    Alertness and visuospatial attention in clinical depression

    Abstract Background Cognitive deficits are a substantial burden in clinical depression. The present study considered dysfunction in the right-hemispheric attention network in depression, examining alertness and visuospatial attention. Methods Three computerized visuospatial attention tests and an alertness test were administered to 16 depressive patients and 16 matched healthy controls. Results Although no significant group effect was observed, alertness predicted reduced visuospatial performance in the left hemifield. Furthermore, sad mood showed a trend towards predicting left visual field omissions. Conclusions Decreased alertness may lead to lower left hemifield visuospatial attention; this mechanism may be responsible for a spatial bias to the right side in depression, even though treatment of depression and anxiety may reduce this cognitive deficit.</p

    Generierung und Validierung von künstlichen emotionalen Reizen zur Untersuchung affektiver Verarbeitung bei gesunden Probanden und Patienten mit Schizophrenie

    The purpose of the study was to show that artificial faces representing emotions, so called avatars, can be recognized as good as photographs of actors playing an emotion. Furthermore the ability of the avatars to demonstrate the emotion recognition deficit of patients suffering from schizophrenia should be proven. The avatars were created with Face Poser, a program that is part of the computer game Halflife² (Valve-Software, Bellevue, Washington, USA) and then validated by healthy subjects. The main-study following contained a task to discriminate the emotions happiness, anger, sadness, disgust, fear and neutral (6 alternatives forced choice). The avatars as well as pictures from the FEBA-Database (Facial Emotions for Brain Activation; Gur et al., 2002) were presented in 4 randomized blocks, each picture for 7 seconds at the longest. To match the heathy subjects with the patients group demographical information was collected. The comparison of the best recognized avatar and the best recognized photograph showed that in principle avatars are recognized as good as photographs. The following results were obtained by only taking into acoount the healthy subjects. Sadness (p<0,0001) and fear (p=0,0098) are better recognized when presented by an avatar, worse recognition rates were achieved by the emotion disgust (p<0,0001) and the neutral avatars (p<0,0001). On average patients suffering from schizophrenia perform worse than the healthy subjects (p=0,023). Interpreting the results for the avatars and the photoraphs individually the emotions sadness (p=0,0011) and fear (p=0,0048) were recognized significantly worse when presented by avatars, this applies for disgust (p=0,0031) shown by photographs. In general artificial emotions can be recognized and are able to show the emotion recognition deficit of schizophrenic patients
