    George MacLeod’s open-air preaching: performance and counter-performance

    No full text
Stuart Blythe uses the methodology of performance to analyse George MacLeod’s open-air preaching. He points out that MacLeod’s preaching was derived from a theology of the incarnation, and an understanding of the paradoxes and dichotomies of common human life. This preaching, Blythe suggests, was also a counter-performance in the context of outlooks and ideologies inimical to the gospel. The paper raises interesting issues related to preaching as performance, and the further question as to whether or not the life and work of the Church as a whole might now be better understood as a counter-performance.Publisher PD

Modern diagnostic methods enable clinicians to look beyond a diagnosis of chronic Q fever and discern whether patients instead have persistent focalized Coxiella burnetii infection(s). Use of these methods and development of criteria to define and treat such infections, especially cardiovascular infections, will improve the prognosis for patients previously thought to have chronic Q fever

A genetic variation map for chicken with 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms

    No full text
We describe a genetic variation map for the chicken genome containing 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). This map is based on a comparison of the sequences of three domestic chicken breeds (a broiler, a layer and a Chinese silkie) with that of their wild ancestor, red jungle fowl. Subsequent experiments indicate that at least 90% of the variant sites are true SNPs, and at least 70% are common SNPs that segregate in many domestic breeds. Mean nucleotide diversity is about five SNPs per kilobase for almost every possible comparison between red jungle fowl and domestic lines, between two different domestic lines, and within domestic lines--in contrast to the notion that domestic animals are highly inbred relative to their wild ancestors. In fact, most of the SNPs originated before domestication, and there is little evidence of selective sweeps for adaptive alleles on length scales greater than 100 kilobases

Characterization by molecular approach of gut dysbiosis associated to severe acute malnutrition in Mali

The development of new therapeutic strategies is essential, especially as this persistence is associated with dysbiosis. The aim of this work was to characterise the gut microbiota by molecular approach in children under 5 years of age. Thus we conducted a case control study with 143 severely malnourished and 110 healthy control children in Kalaban-coro, Bamako, Mali. After approval from the local ethics committee and obtaining signed informed consent from the participants, socio-demographic and anthropometric data were filled in before collecting stool samples. For malnourished children, one stool sample was collected before the start of treatment and another at discharge. For healthy children, samples were collected at inclusion and 15 days later. Physicochemical parameters, targeted quantitative PCR, 16S metagenomics and short chain fatty acid measurement by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were performed for a broad exploration of the infant microbiota. We confirmed the depletion of anaerobic bacteria such as Bifidobacterium spp, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and the collapse of butyrate. We showed the loss of Methanobrevibacter smithii which was not detected from 24 months onwards, whereas it was present in 90% of healthy children at this age. Our results suggest that these bacteria constitute an entity to be explored in order to propose new therapies with probiotics to improve the management of severe acute malnutrition

Reading acts of narrative appropriation: four instances of fraudulent memoir

    No full text
PhDThis thesis examines acts of narrative appropriation, the telling of purportedly‘authentic’ life stories by those for whom the stories are not theirs to tell. This misuse or subversion of genre - the discipline of historical writing and the category of autobiography - becomes a means for cultural, social and political dissimulation, and the analysis focuses both on the act: the event, trespass, or ‘theft’ of another’s life story, and on the cultural meaning that this event reveals. These narrative acts are approached theoretically through discussions of what it means to be an author, a reader, and through the consideration of literary and social genre, category and form. In exploring identities at particular risk of appropriation, this thesis shows how fraudulent appropriated narratives affect our reading of the world, and in turn influence our perception of already marginalized social groups. My primary examples include prostitution ‘narratives’, Native North American ‘memoir,’ and fraudulent Holocaust survivor ‘testimony,’ with each text providing decoded evidence of ‘genre-bending’ exhibiting a social and political intent. These works seek to be read as authentic personal narratives, as autobiography, and that is how they have been presented to the reader. However, they are imposters – fictional tales desiring the elevated status of historical authenticity and willing to bend the rules and contracts of genre to achieve their end. Here the appearance of authenticity is achieved through the use of cultural and social ‘myth,’ or perceptions of cultural identity, and as such its fraudulent construction is first and foremost a social act, with a social and economic motivation. As this thesis concludes, these texts are most successful when their own political and social ideologies echo and confirm that of the readership; when their subjects, the fraudulent ‘I’ at the center of the text is also a performative elaboration of cultural belief

Genetic analysis of over 1 million people identifies 535 new loci associated with blood pressure traits

High blood pressure is a highly heritable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We report the largest genetic association study of blood pressure traits (systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure) to date in over 1 million people of European ancestry. We identify 535 novel blood pressure loci that not only offer new biological insights into blood pressure regulation but also highlight shared genetic architecture between blood pressure and lifestyle exposures. Our findings identify new biological pathways for blood pressure regulation with potential for improved cardiovascular disease prevention in the future. © 2018, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature America, Inc

Compelled to control: conflicting visions of the future of cyberspace

    No full text
This report looks at the desire among states for greater control over the digital domain. It considers the convergence of controlling desires among the major cyberpowers and examines some of the main dynamics of the Russian and Chinese positions. Their positions are examined relative to each other and to the Western consensus. The paper analyses the potential implications for the global internet and the impact that developing countries may have on the dialogue
