Implementing and Assessing Library Reference Training Programs

    No full text
Comprehensive assessments have shown that academic library users prefer a welcoming environment that provides the opportunity for self-sufficiency. Libraries need to meet these expectations and improve the quality of library reference by creating a comprehensive training program for librarians, staff, and students. This article will review standards for reference training in academic libraries with a focus on one-desk service points and consider best practices for planning, implementing, and assessing training programs for staff, students, and librarians. © 2014 Copyright Lily Todorinova and Matt Torrence

Informed Desk Staffing with Quantified Reference Statistics: Using Electronic Data Collection to Re-Envision Reference Services at the USF Tampa Libraries

    No full text
Andy Huse, Barbara Lewis, Lily Todorinova, and Matt Torrence participated in a panel presentation for RUSA MARS Hot Topics. Their presentation titled Informed Desk Staffing Through Quantified Reference Statistics” discussed the data collection, data analysis, and decision-making aspects of the Re-envisioning Reference project at the USF Libraries. This project examined the implementation and effectiveness of online data collection tools and the use of their data to inform managerial decisions as to scheduling of desk hours and staffing levels. Interviews with key library administrators were conducted in order to provide an historical perspective as to weaknesses of past data collection and to identify administrative needs for reliable data to support staffing and scheduling decisions. The presentation reported on the initial findings of desk usage utilizing the online data collection tool and the impact of scheduling and staffing changes based upon that data

Student-Focused Learning Programs: Designing and Delivering

    No full text
Librarians typically have limited time during one-shot library instruction sessions, so supplementing instruction with asynchronous reusable learning objects (videos, tutorials, Prezi presentations, LibGuides, etc) allows them to maximize their time with students in all environments. Embedded librarian, Susan Ariew, will illustrate the reusable learning objects she uses in course management systems to prepare students for classes to get them beyond the basics and prime them for meaningful librarian/student instructional sessions. From in-studio production to laptop simplicity, we\u27ve tried it all in terms of video instruction. Engineering & Business Librarian Matt Torrence will talk about the production side of things, illustrating user-friendly technologies such as Xtranormal, JING, and Quicktime screen and audio capture software that have become an integrated part of our instruction efforts inside the library, as well as beyond our walls. In addition, new staffing for production and development has made it possible to plan other class- and assignment-specific tutorials and virtual lessons. Attendees will become aware of simple, inexpensive technologies that they can use to enhance library instruction both in traditional and non-traditional learning situations. By using learning objects, attendees can see instruction can be more of a process and not a one-time event, a process that can begin online before the students come to the library or have contact with the librarian and can end well beyond the instructional session. Attendees will identify how small instructional pieces can be used individually or grouped into an endless number of combinations of modules, providing a way to construct a customized set of instruction for each course, assignment, or student

Targeting and selecting journals for article submissions: Library resources and impact measures

    No full text
This workshop will provide an overview of journal metrics and rankings in all academic fields, including traditional impact measures from sources including the Web of Science (Impact Factor) and Scopus (CiteScore) databases. Additionally, general information will be offered regarding other additional academic impact databases and methods to maximize benefit of any information on journal, author, and subject area data points. Other impact measures will be presented, including Altmetrics tools. Presenters will introduce other topics on relevant author profile and archiving options for immediate and future use, including ORCiD and examples based on the USF Libraries’ Digital Commons repository

Services and Resources to Engineers: A Case Study of Outreach and Marketing, Assessment, and Future Directions in a Research Library

    No full text
The literature, activities, and resource needs of engineering students and faculty provide insight into a demographic that is often among the early-adopters of new technologies, tools, and methods of sharing information. Despite the often non-bibliographic nature of their research efforts, there are numerous elements of the traditional service model that remain relevant and integral to the engineering research patron base. New methods of in-person and virtual instruction, the improved promotion of research consultation, and data management are prime targets for efficient and effective service updates. This article outlines the current engineering research environment, using a large research institution as a model and case study for evaluation and future planning for outreach and service marketing

Making Decisions: Using Electronic Data Collection to Re-Envision Reference Services at the USF Tampa Libraries

Declining reference statistics, diminishing human resources, and the desire to be more proactive and embedded in academic departments, prompted the University of South Florida Library to create a taskforce for re-envisioning reference services. The taskforce was charged with examining the staffing patterns at the desk and developing recommendations to give librarians greater flexibility and to better respond to the information-seeking needs of users. These recommendations were based on statistics of desk usage, collected with the newly adapted online tool Desk Tracker, and structured interviews with library administrators. The taskforce was interested in how these stakeholders use quantitative data in decision-making.Peer reviewe

Birth of a University, Part 02 of 02

In 1962, filmmakers documented the origins of the young university. Special Collections obtained the film and narrative script, but did not have a soundtrack. Working with the script and footage, librarian Matt Torrence provided a 1960s-era booster voice, while librarian Andy Huse matched the voice-over with the footage. Thus, Birth of a University was reborn 45 years after its creation

Chip-Firing Revisited: A Peek into the Third Dimension

    No full text
Chip-firing was first introduced as a probabilistic game. Subsequently, it was generalized to arbitrary graph configurations and investigated mostly with regard to two-dimensional quad-grid layouts. In this paper, we lift chip-firing to the third dimension. Aside from the arising three-dimensional shapes, we are interested in the internal, two-dimensional structures. Furthermore, we explore the different shapes obtained by chip firing processes on various neighborhoods, such as the face-centered and the cube-centered grid as well as on a neighborhood inspired by knight moves.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Computer Graphics and Visualisatio
