    A correlation study of ACCUPLACER math cut scores, developmental math modules, math prep, and academic preparedness in the shared nursing program at Nicolet Area Technical College

    Plan BThe purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between the current math ACCUPLACER cut score of 80% and the successful completion of the developmental math modules or math prep to academic preparedness in the shared practical nursing program at Nicolet Area Technical College. The study included three cohorts of nurses from June 2001 through June 2003. Seven questions were specifically addressed by the study. These questions were: 1) Of the number of students applying for the practical nursing program, how many achieve the 80% on the ACCUPLACER placement test?, 2) Is there a differential impact on student success on the first nursing math test based on developmental math modules, math prep, or an 80% on the first ACCUPLACER try?, 3) What is the relationship between students’ grades in math prep and their score on the first nursing math exam? 4) What is the relationship of students’ scores before taking the developmental math modules and their score on the first nursing math exam?, 5) What is the relationship of students ACCUPLACER cut score of 80% or better and the score on their first nursing math exam?, 6) What is the relationship of students’ scores before taking math prep or developmental math modules and their score on the first nursing math exam? and, 7) What is the number of practical nursing students that failed the practical nursing program based on inability to pass a nursing math exam on their third attempt

    For educators who are continually looking for up-to-date, real-world examples of how mathematics impacts daily life, Yummy Math is a welcome ally. In fact, every article on the site seeks to link math to what is "relevant to our world today." For instance, a recent article presented some of the math-related possibilities for the upcoming release of the new iPhone 6S and 6S plus, suggesting that students explore past iPhone launch sales data in order to predict sales for the new model using bar graphs and scatter plots.     Anyone who has taught or tutored math - or who has simply been a mathematics student themselves - will recognize that one of the biggest challenges to learning mathematics is the prevalence of math anxiety. Children and adults alike often believe that they are bad at math. Graham Fletcher is one of many educators who is working to change the way that math is taught and alleviate this anxiety. On his blog Questioning My Metacognition, Fletcher, an elementary school math educator with over 10 years of teaching experience, shares complete lesson plans, instructional videos, and resources. Fletcher emphasizes creative, hands on instructional activities that promote metacognition - the ability to recognize and reflect on one's own problem solving process. These kinds of activities are designed to combat the myth that one is "good" or "bad" at math and instead help students develop and recognize their critical thinking skills. Their website supports a National Science Foundation ATE grant-supported project designed to improve teaching in the areas of Mathematics, Science, and Technology at the high school and college levels. This improved learning results from using math, science, and technology principles to build and control various machines such as pointers and robots or "math machines", which are simple devices that provide an immediate, physical, dynamic expression to abstract mathematical equations.     Reading bedtime stories to children is a common strategy to boost kids' literacy--but what about doing the same for math? Parents hoping to prevent math anxiety in their children may find Bedtime Math to be a formidable ally. This resource offers more than two thousand short math puzzles designed as fun activities for parents to do with their kids at bedtime. New puzzles are added daily and each features "a cool fun fact, followed by math riddles at different levels so everyone can jump in." Parents can subscribe for free to get new daily Bedtime Math puzzles via email or they can download a free app (available for iOS and Android devices) where they can access the puzzles in both English and Spanish. Bedtime Math also offers the "Crazy 8s Math Club!" a kit of free resources designed to be used for fun after-school recreational math clubs. Bedtime Math was created by Laura Overdeck, a mom with degrees in astrophysics and public policy who loved playing with numbers as a child. Bedtime Math's activities have been used in studies by the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University, who both found their offerings to be beneficial

She is also an experienced math teacher who has worked in New York and New Jersey. In an effort to assist her fellow educators, she has created this delightful collection of math lessons.
