M.G. Ciani discusses the presence at a "subliminal level" of ancient Greek and Latin literature in the novels of Virginia Woolf. The author argues that classical texts, and in particular ancient myths, provide Woolf with an imaginary room of her own where the writer (just like one of her characters, Jacob, in the novel Jacob's Room) finds a protective space, hidden away from the anxiety and the horrors of the Second World War

Are also given some innovative activities related to catch to give the rural tourism a more attractive over time and determine the character of rural activity to strong sustainability

    Genetic Influences on Male Homosexuality

    No full text
Sexual orientation, identity and desire is the final product of complex interactions between factors such as genetic influences, epigenetic, developmental pathways, both prenatal such as sex hormones, including the maternal factors acting on the foetus, and postnatal factors including shared environmental influences such as family education, social and cultural influences, and nonshared environmental influence such as unique personal experiences. Male homosexuality poses an evolutionary dilemma as it entails reduced fitness but is nevertheless, in part, influenced by genetic factors. Examining the causes of homosexuality the author investigates the Darwinian dilemma as to why genetic factors that influence homosexual nonreproductive behaviour can be maintained in the population without disappearing as expected. Sexually antagonistic selection can explain male homosexuality. A sexually antagonistic model with genetic factors partially linked to X chromosome by increasing fecundity in females and influencing homosexuality in males could be selectively balanced in the population and explain all the peculiarity of male homosexuality

Microbial Polysaccharides Extracted from Different Mature Muds of the Euganean Thermal District Show Similar Anti-Inflammatory Activity In Vivo

The Euganean Thermal District, situated in North-East Italy, is one of Europe's largest and oldest thermal centres. The topical application of its therapeutic thermal muds is recognised by the Italian Health System as a beneficial treatment for patients suffering from arthro-rheumatic diseases. Polysaccharides produced by the mud microbiota have been recently identified as anti-inflammatory bioactive molecules. In this paper we analysed the efficacy of Microbial-Polysaccharides (M-PS) derived from mature muds obtained at different maturation temperatures, both within and outside the codified traditional mud maturation range. M-PSs were extracted from six mature muds produced by five spas of the Euganean Thermal District and investigated for their chemical properties, monosaccharide composition and in vivo anti-inflammatory potential, using the zebrafish model organism. Additionally, mature muds were characterized for their microbiota composition using Next-Generation Sequencing. The results showed that all M-PSs exhibit similar anti-inflammatory potential, referable to their comparable chemical composition. This consistency was observed despite changes in cyanobacteria populations, suggesting a possible role of the entire microbial community in shaping the properties of these biomolecules. These findings highlight the importance of scientific research in untangling the origins of the therapeutic efficacy of Euganean Thermal muds in the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions

Evaluating the Diversifying Market for and Viability of Rural Tourism Activity in Japan

    No full text
This paper evaluated diversified rural tourism activities from the perspectives of economic viability and endogenous utilization of rural resources and investigated labour productivity. First, we presented a conceptual framework on how to evaluate economic viability and the endogenous mobilization of rural resources. Second, we empirically evaluated economic viability, the supply shift effect of endogenous utilization of rural resources and labour productivity with regard to rural tourism. The main findings are as follows. First, examination of the three main activities, i.e. accommodation, restaurant operation and direct selling of farm products, showed that both full-time and part-time labour input contribute more effectively to better sales than such labour for farm experience services, which means that these activities are viable whereas other activities that provide farming experience services did not yet clearly show evidence of a viable farm business. Second, we could not confirm the supply shift effect of endogenous innovative use of rural resources. Overall, it was evaluated that rural tourism in this country is undersupplied at a social optimal level. In the long run, institutional conditions for market formation and management skills for endogenous innovation in utilization of rural resources should be more intensely developed as a part of rural resource management policy.rural tourism, rural resources, farm diversification, Community/Rural/Urban Development,

Exploring Metal Interactions with Released Polysaccharides from Cyanothece sp. CE4: A Chemical and Spectroscopic Study on Biosorption Mechanism

    No full text
This study investigates the potential of released polysaccharides (RPS) from the halophilic cyanobacterium Cyanothece sp. CE4 as biosorbents for heavy metals, specifically copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn). By combining ICP-OES, SEM-EDX, FT-IR spectroscopy, and XAS techniques, this work provides a comprehensive chemical and spectroscopic analysis of the biosorption mechanisms driving metal removal. The results revealed a strong binding affinity for Cu, followed by Ni and Zn, with RPS functional groups playing a key role in metal coordination. The RPS efficiently removed metals from both monometallic and multimetallic solutions, emphasizing their adaptability in competitive environments. XAS analysis highlighted unique metal-specific coordination patterns. Ni preferentially binds to oxygen donors and Zn to chlorine, and Cu exhibits non-selective binding. Remarkably, the extracted RPS achieved a maximum Cu removal capacity of 67 mg per gram of RPS dry weight, surpassing previously reported biosorption capacities. This study not only advances the understanding of biosorption mechanisms by cyanobacterial RPS but also emphasizes their dual role in environmental remediation and circular resource management. The insights provided here establish a foundation for the development of sustainable, cyanobacteria-based solutions for heavy-metal recovery and environmental sustainability

Promoting Smart communities and Tourism in The Rural Areas . The Role of the Broad and ICT

    No full text
In this new era of the Green Economy, the development of rural areas is closely linked to the paradigm of the Sustainable Development Strategy and the option of multifunctionality of rural enterprises. Multifunctionality is the key word of the new millennium. In this sense, tourist activities in rural areas (as Agriturism or Rural Tourism) plays a leading role in the process of development especially for the innovations reflected in the significant positive cash. In the century of communication even in rural areas a basic dissemination and widespread use of ICT become more and more important; in particular therefore the dissemination and use of the Broad Band especially in rural areas is crucial. The big push that are giving to the Smart Cities programs for urban areas must strengthen that of the Smart Communities for rural areas. Through a strong network and a technology program structured in rural areas, is possible to imagine building of interactive services for local marketing especially for advertising in order to promote a loyalty tourists (on the basis of an approach customer). The authors believe that a popular and innovative service of tourism in rural areas can’t be regardless of the expansion of ICT and Broad Band. In this paper, after a deep introduction about the objective of rural development and sustainability towards Horizon 2020, the author make several consideration regarding the importance of ICT and technology for the rural areas
