Il salario del peccato: Seven di David Fincher (1995)
This article aims to analyze the film Seven (1995) directed by David Fincher, because Seven is one of the few films that explicitly thematizes the seven deadly sins in the contemporary world. Firstly, the author discusses the cinematic genre to which the film belongs, along with the associated difficulties and significance. Then, she explores the numerous and previously neglected thematic and stylistic aspects that Fincher has drawn a film of one of the most celebrated directors in film history. Then, she considers the contemporary painter whose works inspired Fincher in the staging of the crimes. La nuova Guida alla storia romana
This article aims at discussing and evaluating Guida alla storia romana, the new edition of a book written by Guido Clemente and published for the first time forty years ago. In particular, the author tries to examine the ways Clemente managed to assure such a longevity to his treatment of Roman history, and the role played by his broad interpretation
py2DIC. A New Free and Open Source Software for Displacement and Strain Measurements in the Field of Experimental Mechanics
Thanks to the advances in computer power, memory storage and the availability of low-cost and high resolution digital cameras, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is currently one of the most used optical and non-contact techniques for measuring material deformations. A free and open source 2D DIC software, named py2DIC, was developed at the Geodesy and Geomatics Division of the Sapienza University of Rome. Implemented in Python, the software is based on the template matching method and computes the 2D displacements and strains of samples subjected to mechanical loading. In this work, the potentialities of py2DIC were evaluated by processing two different sets of experimental data and comparing the results with other three well known DIC software packages Ncorr, Vic-2D and DICe. Moreover, an accuracy assessment was performed comparing the results with the values independently measured by a strain gauge fixed on one of the samples. The results demonstrate the possibility of successfully characterizing the deformation mechanism of the investigated materials, highlighting the pros and cons of each software package
«Saggezza attraverso sofferenza» nell’antico regime: The King’s Whore (Axel Corti, 1990)
This article aims at suggesting an interpretation of the movie The King’s Whore (Axel Corti, 1990). In particular, the author examines the story which the director and especially the screenwriter Frederic Raphael have exploited for the settling of the plot. In the final section of the movie, the events take a sad and compelling turn and they diverge both from the real history in the Duchy of Savoy and from the novel Jeanne de Luynes, comtesse de Verue (Jacques Tournier, 1984). The author tries to show the purpose of the change and the significance of Greek tragedies for the adaptation and re-shaping of this literary text in a film
Cinema storico ed eternità di Roma
This article aims to discuss the academic renewed interest on films set in a cinematic interpretation of the past. Separating fiction from truth should not be the first real purpose for ancient historians; furthermore scholars ought to commit to these studies without any disdain or patronizing superiority. Then, the author tries to examine the function played by the image of Rome in these movies, and the broad range of meanings shared by the representations of the city. Finally, the author analyses the evolutions in conceptualizing the eternity of Rome and the deep changes noticeable in many films from this point of view through the ages
Strutture narrative e mito nel cinema storico sul mondo antico
This article aims at understanding the great public acclaim for films set in a cinematic interpretation of the classical past, despite the low consideration critics had for this movies. The author investigates the origins of these films and traces back their genesis in historical fiction in literature and in academic painting with classical subjects.
Finally, the author discusses how decisive has been – and still is – the use of myths for the construction of a successful story set in the past
