Maurizio Luisetti : in memoriam
On October 20, 2014, Maurizio Luisetti MD, Professor of Respiratory Diseases, University of Pavia, Italy,
passed away at his home in Pavia. He was 61 years old. We are all shocked and saddened by the
unexpected and untimely death of Maurizio, a good friend, a great researcher and an excellent doctor.
He was a very young researcher when, in 1985, he was appointed Head of the Biochemical and Genetic
Laboratory University of Pavia. He was among the founding members of Alpha One International
Registry, a member of the Coordinating Committee from 1997 to 1999 and a member of the Council from
2000. In 2010, Maurizio was appointed Head of the Respiratory Diseases Unit of Fondazione IRCCS
Policlinico San Matteo Pavia and Professor of Respiratory Diseases, University of Pavia
Society and the city. The dark sides of social innovation
Is there a connection between the increasingly widespread concept of social innovation and the success of today’s model of capitalist regulation? According to most studies focusing on social innovation, this is essentially a restorative relation: social innovation intervenes to fix negative effects brought about by the neoliberal regime. This volume is based on a different claim, namely that social innovation is a dispositif inscribed within neoliberal governmentality, and effectively supports cognitive capitalism’s new forms of production. In light of this claim, the transition from one mode of production to another generates a series of contradictions in social relations that changes the space in which they are inevitably inscribed. In this way, social innovation practices provide an ideal field of research to observe modes of production of subjectivity, along with the spatial practices of subjects involved in and affected by social innovation
In vitro assessment of the biologic activity of interferon beta formulations used for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis
A new formulation (NF) of subcutaneous (sc) interferon (IFN) β-1a was developed in an attempt to improve injection tolerability and immunogenicity. We compared antiviral and IFNβ-stimulated gene (ISG) activities of IFNβ-1a sc NF with IFNβ-1a sc original formulation and IFNβ-1b sc. When equivalent unit amounts were compared, the IFNβ formulations demonstrated similar antiviral activity and induced similar levels of ISG mRNA. However, on a weight basis (ng/mL), significantly more IFNβ-1b sc was needed to equal the antiviral activity of either IFNβ-1a sc formulation, and both IFNβ-1a sc formulations induced significantly higher levels of ISG mRNA than IFNβ-1b sc. © 2014 Carolina Scagnolari, Carla Selvaggi, Emilia Di Biase, Maurizio Fraulo, Fernando Dangond, and Guido Antonelli
