Management of Mesiodens and ectopically Erupted Central Incisor

No full text
ABSTRACT Pediatric dentists come across children and developing malocclusion at the earliest, early recognition and interception could avoid long-term laborious orthodontic treatment. Mesiodens are the most common supernumerary teeth, in the central region of the premaxilla, between the two central incisors, which may be the cause for a variety of irregularities in the developing occlusion, in particular, can lead to the impaction or ectopic eruption of adjacent permanent teeth, in the most esthetically important zone. Presented here is a case of management of ectopically erupted right permanent central incisor caused due to supernumerary tooth. How to cite this article Nagaveni NB, Poornima P, Valsan A, Mathew MG. ABSTRACT Aim This study was carried out to determine the level of awareness about the importance of oral health in hemophilic children and their caretakers as well as to examine the oral condition in children with hemophilia and compare them to general population. Materials and methods A descriptive cross-sectional observational study was conducted in the city of Davangere. The study consists of total 100 children which were divided into group I —children having hemophilia (n = 50) and group II—normal healthy children (n = 50) of age 3 to 18 years. The oral cavity of both the groups was examined to assess to detect presence of any hard and soft tissue anomalies. By interviewing the parents of hemophilic patients, their demographic data, family history, and knowledge and understanding of value of oral health were assessed. Data were analyzed by chi-square and student’s unpaired t-test. Results No significant difference in the presence of oral anomalies in both the groups was observed. Conclusion The study concluded that there is no major difference in the prevalence of dental abnormalities in hemophilic and healthy children. Also, educating the mass about oral health and maintenance is as important as treating the hemophilic patient for oral diseases. No full text
Background: Numerous risk-of-bias tools are available to evaluate the quality of primary studies included in a systematic review (SR). Aim: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of such tools in SRs within the field of pediatric dentistry and to explore whether a threshold for methodological quality has been implemented when selecting primary studies for inclusion. Materials and methods: A comprehensive electronic search was conducted across seven pediatric dentistry journals to identify SRs published between 2012 and 2023. The use, type, and extent of quality assessment tools applied in the SR process, along with the presence of a methodological quality threshold set by the authors, were analyzed. Results: Among the 198 SRs that met the inclusion criteria, 37 quality appraisal and risk-of-bias tools were used either individually or in combination. In this sample, only one-tenth (21/198; 10.6%) of the SRs included a defined threshold for the quality of primary studies. When considering only SRs with meta-analyses (MA), this percentage increased slightly to 17.3%. Conclusion: SRs in pediatric dentistry employ a variety of quality assessment tools to evaluate primary studies; however, only one-tenth of them included a defined threshold for the quality of the studies. The scientific community should adopt stricter reporting standards to enhance the quality of SRs, thereby ensuring that their findings can be effectively translated into clinical practice

No full text
Bruxism is a disorder characterized by grinding and clenching of teeth which may be due to various etiological factors. Though various etiological factors have been associated, the exact cause is known. Stress has been positively associated with bruxism. The prevalence of bruxism is seen to be high in children and reduces with age. The lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 has been stressful for children and parents with the introduction of work from home for parents. This study was initiated to find if work from home is a stress factor for children with bruxism. An online survey link was shared to 156 parents of 6–8-year-old children who visited the department of pedodontics and preventive dentistry. 111 parents responded to the survey. 71.2% of the parents found their children to be stressed of which 30.4% believed online classes and the lack of parental interaction due to work from home caused stress. 71.2% of the parents believed that consultation was necessary despite of lockdown. Within the limits of the study it has been found that work from home can be considered as a stress factor for children with sleep bruxis
