Abstract: It is widely recognised that in Japan the depiction of historical figures has
been a recurring theme in both oral and written narratives, as well as various theatrical
productions. One historical figure that has been a particularly rich source of inspiration
is the daimyō Tokugawa Mitsukuni, whose stories have been told across different genres
and disseminated through various forms of media. The chronicles of Tokugawa Mitsukuni’s
journeys throughout Japan to dispense justice by punishing villains can be traced back
to the late 18th century, when they first emerged in kōdan oral storytelling performances.
Among the diverse artistic interpretations, this essay focuses specifically on the unique
aspects of TV adaptations. It begins with the examination of Mito Kōmon, a television
series broadcasted from 1969 to 2011 for six months each year. It then moves on to discuss
the new adaptations of 2017 and 2019, which brought the venerable character back to
the screen with altered narrative settings. These adaptations provide an intriguing lens
through which to explore the evolving portrayal of Tokugawa Mitsukuni and his enduring
impact on popular culture
Modern Japanese spelling conventions include the use of diacritical marks called dakuten and handakuten used to mark voiced consonants and the presence of the bilabial voiceless occlusive /p/ respectively
In this paper I will describe the historical process that led to the formation of this diacritical mark system as it is used today, summarising the evolution and stabilisation of Japanese orthography
Lo scrittore abita qui. Shiba Ryōtarō, i libri e l’architetto
Ichikawa Kon’s Tokyo Olympiad is the official documentary of the 1964 Summer Olympics. Even before its release, the film received strong criticism by the Japan Olympic Committee and the National Diet. In their eyes, the film failed to be a pure record of the Games, to highlight the success of Japanese athletes, and to portray Japan in a positive fashion. Tokyo Olympiad indeed subverted genre conventions by denying the extraordinary nature of the spectacle of the Olympics, while at the same time trying to recover the original meaning of the Olympics. Through a poetic representation of reality, Ichikawa thus questioned the very idea of the “official record”, exposing those cultural politics which are inherent in a documentary on the Olympic Games commissioned by their organizers
In this paper, after a brief introduction of Towazugatari (A tale no one asked for, 1306), I focus on a particular scene of this work describing, an unusual kemari game played by a group of young ladies in waiting of the abdicated Emperor GoFukakusa (1243–1304). This scene very skillfully provides a picture of the world of politics in the Kamakura period (1185–1333), when using sex and gender to achieve political goals was a widely acknowledged social standard. Starting from the description of the kemari game, I analyze the role of ladies in waiting, the sexual culture at court, and the personal experience of Lady Nijō, whose sexuality was an exchange commodity among the men and even used as a gift. Her memoir, written in retrospect when she became a nun, presents the dramatic story of a woman whose life took a particular direction because of the dominant roles in the patriarcal society, where she was expected to obey the will of her father and his surrogate, GoFukakusa
In this contribution, I examine a prose writing by the Futurist poet Hirato Renkichi (1893/4–1922), titled “Sport” jidai (The age of “sports”, 1922). My interpretation of this text focuses on the trope of the intérieur, which I borrow from the writings of Walter Benjamin, who discussed the intérieur as a central element for conceiving domestic space in the 19th century, and touched on the ways in which it was «liquidated» in the 20th century. I trace the instantiations of the intérieur and its liquidation in Hirato’s text, interpreting it in connection with F. T. Marinetti’s Manifesto of Futurism (1909). I argue that, by mobilizing the trope of “sports”, Hirato articulated an original reflection on the liquidation of the intérieur
Analisi testuale e storico-culturale
The paper centres on the poetic works of Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) and explores the theme of wine. By examining a selection of compositions that feature wine as a subject or involve characters like sake 酒 or yoi 酔, the author seeks to challenge the prevailing notion that Michizane was unable to consume alcohol or had limited appreciation for gatherings involving alcoholic beverages. The paper's aim is to offer fresh perspectives on the contrast between public and private poetry during the early Heian period in Japan. This includes revaluating the notion of a strict division between hare and ke
paru o faru?
Starting with Hashimoto’s work in 1928 and continuing until recent times, the prevailing belief was that the reflex of the phoneme /*p/ of Proto-Japanese was a bilabial fricative [ɸ] as early as the Nara period. This perspective had widespread acceptance. In this paper, I intend to outline the key studies on this topic, particularly those that have critiqued Hashimoto’s hypothesis. Special emphasis will be given to Wenck’s theory from 1959, which, despite receiving limited recognition within Japanese scholarship, has significantly contributed to the fields of Japanese philology and phonological research. Moreover, to support the theory suggesting [p] as the most archaic phonetic value, I will provide a detailed account of the reflexes of /*p/ and the underlying diachronic changes in the contemporary language varieties found in the Ryūkyū Islands. Ultimately, this paper will conclude by identifying the phonetic values of the discussed phoneme in Old and Late Middle Japanese, both at the word initial and word medial positions, based on the most viable and phonologically plausible theories available
