Critical reflections of PGCE graduates on theory studied for their pedagogic practice and for contextual challenges
Abstract: The value of theory in the education of teachers is often being contested in the current 21st century skills discourse. The intention of this research project is to understand how the theory mediated to PGCE students influence their practice, how they apply pedagogical content knowledge to the realities of the classroom and to arrive at an understanding of how they experience their practice as novice teachers. The low quality of teaching and learning in schools has notably been a matter of concern and has brought the education and training of teachers to the fore. One of the issues is the kind of teacher education received by teachers. This research study critically explores PGCE graduates understanding, practice and reflections on theory studied during their PGCE course. Additionally, it looks at other experiences in their teacher education that PGCE teachers found productive and unproductive for their practice. The central question this study addresses is: how do PGCE graduates understand, practice, and reflect on the value of curriculum theory and other teacher education experiences for their practice?...M.Ed. The promotion of Setswana through hip hop and motswakolistas
Many South African music genres, such as bubblegum, kwaito and local Afro-pop, originate in Johannesburg and mainly use ‘Jozi Sotho’ or ‘Jozi Zulu’. These two varieties are used as lingua francas in greater Johannesburg and thus reasonably have more ethno-linguistic vitality than other Southern Bantu languages spoken in South Africa. The musical genre of motswako defied tradition and effectively set an unprecedented trend in South Africa, firstly by mainly using Setswana and English code-switches and -mixes, and secondly by developing in Mahikeng. The aim of this article is to highlight this new trend, using qualitative content analysis to examine the lyrics of five popular motswako songs. The analysis illustrates that besides English, motswako mainly uses Setswana (both standard and non-standard varieties). The author proposes that motswako and motswakolistas are part of the identity of Batswana, and thus the growth and popularity of the genre inevitably promotes Setswana’s status in society

Tax impediments to holding company structures in Belgium, Ireland and the United Kingdom : caution for South Africa

University of Pretoria. The South African government intends promoting South Africa as a gateway for investment into Africa. This will necessitate some important changes being made to South Africa's legal and tax framework. It is envisioned that the proposed investment in Africa and South Africa would take the form of holding companies incorporated in South Africa and holding interests in operating subsidiaries located in South Africa or the rest of Africa. This article refers specifically to the creation of tax regimes that are attractive the establishment of holding companies, and investigates how three countries - Belgium, Ireland and the UK - have struggled to put in place such systems. The article goes on to compare these jurisdictions with two others that have had greater success, viz the Netherlands and Mauritius. The article concludes by identifying some lessons that could be learned by South Africa from the respective experiences of the countries whose tax regimes are discussed in the article.http://www.jutalaw.co.za/catalogue/itemdisplay.jsp?item_id=3601http://upetd.up.ac.za/thesis/available/etd-05222010-170510
Fundamental fouling mechanisms of dissolved organic matter fractions and their implications on the surface modifications of ceramic nanofiltration membranes: insights from a laboratory scale application
This work reports on the fundamental factors influencing inter-foulant and foulant-membrane interactions during simulated dissolved organic matter removal using ceramic nanofiltration. Fouling tests were performed using sodium alginate (SAL), humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) as model foulants. Fouling potentials of each foulant and their mixtures were investigated using feed solutions containing fixed concentrations of K+, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ with a total ionic strength of 10 mM. The impact of modification by atomic layer deposition on fouling mitigation was also assessed. The flux decline in the first 100 min for single foulants was 4.16 × 10-2, 2.69 × 10-2 and 1.60 × 10-2 Lm-2 for SAL, HA and BSA, respectively. These results demonstrated that for the single foulants, deposition on the membrane surface in the early stages of filtration was primarily governed by membrane-foulant interactions. Interestingly, cake filtration was the least fouling mechanism in feed solutions composed of BSA and SAL (R2 = 0.519, 0.374 for BSA + SAL and BSA + SAL + HA, respectively) and the most favorable fouling mechanism of feed solution which included HA and SAL (R2 = 0.972). The water contact angle dropped from 58o to 35° after coating, thus improving its anti-fouling properties.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Sanitary Engineerin
South African travel writing and bias
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 92-96).This thesis spotlights the travel and leisure magazine industry within South Africa. It contends that the travel writing genre is susceptible to a number of biases, both past and present, which ultimately affect the way its overall content is produced and presented to the public. This work was substantiated through a set of qualitative interviews with key professionals within the South African travel and leisure magazine industry, as well as through a theme- based content analysis of a number of local travel writing publications. This study adds to a rather extensive line of research written on the topic of travel writing regarding a number of older criticisms of bias including 'othering', escapism, and gendering. However, it also focuses on a number of more modem biases such as direct advertising, advertorial usage, as well as the acceptance of 'freebies' and barter agreements, none of which has been given much attention in previous research. The sheer existence of these and other biases within the modem South African travel and leisure magazine industry exhibits an absolute necessity of examination into such a topic, especially given the importance and overall influence that the travel writing industry has on a country's economic standing and overall image
Aard van 'n hoofkwartiermaatskappy : die onderskeid tussen 'n hoofkwartiermaatskappy en soortgelyke entiteite werksaam in die internasionale sfeer
This article is an adapted version of part of the research done and submitted
by the author in part fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor
of Laws at the University of Pretoria.
