Le statut de l'Un dans la «Métaphysique»

Contrary to the traditional interpretation which holds Being and the One to be convertible, the author maintains that this convertibility is only upheld by Aristotle in extreme cases such as the individual being and the supreme genera. In all other cases the relations between Being and the One are controlled by complementarity, the One ensuring the modes of unity for Being. This status of the One also explains the difference between «principles» and «beings», showing that the question of principles belongs to Henology. Couloubaritsis Lambros. Both the geographical and man-made space greatly affects a person's life. In the context of this work, we will investigate the perspective of the Philippian writer Lambros Enyalis on his birthplace, Philippopolis, through his literary work as a means of information about its geographical, historical, cultural, social and economic elements in the 19th century. Specifically, in the first chapter a brief reference will be made to theories of space in literature. The second chapter will present some information about the life and the work of the author, the third chapter will present information about the city's geographical location and its history over time. In the next chapter we will see how this is illustrated through the author's work and the paper concludes with the conclusions and an appendix with supporting material for what is mentioned.54 σ

Particulate composite material internal deformation measurements using x-ray microtomography and digital volume correlation

    No full text
Typical particulate composites used in engineering applications consist of complex microstructures with a range of particulate sizes and often high particulate volume fractions (65%-95%). Examples of these are, explosives and rocket propellants for defense and aerospace applications, asphalt concrete materials civil engineering applications and ceramic/ceramic thermal barrier coatings for turbine engines. In the past, X-ray microtomography (X-ray microCT) has been used to study the internal structure of such complex microstructures. The combination of the Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) method and the three-dimensional (3D) imaging X-ray microCT technique is becoming a powerful tool in the mechanics community that provides 3D internal metrology in addition to 3D imaging. In this work, we employ an in-house DVC algorithm to measure deformations within a model composite material – a controlled number of one or a small finite number hard particles in a complaint polymer matrix. In-situ compression experiments are performed inside an X-ray microCT scanner on samples containing different microstructure configurations. To quantitatively and qualitatively study the internal deformations and evolution of failure in 3D, we use a model composite material (cylindrical 15 mm in height and 10 mm in diameter) with a series of different well-controlled microstructure configurations. A simple microstructure arrangement consisted of precisely positioned spherical ceramic inclusion(s) (at most two). A more complex microstructure contained a larger number (20) of randomly positioned spherical alumina inclusions. The final configuration studied contained a precisely positioned irregularly shaped inclusion. The model material consisted of a reinforced polymer matrix, PDMS with 35 µm glass marker particles which were appropriately distributed to serve as the internal speckle pattern required for DVC. Specifically, we studied the 3D displacement and strain fields resulting within the polymer particulate composites with different microstructure arrangements. In addition, we resolved the resolution and accuracy of the DVC analysis technique by successfully comparing the measured results to known elastic solutions (before the occurrence of failure). The second part of this work focused on studying internal flaws and failure evolution as a function of loading. Interfacial debonding was the only failure mode seen in these model composites and was studied quantitatively and qualitatively for the simpler microstructure configurations of a single embedded spherical inclusion or two inclusions one above each other. We also attempted to delay interfacial failure by increasing the surface roughness of a single alumina inclusion sample. Although, in the simpler case of the single and double inclusions the opening(s) was precisely measured, in the more complex interfacial failure patterns of the multiple spheres or the irregularly shaped inclusions, debonding was only qualitatively studied using volumetric 3D renderings.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2019-08-01The student, Manue Martinez, accepted the attached license on 2017-07-14 at 01:44.The student, Manue Martinez, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2017-07-14 at 02:07.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2017-07-19 at 10:38.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #11465 on 2018-03-02 at 13:02:13Made available in DSpace on 2018-03-02T19:59:41Z (GMT). Microscale strain accumulation during fatigue and fracture of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

    No full text
The goal of this thesis is to relate the different microstructural features in additively manufactured and conventionally manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloys to the observed fatigue and fracture behaviors. Additively manufactured Direct Metal Laser Melted (DMLM) Ti-6Al-4V samples with two different build orientations and build layer thicknesses were compared to conventionally manufactured annealed Ti-6Al-4V samples. Optical images of the microstructure were recorded after these samples had been heat tinted in a laboratory oven. Using a modified single edge notch tension geometry, the samples were fatigue precracked then subjected to monotonic loading, followed by unloading and reloading. The Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measured plastic strain from fatigue precracking (i.e. plastic wake) was compared to the optical microstructural images. While the plastic wake was observed to be relatively uniform and symmetric about the crack line in the conventional samples, the prior β grain boundaries were seen to influence the size and shape of the plastic wake in the additively manufactured samples. Unlike the relatively straight precrack in the conventional Ti-6Al-4V, the fatigue crack in the additively manufactured samples was observed to periodically propagate parallel to the α’ laths and deflect at prior β grain boundaries. The fatigue crack also propagated towards voids observed on the surface of additively manufactured samples. Voids and other defects observed within the additively manufactured alloy could be responsible for the premature failure of the samples in several experiments. Needle-like regions of high strain that correlated to the α’ laths were observed in the additively manufactured samples, suggesting significant influence of the microstructure on the plastic zone. In one experiment, cracks nucleated at these regions of localized strain after subsequent reloading in additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2021-12-01The student, Raeann VanSickle, accepted the attached license on 2019-08-08 at 15:29.The student, Raeann VanSickle, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-08-08 at 15:58.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-08-13 at 13:44.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14417 on 2020-02-28 at 17:19:55Made available in DSpace on 2020-03-02T22:10:19Z (GMT). Palabras clave: Història de Jacob Xalabín, mentalidades catalanes y aragonesas bajomedievales, Romania y La Sálona   Abstract: An adventure romance of a mostly oriental setting written in Catalan by an anonymous author of the Late Middle Ages. As it is clear from my research carried out on the primary sources, under the surface of the literary work in question unfolds the drama of the very last years of the so-called ‘county’ of Catalan-Byzantine Sola, that is, Salona, in the central Greece region of Phocis before the ottoman invasion (1394) Keywords: Història de Jacob Xalabín, late medieval Catalan and Aragonese mentalities, Romania and Salon

Thermo-mechanical response and plastic deformation behavior of Hastelloy X at elevated temperatures — role of dynamic strain aging

    No full text
In this work, the plastic behavior of Hastelloy X subjected to thermo-mechanical loading is investigated, and the phenomenon of dynamic strain aging is studied under isothermal and temperature jump experiments, using the technique of digital image correlation (DIC). The material of interest, a Ni-based superalloy, is widely used in high temperature applications, and it is important to understand its plastic response in such loading regimes. It is seen that Hastelloy X exhibits serrated or jerky flow behavior at higher temperatures, which manifests as oscillations on the uniaxial tension stress strain curve. This is a consequence of the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect, and is characterized by strain bands propagating through the length of the specimen, at specific time intervals, leading to a local increase in strain as the band propagates. Although the existence of a PLC effect in Hastelloy X has been observed before, the current work elucidates the effect of PLC bands on the deformation under uniaxial and biaxial states of stress, and under both isothermal and thermal cycling conditions. Variability in the response at different temperatures is studied locally, through the DIC measurements, and globally through far field measurements, with a relation between the two measurement scales being established. The DIC results, when correlated with the global load-displacement measurements, illustrate the contribution of the PLC effect to the plastic response of the specimen. A section of experimental work is devoted to characterization of the material behavior, and understanding the phenomenon of dynamic strain aging. A qualitative assessment of PLC band characteristics is also discussed. The effects of dynamic strain aging on the reduction of flow stress are investigated under both uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions. Cyclic thermal experiments under the influence of stress concentrations lead to certain counterintuitive phenomena such as greater strain accumulation at lower flow stresses.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2012-05-24T21:17:50Z Item was in collections: University of Illinois Theses & Dissertations (ID: 1) No. of bitstreams: 1 Swaminathan_Bharath.pdf: 26040071 bytes, checksum: 7750cdf28f694800919dea90c2d47aed (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2012-09-18T21:18:15Z (GMT). Life Cycle Emissions and Cost Study of Light Duty Vehicles

    No full text
AbstractThe growth of vehicle sales and use world-wide requires the consumption of significant quantities of energy and materials. Advanced propulsion systems and electric drive vehicles have substantially different characteristics and impacts. For a comprehensive comparison of advanced and traditional light duty vehicles, a model is developed that integrates external costs, including emissions and time losses, with societal and consumer life cycle costs. Life cycle emissions and time losses are converted into costs for seven urban light duty vehicles. The results, which are based on vehicle technology characteristics and transportation impacts on environment, facilitate vehicle comparisons and support policy making in transportation. More sustainable urban transportation can be achieved in the short term by promoting policies that increase vehicle occupancy. In the intermediate term, more sustainable urban transportation can be achieved by increasing the share of hybrid vehicles in traffic. In the long term, more sustainable urban transportation can be achieved with the widespread use of electric vehicles. A sensitivity analysis of life cost results revealed that vehicle costs change significantly for different geographical areas depending on vehicle taxation, and the pricing of gasoline, electric power and pollution. Current practices in carbon and air quality pricing favor oil and coal based technologies. However, increasing the cost of electricity from coal and other fossil fuels would increase the variable cost for electric vehicles, and would favor the variable cost of hybrid vehicles

Characterizing the tensile behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V using multiscale digital image correlation

    No full text
In this work, the tensile behavior of an additively manufactured (AM) alloy, titanium 6Al-4V, or Ti-6Al-4V (by wt. 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium), is examined on multiple length scales using two-dimensional (2-D) digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. Ti-6Al-4V is one of the AM metals that is currently commercially available for use in a variety of engineering applications. This work focuses on characterizing the relationship between the microstructure and bulk mechanical properties of the AM Ti-6Al-4V specimens and understanding how unique microstructural features pertaining to AM metals, such as columnar grain morphology and nonequilibrium phase structures, influence the micro-scale deformation behavior. A low magnification in-situ DIC study (referred to as the macro-scale study) was performed during tension experiments to assess the bulk properties of most specimens while the specimens were loaded, and a high magnification ex-situ DIC study (referred to as the micro-scale study) was performed on a single sample using a microscope after the sample was unloaded and removed from the load frame to observe the heterogeneous strain accumulation at this smaller scale. The experimentally-measured mechanical properties of AM Ti-6Al-4V were compared against conventionally processed Ti-6Al-4V. AM Ti-6Al-4V specimens exhibited greater strength than conventionally processed Ti-6Al-4V due to the acicular, or needle-like, grain structure. In the micro-scale study, alternating regions of high and low strains were observed to accumulate along these needles, or laths. The effects of build orientations (related to microstructure anisotropy), powder bed layering thicknesses (30 and 60 microns), and heat treatment, on the macro-scale properties were examined. A significant decrease in strength was observed in samples subjected to annealing heat treatment as compared to as-built specimens with no heat treatment. This behavior was due to the coarsening of the grain structure observed in scanning electron microscope images. AM Ti-6Al-4V tension specimens exhibited higher strength when the direction of applied tension was perpendicular to the AM build orientation. Upon further investigation in the microscale study, this observed anisotropy is thought to be related to interfaces of consecutively deposited layers as regions of high strain seen in the micro-scale study were observed to accumulate at changes in structure associated with the deposition of layers.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2019-08-01The student, David Foehring, accepted the attached license on 2017-07-12 at 13:25.The student, David Foehring, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2017-07-12 at 13:40.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2017-07-17 at 14:25.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #11427 on 2018-03-02 at 13:01:43Made available in DSpace on 2018-03-02T19:59:36Z (GMT). Also published in Consequences of Class and Colour: West Indian Perspective, ed. by David Lowenthal and Lambros Comitas. Garden City, NY: Anchor Press, 1973This paper seeks to describe the patterns of occupational preference in rural Jamaica. It draws upon two independent surveys for its data: 1) a study of elementary education by P.C.C. Evans in 1957, and 2) a survey of conditions affecting rural labour supply by the author in 1955. Occupational choice was investigated in both studies, and by collating their data on this topic, the correspondence of career choice amongst peasant adults and children is explored, and these aspirations related to local prospect

Self-healing of impact damage in vascular fiber-reinforced composites

    No full text
Vascular fiber-reinforced composites mimic biological systems to allow pluripotent multifunctional behavior in synthetic engineering materials. In this dissertation, methods are explored for recovering mechanical performance of a composite material after an out-of-plane impact event using vascular self-healing technologies. To date, the critical damage modes which occur during out-of-plane impact that most significantly contribute to reductions in post-impact performance have not been identified and methods for delivering healing agents to those critical regions using internal vascular networks has not been explored. In this dissertation, out-of-plane impact damage is quantified and correlated with reductions in post-impact mechanical performance. Additionally, healing of impact-induced damage is demonstrated using vascular delivery of epoxy and amine based agents. An alternate healing agent chemistry for potential use in vascular healing schemes is also discussed. This work is the first to detail methods for healing impact-induced damage in vascular composites using segregated healing agent components and paves the way for the adoption of self-healing vascular materials in commercial applications.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2018-05-01The student, Kevin Hart, accepted the attached license on 2016-02-22 at 10:09.The student, Kevin Hart, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-02-22 at 10:19.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-02-23 at 16:45.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #9083 on 2016-07-07 at 13:48:29Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-07T20:26:55Z (GMT).
