Object drop in L3 acquisition
The topic of cross-linguistic differences regarding the overt or null expression of arguments has been considered both in first (L1) and second language (L2) acquisition. There is abundant literature on both subject and object drop with different language pairings but the issue has not been considered in third language (L3) acquisition. The main goal of this article is to analyse the L3 interlanguage of Basque-Spanish bilinguals regarding the acceptability and interpretation of null objects. The three languages involved in the study display different semantic requirements for the target structure, with Basque allowing for a null object option across-the-board, Spanish only under certain semantic conditions, and English disallowing it in the standard variety. Two trilingual, one bilingual and a control group (n = 119) rated experimental items embedded in context, presented in a written and aural format on a computer screen. Findings point to the successful acquisition of the target structure, as well as a clear influence of Spanish in the three experimental groups
Transcriptomics on small samples
Interrogating the cell-specific transcriptome forms an important component of understanding the role that specific cells play in assisting a plant to overcome abiotic stress. Among the challenges arising when extracting RNA from individual plant cells are: the isolation of pure cell populations; the small yield of material when isolating specific cell types, and ensuring an accurate representation of the transcriptome from each cell type after amplification of RNA. Here we describe two approaches for isolating RNA from specific cell types—single cell sampling and analysis (SiCSA) and laser capture microdissection. Isolated RNA can then be directly sampled qualitatively using reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) or amplified for profiling ¬multiple specific genes using quantitative RT-PCR and genome-wide transcript analyses.Stuart J. Social democracy in a postcolonial island state : Dom Mintoff’s impact
This paper pays homage to former Maltese premier and postcolonial Maltese leader, Dom Mintoff soon after his death in August 20 2012. The pragmatic socialist politics of Dom Mintoff is exposed and the contradictions revealed. His ability as a negotiator, orator and architect of a democratic socialist politics marked by the building of a welfare state is underscored. Pugilistic and irascible, Mintoff is presented warts and all as a statesman and a political figure of international acclaim.peer-reviewe
Bootstrap Confidence Intervals and Coverage Probabilities of Regression Parameter Estimates Using Trimmed Elemental Estimation
Mayo and Gray introduced the leverage residual-weighted elemental (LRWE) classification of regression estimators and a new method of estimation called trimmed elemental estimation (TEE), showing the efficiency and robustness of TEE point estimates. Using bootstrap methods, properties of various trimmed elemental estimator interval estimates to allow for inference are examined and estimates with ordinary least squares (OLS) and least sum of absolute values (LAV) are compared. Confidence intervals and coverage probabilities for the estimators using a variety of error distributions, sample sizes, and number of parameters are examined. To reduce computational intensity, randomly selecting elemental subsets to calculate the parameter estimates were investigated. For the distributions considered, randomly selecting 50% of the elemental regressions led to highly accurate estimates

The soteriology of James in light of earlier Jewish Wisdom literature and the Gospel of Matthew
The epistle of James has been neglected in NT studies, caught between its
relationship with Paul and the claim that it has no theology. Even as it experiences a
resurgence of study, surprisingly no full-length survey exists on James as the epistle of
“faith and works.” Approaches to James have neglected its soteriology and, in
consequence, its theological themes have been separated or studied only in connection
with Paul. As “moral character,” however, “faith” and “works” fit within a coherent
theology of God’s mercy and judgment.
This study provides a sustained reading of James as a Jewish-Christian document.
Because James presents the “faith” and “works” discussion in context of “can such faith
save?” (2:14), the issue becomes one of soteriology and final judgment. Both the “law of
freedom” and the “word of truth” demand faithful obedience—the “works.” Moreover,
God’s character and deeds in election form the basis for human “works” of mercy and
humble obedience, while future judgment is in accordance with virtuous character.
It has been established that James shares methodology and concerns with prior
wisdom literature. This thesis therefore examines key ideas developing across the Jewish
literature and Jesus’ teaching as presented by Matthew, and highlights developing views of
God saving and judging his people. Within the first two chapters, James gives a high view
of God’s work in calling and redeeming, providing wisdom to his people, and instilling the
long-anticipated new covenant that they might live in obedience, humility and purity in
accordance with his character and will. Because of God’s saving work, he justly judges
those who fail to live mercifully, while his mercy triumphs for those who obey. God
begins the work and sustains those who ask; but only those who submit to the “perfect
law of freedom,” whose faith works, receive mercy when God enacts his final justice

Emulation is the most sincere form of flattery : retro videogames, rom distribution and copyright
The Internet has made it possible for amateur game creators to collaborate on projects irrespective of geographical location. The success of projects such as Minecraft, and even CounterStrike, demonstrates that ‘indie’ developers can create entertainment products just as popular and successful as mainstream developers with huge budgets. However, many individuals instead are more interested in the old than the new – reliving past experiences through the playing of old videogames that are no longer commercially sold. Through the creation of emulators, and the ripping of ROM images (data that allows for the playing of an emulated videogame, such as Super Mario Bros. on the Super Nintendo), games with nostalgic value can be easily distributed, played and replayed. In addition, this allows for the preservation of legacy content that may otherwise be consigned to the ‘dustbin of history’. However, irrespective of the effort and ingenuity that goes into the creation of emulation software, and the effort involved in ripping ROM data to make old games playable, are these pursuits entirely legal? The purpose of this paper is to consider the compatibility of such projects with pre-existing norms of intellectual property law, comparing and contrasting the approaches of US and EU IP regimes in their handling of emulators and ROMS. The paper will analyse the issue under pre-existing legislation and with regard to relevant case law, seeking to draw conclusions on whether the existing regimes in copyright law are compatible and satisfactorily balance the right of videogame publishers to seek fair remuneration for their work with the desire by enthusiasts to preserve and relive a form of creative culture
"In and against the state" : Gramsci, war of position, and adult education
This paper focuses on the way a state-funded university, as an important institution of civil society, consolidates existing hegemonic arrangements and, at the same time, offers spaces wherein these arrangements can be contested. Using ethnographic data culled from structured and semi-structured interviews as well as other appropriate documentation, the author highlights some of the challenges and contradictions of a
university-based workers' education institute advocating for social change "in and against the state." The key concept from Gramsci that reverberates throughout the essay is that of "war of position."peer-reviewe
