reward. The analogue of the Martin compactification is seen to be a generalisation of the compactification of metric spaces using (generalised) Busemann functions. We define an analogue of the minimal Martin boundary and show that it can be identified with the set of limits of ``almost-geodesics'', and also the set of (normalised) harmonic functions that are extremal in the max-plus sense. Our main result is a max-plus analogue of the Martin representation theorem, which represents harmonic functions by measures supported on the minimal Martin boundary

No full textLetters from Martin in Johannesburg to his parents in Stettin and some return letters from Max Eisenstein to his son and daughter-in-law, 1936-1938. Also included are various documents from Germany and South Africa.Letter #12 gives graphic details of underground work in a gold mine in 1937 as a white sampler (not a black laborer).The correspondence is also available in an English translation by Martin and Ursel’s daughter, Eva Fels Eisenstein.Container List1/1: Letters from Martin; 1936-19381/2: Letters from Max; 19361/3: Berlin; 1931-19321/4: South Africa; 1936Digital: Correspondence in English translationIn 1936, Martin Eisenstein, age 26, from Stettin, Germany and his girlfriend, Ursula (Ursel) Fels, age 23, from Berlin escaped Nazi Germany to Johannesburg, South Africa, where they married and ultimately had three children. Martin's parents, Max and Herta, were eventually successful in also leaving Stettin for South Africa. Ursula’s father (divorced from her mother) had already left in 1933 for the United States with his son Klaus. Her mother Eva was murdered in Auschwitz at age 50 in 1942.Martin started as an unpaid partner in a small carpentry business (for which he had prepared in Stettin by becoming a carpenter), but eventually worked in gold mines for the mining company JCI (Johannesburg Consolidated Investment),moving up from mine sampler to an executive position at head office. - Ursel worked as a window dresser (decorator), having had commercial art training in Berlin and Stettin
