    Choices and Consequences: The Role of Players in The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game Series

    One of the most important features in a transmedia structure, as Max Giovagnoli argues in his book Transmedia: Storytelling e Comunicazione [Transmedia: Storytelling and Communication], is the development of the user’s decision-making power, defined by the author as “choice excitement.” In this, every choice of the user should have a consequence in the fictional universe of a specific franchise. Consequently, a narrative universe that wants to emphasize choice excitement and the active role of people can focus on video games, where the interactive approach is prominent. This essay will discuss a specific video game, based on the famous franchise of The Walking Dead. This brand, which appears in comic books, novels, TV series, Web episodes and video games, is analysable not only as an exemplary case of transmedia storytelling, where every ramification of the franchise published in different media is both autonomous and synergistic with the others, but also by focusing on the choice excitement of users in the first season of the video game The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game Series

    Fragmentation: between expansion packs and episodic video games

    The contemporary video game market is more and more crowded with titles that are expanded by digital contents that can be downloaded for free or payment: from annexing additional costumes to the characters, to implementing large portions of narrative, today expansion packs represent a phenomenon potentially and concretely capable of redefining the lifespan of each video game initially sold as a standalone creation, to then prove to be partial when new contents are released. This essay will try to group the variety of these digital contents into two essential sets, and then it will try to understand if the video games expanded by future downloadable contents can be included among the canons of serial gaming, now explicitly represented by the advent of episodic video games

    Questa tesi ha l’obiettivo di individuare, dagli anni Settanta fino ai giorni nostri, alcuni aspetti impliciti ed espliciti della serialità narrativa all’interno dell’industria videoludica, e nello specifico all’interno dei videogiochi destinati alle piattaforme di gioco casalinghe. Sebbene i videogiochi suddivisi in episodi e rilasciati a intervalli variabili di tempo sui mercati digitali rappresentino un fenomeno relativamente recente, alcuni esponenti fin dagli anni Settanta hanno evidenziato la presenza implicita di alcuni aspetti formali della serialità narrativa consolidati su altri settori d’intrattenimento. Tali aspetti, grazie alla costante evoluzione ludica e narrativa del medium, si sono sempre più esplicitati fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri, in cui alcune compagnie sviluppatrici hanno ottenuto successo grazie allo sviluppo e alla distribuzione serializzata. Questo percorso storico, parallelamente, evidenzia una progressiva complessità delle trame presenti in vari videogiochi, dove le narrazioni si articolano sulla base delle scelte degli utenti. Tali scelte, spesso corrispondenti a momenti di grande intensità drammatica e importanza per lo sviluppo del racconto, chiamano spesso in causa i giocatori da un punto di vista morale grazie a sofisticate strategie di design. La presenza costante di videogiochi esplicitamente e implicitamente seriali sul mercato che cercano di incutere riflessioni di rilievo durante la fruizione sottoscrive un concetto sempre più disforico legato all’intrattenimento videoludico, che sarà mio obiettivo inquadrare nel corso della tesi.Italian

    L'escola secundària superior a Itàlia des de 1945 cap aquí: Aspectes socials, polítics i educatius. L'autor descabdella un discurs sobre l'evolució de l'escola secundària italiana, mirant d'esbrinar quines han estat i són els obstacles, les rèmores socials i polítiques que n'han caracteritzat el desenvolupament. Es remet a la Llei Casati del 1859, sense la qual no s'entendrien certes "obstinades permanències", que només s'expliquen en el context històric de la Itàlia unitària. L'exploració històrica de l'evolució de l'ensenyament secundari italià a través del període feixista i republicà fins als nostres dies el duu a establir que l'escola secundària ha d'assegurar una formació general que permeti el jove d'inserir-se després amb profit en el món del treball. L'escola -també l'escola secundària superior- no ha d'oferir una professionalització específica, perquè en ella mateixa és un lloc de potenciació de la intelligència i de la disponibilitat humana de produir cultura. La reforma del secundari superior s'ha de basar, a judici de Genovesi, en el criteri d e la unificació en estreta interacció amb el de l'opcionalitat,i des d'aquesta perspectiva la professionalització esdevé l'objectiu principal de la formació de l'individu, una professionalització entesa no tant com la capacitat d'exercir exclusivament treballs parcellats i ocasionals com l'exercici racional i competent d'un ofici o professió amb totes les potencialitats ètiques i cognoscitives que implica l'exercici professional.Higher secondary school in Italy from 1945 up to now. Social, political and educational aspects. Professor Genovesi analyzes the evolution of the Italian secondary school system, indicating which have been and are the obstacles and the social and political hindrances having affected it, from the old Casati Law of 1859 on. The historical exploration of the changes in the Italian secondary education throught the fascist and republican period up to the present days brings the author to the conclusion that higher (secondary) education has to ensure a general formation or training allowing young people's professional insertion to society in a profitable way. Higher secondary school-and school in general- has not to offer an specific,narrow, professionalization, because it is by itself an space for improving the human intelligence and the availability to produce culture. Higher (secondary) education reform has to be based, according Genovesi, on the ideas of unification and optionality,and from this outlook the professionalization becomes the chief aim of human formation, a professionalization conceived as the availability to exerce or practise in a rational and competent way a profession with all the ethic and cognoscitive potentialities of the professional practice

    Social capital and Growth in Brazilian Municipalities

    According to the modern theory of social capital (see Coleman (1990), Putnam (1993), Fukuyama (1995)), widespread trust would influence the economic performances of a country through a) reduction of transactional costs (monitoring and preventive activities to protect themselves from being exploited in economic transactions) and legal disputes; b) higher percentage of time devoted to innovation in new products or processes; c) higher reliability of formal institutions like the government and the central bank which implies that people can adopt more appropriate horizons in making investment decisions and choose production technologies that are optimal over the long, rather than short, run; d) a stronger social cohesion due to the sharing of ethical norms which induces cooperative behaviours and organisational innovations. On the basis of these theories a large number of empirical contributions which confirm the existence of a positive relation between growth, efficiency and the level of trust has been produced. Following the seminal work by Knack et al. (ibidem), we try to explain growth in Brazil over the period 2000-2003 using indicators of social capital. We develop our analysis at the most detailed geographical level, considering all 5507 municipalities. This choice is motivated by the great heterogeneity inside every country in terms of growth rate. While we observe homogeneity in some countries, like Sergipe, in other countries, like Sao Paulo, we have huge differences. This forces us to consider the municipalities as unit of observation; otherwise the country level would force us to loose all the heterogeneity. In order to obtain good measures of social capital, we start from a set of objective measure, and then analyse then with factor component analysis. We find a robust evidence of the positive effect of social capital on growth rates of income per capita.DYNREG15

    Un'analisi del videogioco "Democracy 4" (Positech Games, 2022), simulatore di gestione di governi democratici, come strumento di alfabetizzazione alle procedure democratiche. In particolare, la costante possibilità di fallimento diventa per il giocatore un’ulteriore spinta al ragionamento e alla partecipazione, rendendolo consapevole e responsabile delle proprie azioni, favorendo il “riversamento” di queste condizioni al di fuori del mondo di gioco. È nella proposta di questi aspetti che "Democracy 4" si manifesta come strumento ideale al contrasto dell’apatia politica e alla formazione di cittadini civicamente informati e responsabili, non solo un “gioco”, ma un potente strumento educativo che va ben oltre i suoi meriti ludici

    Ramón de Salas, professor at the University of Salamanca, was the author of the manuscript "Notes To Genovesi", which actually was a large rejoinder to the famous Genovesi's Lezioni di Commerzo (1765-1767). The manuscriptpt, conceived during the second half of the 1780´s decade, displays a rough criticism of Lezioni's economic ideas, which was the main topic tackled by Genovesi's work, but at the same time, however, a wide number of legal and political critical comments are clearly identified. This work analyses the ideas on Natural Law used by Salas to anwser Genovesi back and the close proximity among the rationalist, individualists and utilitarian approaches and Sala's one, what it was not very usual in the Spanish Enlightenment. Therefore, the crucial role played by certain treatises on Political Economy to spread more than strictly economical ideas out is demonstrated.En la segunda mitad de la década de los años ochenta del siglo XVIII, el profesor de la Universidad de Salamanca Ramón de Salas escribió una extensa réplica de las famosas Lezioni di commercio (1765-1767) del napolitano A. Genovesi, que tituló "Apuntaciones al Genovesi" y dejó manuscrita en su tiempo. En sintonía con el contenido central de las Lezioni, Salas realizaba un análisis muy severo de sus ideas económicas de esta obra; sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, también se extendía en numerosas anotaciones críticas de naturaleza jurídico-política. En este trabajo se repasan las ideas de raíz iusnaturalista que Salas utilizó en su réplica a Genovesi. Se remarca la afinidad del profesor español con una visión jurídica racionalista, individualista y utilitarista, no muy habitual en la Ilustración española. Todo ello viene a confirmar la importancia que tuvieron en ésta determinados tratados de Economía Política como vía para la difusión de ideas comprendidas más allá de su matriz disciplinar original
